I was wondering if Patrick Mcloughlin (Mclaughlin) living in no 5 Clunagh  Cleenagh) in the 1901 census was James brother  as some of the children's names are the same.
I cannot see him in the 1911 census any help appreciated

I was looking at the Griffiths Valuation and noticed a John Mcloughlin from Fallask.
I then looked  at the LDS site and came across a marriage for a John Mcloughlin  4/5/1867 father Michael who married Elizabeth Doherty Father Patrick.
I am wondering is there any connection on either records to my Mcloughlins

Hello Little Annie,

Was reading this thread on the Strall McLaughlins. As I am doing a lot of family research myself, I thought I would let you know that Bridget McLaughlin, Annie's sister was my great grandmother. I also met Roseanne a few times and was generally aware that Harkins (wee Paddy was often mentioned) were related to my grandmother Brigid Sheils. Just wondering if you have any additional info to share. Regards, Coileán

Don't know nothing about the Harkin's on Granny side of the house except that we had them on both sides if that makes any sense.
I remember going to your grannies house when i was a lot younger with my mother in the sixties & seventies .
Do you know how the Harkins & McLaughlin's were related ?
I was hoping you could enlighten me on things

McLoughlin   James   70   Male   Head of Family
McLoughlin   Sarah   56   Female   Wife
McLoughlin   Patrick   28   Male   Son
McLoughlin   Bridget   26   Female   Daughter
McLoughlin   Mary Ann   24   Female   Daughter
McLoughlin   Charles   20   Male   Son
McLoughlin   Sarah   17   Female   Daughter
McLoughlin   Thomas   16   Male   Son
McLoughlin   Catherine   13   Female   Daughter
McLoughlin   Annie   11   Female   Daughter
McLoughlin   James   4   Male   Grand Child

I am not really sure either how the Harkins are related unfortunately. All I know is that the Bridget McLaughlin (Clenagh)  from the 1901 Census above, daughter of James McLaughlin was married to Edward Doherty (Gortnaskeagh)  of Skelp Hill (Ned the Skelper) on 22nd November 1900 (must have been around the time of the census). Her nickname was Biddy Strall so it is definitely the same family. I have been told that her mother Sarah was a Grant. Their first child Mary Jane (McAnulty) was born in Clenagh  in 1901. By 1911 they had moved to Union Street, via Nelson Street where Brigid Sheils was born in 1903.  By 1911 their father was dead. A Sarah McLaughlin (age 24), possibly a neice was also staying with them. Eventually old Sarah McLaughlin which would be my great great grandmother came to live with them after an incident in Clenagh.

I have a copy of a photograph of old Sarah and her daughter Bridget with Bridget’s daughter, Sarah Ellen Gumbleton, my great aunt and a sister of Brigid Sheils. Although they were from Cleenagh, Roseanne’s house is not the house that Sarah lived in as it is later but not far from the old place which is down to the ground. Another of the Stralls, James McLaughlin and the youngest in the 1901 census eventually came to Derry to live with Mary Jane McAnulty.

If I get more info I will let you know. All the best, Coileán

Sorry i dont have any info [at present ] on the mc Laughlin side. But ,my great grandfather Patrick harkin
married Mary Mc Laughlin ,Fallask in 1864[according to my information].i am at present living in clonmany
and have got sidetracked into researching the Harkin connection.--interesting--.For instance your relation
'Mary and her husband Patrick Harkin were evicted with their young family in the Meendoran evictions of
1882 . I discovered my great grandmothers maiden name by talking to a gentleman who is very much alive and well and living locally .if you are resident in Inishowen afew hours in the right company in the North Pole
Bar might answer a lot of your [our] questions.
Good luck

Hello Big Pat
With the help of The family history & genealogy of Arden Gremmart & Eva Doherty, i have made contact with the grandson of Michael Harkins.
I have contacted him before but did not know the connection back then with Sarah & Mary ( Potts ) McLaughlin from Fallask,  i know nothing about the nick name as it is new to me.
It can take a Very long time to trace your relatives and get very very frustrating, but now and again something pops up just by high lighting  a name i.e Charles Harkin

