Title: Roneys of Whitehaven and elsewhere
Post by: carolgriff on Wednesday 06 December 06 15:19 GMT (UK)
Hi

I am still searching for where my Roneys came from Roneys and hope someone can help.

I know dad is Hugh Roney- preumably the one killed in William Pit disaster 1839.
Kids are
 Barney born circa 1820
Philip circa 1828 and
my Catherine circa 1830 in Queen street Whitehaven 1841.
I know they are siblings as i have all 3 marriage certs.

1851 census shows Catherine- now Lowther- has a sister Mary circa 1833 Cumberland.

Im thinking theres also a brother/relative Hugh Roney whose burial is listed on this board, no evidence though except he lived in same street as my lot were at 1841.
1841 Mar 21 Hugh Rooney of queen St, Whitehaven 35

I also suspect a sister Jane whos knocking about in Co Durham under her married name- no marriage record though.(maiden name on birth certs)

All ages are very vague as they vary from census to census.

If anyone can help me find out ideally who Hughs wife- kids mam was and where Hugh came from I would be thrilled.

me again

its just occured to me could the Hugh Roney who died 1841 be the dad of my Catherine Philip and Barney? Knowning how they guessed at ages not impossible?

Trouble is where is the death other than this site, could it be transcribed as Hugh Merney 1841

Carol - who is now totally in a turmoil:)

HELP!!!

Ive just been told no record of a Hugh Roney burial 1841 by Stockport GRO. Not even a Hugh Merney who I thought it might be when checking burials on ancestry.

Im gutted. They say its a rogue entry?

Is there any other way I can find if a record exists, and can I ask what JAC 374 means- this is a copy of an earlier response to someones Roney hunting. I really want to know who the informant was and what Hughs job was.

Im desperate, help please, he has to be one of mine living in Queen street

Carol

Have you not got Hugh's death cert? This will probably reveal wife's name.

I thought that also, but he died in the 1839 William pit disaster and the coroner was the informant so no clues theer.
Thanks anyway.

Have you not got the death cert for Hugh Roney 1st qtr Whitehaven 1839? This may show the address of Hugh and it may be the same as the one shown for Barneyetc on the 41 census.
I have a William Roney and Mary with their family in Workington on the 41 census they were from Ireland

Hi
Hugh Roney 1839 was at Banks Lane.
What intrigues me is that catherine Philip and Barney roney are all at Queen street 1841- later marriage certs show Hugh to be dad.
Could 1841 Hugh be a brother?

Who is the Hugh with wife Isabella and child Isabella baptised 1836 at Whitehaven?
The aunt Mary Ann Roney on the 51 census living with Philip born Whitehaven c1777 could this have been Hugh's sister or if sister  in law which Roney was she married to.Where were they on the 41 census?

what an idiot am I- dont answer!
Why have I never seen an aunt before?
Cos i never loooked at the census- i trusted the transcript, I believed they
had a 7 months old kid and not an old aunt- learn from my mistake folks:)
I could kiss you Dotty, Iwont sleep tonight:)

Today I finally received the certificate of Hugh Roney/Rooney/Merney etc etc.

You may recall that I was told that a 35 year old Hugh Roney had died  16th March 1841 Queen Street Whitehaven and I was intrigued as my Catherine Philip and Barney Roney were at Queen Street 1841 after losing their dad Hugh Roney 1839.

Full praise to Whitehaven register office who responded to my plea and found what looked to them like Hugh Mooney aged 35 Queen Street.

The cert came today Hugh MOONEY a mariner of 41 Queen Street aged 35. The informant is Elizabeth Lindow of Queen Street who was present at the death.

Looking at 1841 census I think maybe the address was 71 and not 41, I see a Jane Money living near Elizabeth Lindow.

I think this is perhaps a dead end, I know you should never rule anything out but Id be suprised to find a mariner amongst my lot and although Jane is a family name- I really dont think Money/Mooney is Rony/Rooney.

By the way if these are anyones rellies then I will gladly provide a copy.

Thanks to all who offered suggestions- knowing is better than not knowing I suppose:(