Hi, Annie,
I met sons and daughters of the original Michael Harkins -who was settled in Malin and was a shoemaker
to trade. One of them-Hughie- spent the last years of his life in the rest home in Clonmany. He had a
wealth of local history and was more than willing to share it. Unfortunately we did not give him enough of our time when he was alive.I would be interested in finding out some more about the grandson of Michael
Harkin you mentioned, especially if he would be interested in talking to his cousin,
thanks-

Hi Ned
Did you ever hear the name Cassie Donaghy & her mother or grandmother Rose. Cassie used to stop at my grandmothers house in Derry while she worked i think in the shirt factory ? she would then head back down to cleanagh ? for the week end with the family.
Her brother was killed in WW2 i think in Scotland ??? the McLaughlin connection may only be through the Harkin connection ie may only be through my GG mother Sarah potts Mclaughin sister in the posts above . The info on Cassie comes from my Auntie
                                               Little Annie

Thanks for the info ,I got some more info myself today so Iwill have to sift through the census detail and try and make some sense of it.There seems to be a Doherty connection in the mix, as well ,between the two families.

Reading through the old posts I remember visiting the Harkins in Malin and hearing the Kevin Barry stories.

I have just come across the original baptisimal cert for my Grandmother Mary Donagy 2nd May 1879 in St Marys Buncrana  . Father is George Donaghy but mother is given as Catherine Mclaughlin .This would make her an aunt of of Mary McClaughlin Fallisk as my Grandmother was Marys 1st Cousin . MY Grandmother had one brother George who died young  and sisters Bridget, Sarah ,Ellen, Hannah,Cassie  . This Donaghy branch died out with the death of the son. This solves one of the connection problems for me. Would the dates be correct for the Cassie Donaghy mentioned in earlier posts

Cassie was born in 1881 she is in the  Clenagh 1901 census. There was only talk of one son he died with while cutting turf ,with a stroke. he was 19? years. My Grand mother was called Red Mary and this trend went through the generations  A neice of hers  had red hair and was married and living in Red Row in Buncrana late 1960's She was either married to a  McClauglin or Mcgonigle . I dont know which sister was her mother.

My Granny & Mother had red hair so did some of her brothers & sisters , my cousins also had red hair in the one family.
We are all darker hair, but the first granddaughter of my mothers was born with red hair she looked like Shirley Temple.

Hi Little Anne,
there are still McDaids in Tirk, I will see if I can get any info.
I believe I now own the farm in Fallask, unfortunately the old house is now in a bad state of repair, My father Paddy McLaughlin (Pott) inherited the farm from an aunt, again I will find out more.
The picture below is my father outside the house in Fallask.

Hello Gary it's great news to know the farm still in the family !! Just wondering where the name Potts come from ?
Title: Re: Annie McLaughlin Buncrana
Post by: Gary Pott on Tuesday 20 October 15 20:13 BST (UK)
there is a number of stories, one is to do with the making of a famine pot, which would tie in with the nickname cooper. That tends to be the official line, it's the easiest way to explain to people not from the area why everyone refers to me as Pott!!!
I also noticed Ballymagan being mentioned, on the other side of Falask hill is the other Pott farm where my father was born, the postal address on this is Ballynakeeloge, Ballymagan. Ballymagan was the local post office.
I will dig out some family history to see what I can find.
If you are on Facebook look up the Inishowen Heritage page, some very knowledgeable folks there.

Your right on the connections the coopers married the potts Mclaughlin!!  Sarah sister married the Harkins from meendoran. Now my question is James the son or grand son of James & Sarah Mclaughlin? . As mom used to say that they we're harkins on mclaughlin side as well but did not know much more than that,

There were two McLaughlin landholders in Fallask in Griffiths (1857): Michael McLaughlin and John McLaughlin.
In 1901 Michael’s son Charles lived in house 9. Charles was the brother of Sally McLaughlin who married James McLaughlin of Cleenagh, Little Annie’s family.
In 1901 John’s son Patrick lived in House 8 in Fallask and Patrick’s brother John (who married Mary McDaid Tirk) lived in house 10. Patrick and John’s sister Catherine married John McDaid of Meendacallaigh.
It is likely that Michael and John are cousins. John and Owen McLaughlin held land together in Fallask in the Tithes (1831) so possibly they are brothers and that Michael and John are their sons. Their houses are close together as can be seen from the numbering above.

The question to Little Annie, Gary Potts, Big Pat On and 20 Stone Ned is: are both families “Potts” or does it just apply to the family of Michael? How far back does the nickname go?

Right need to straighten things out as I am confusing people hear as I have  crossed posts!!   SARAH POTTS MCLAUGHLIN is Annie's husband James Harkin grandmother!!  So no relation to Annie??
Looking at the census of 1901 Annie and her father James are still living in Clunagh (cleenagh) with the family etc but spellings are Mcloughlin, the grandson of James which I presume is Patrick's son called James! is born in Scotland aged 4 so the question is where from and did Patrick and his son go back to Scotland?

At last I've found a marriage record for Charles Mclaughlin brother of Annie!!
Charles married Bridget Mclaughlin 2nd March 1916 parent for groom James Mclaughlin farmer , bride JOHN Mclaughlin farmer witness was James and Annie.
The marriage was 8 days after my grandparents same church St Eugene's Cathedral in Derry /Londonderry
I think they went back to Buncrana area and had one daughter who I think was called Bridget as well Charles died in  1920.

Yes, one needs to know the Districts for Donegal, then see which District theirs were in.

A brilliant website is  https://www.swilson.info/regdistmap.php

then Select the County from first dropdown box to get them for whatever County.

Then using Map see what District theirs were in.

Then Search Civil Reg using Surname/District/Yr Ranges etc

The Civil Reg (free) website https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp  is a 3 step thing

Enter Surname, District, Year Ranges etc

Hit Search and it brings one to the Captcha (security check), then the Sign In page (where I use q q  ;D )

Many think (understandably!) it is bringing them to another Website etc but it is just Security and Legislation that these have to be here!

So I have finally got round to putting people together again so it's seems Mary potts Mcloughlin from Fallask who married Patrick Hark in had quite a few children thanks to Big Pat giving me his grandfather Charles etc
Children born to Patrick and Mary from Meendoran correct spelling?
Bridget 15/11/1864
Mary1/2/1867
Hugh 17/8/1868
Michael 29/10/1870
Patrick 8/6/1872
John 17/6/1874
Charles 20/11/1877
Neal 13/7/1874
How many of these children survived to adult hood I don't know yet, but being kicked of the land by the British!
Must  have been hard enough bringing up the children with little to no money etc how did they feel as parents.
So lets put this connection to me Mary is my 3x great auntie sister of Sally Mcloughlin from Fallask known as potts Mclaughlin on my grandfathers side James Harkin. As far as I know 2 different harkin families cheers little Annie

My grandmother Annie  mother was  Sally was also from Fallask. Now the sister of potts Mclaughlin married Patrick harkin from mindoran,
My grandmothers sister from cleenagh Bridget married Ned the skelper Doherty now children from both sets of families are both dna connectioned as am I So I am thinking both SALLY's are cousins from fallask I hope this makes sense to people

Finally cracked one of  Sally Mcloughlins siblings from fallask!  Her brother was Charlie who married Ellen Breisland they had a few children about 6 or 7 of the top of my head etc its the middle of the night lol The one daughter Bridget born 1877 married Bernard Fullerton. My late grannie Annie Mclaughlin said she had cousins called Fullerton to my mother but she did know how exactly.  It seems?  That either some or all immigrated to California but don't hold me to that at the moment!  Maybe 1924 cheers little annie

This is likely to be the marriage of Rose McLaughlin, the daughter of James McLaughlin and Annie Gallagher.
To Edward J Doherty (of Ballylosky) on 5 January 1926 at Carndonagh RC Church. One of the witnesses may be her sister Lizzie McLaughlin. Note that her father was deceased.
