Alexander Trotter, born circa 1799 somewhere in County Leitrim, came to Canada about 1827 (via the Canada Company) with his wife Margaret (maiden name unknown), born circa 1799 in Ireland.
With them were sons:
- Robert Trotter born circa 1820 somewhere in County Leitrim, Ireland
- William Trotter born circa 1821 somewhere in County Leitrim, Ireland
I don't know if they had any other children who were born in Ireland.
These children were born in Pittsburgh, Frontenac County, Ontario, Canada:
- John Trotter born circa 1829
- Jane Trotter born circa 1834
- Alexander Trotter born circa 1836
- Mary Trotter born circa 1840
Alexander and Margaret's grandson, Beecham Trotter, mentioned in his book that the Trotters were from Leitrim.
Seeking any family or info on family who might have stayed in Ireland or emigrated elsewhere.
Thank you!

Hi Josephine:
My great great great grandfather was James Trotter abt. 1783 who married Sarah Campbell in the Church of Ireland, Manorhamilton, Cloonclare, Leitrim in 1819. He moved his family to ON in the late 1830's, possibly 1837. His daughter Ann married my great great grandfather Samuel Carson, who was also from Leitrim, in Grey ON. There's a good chance the Trotters and Carsons knew each other in Leitrim.
I've done a bit of work on the Trotters and am thinking yours might be related. There weren't many. I think James had a brother John, and they probably lived in Tullyskeherny townland just outside the town of Manorhamilton. There was a clump of them from here.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Best,
Ray Swanson

A few Trotter g/stones on igp-web... http://www.igp-web.com/IGPArchives/ire/leitrim/photos/tombstones/markers.htm search box on page
-
Thanks. I've already seen those.
-
Yes I knew that, of course!!
-
I do appreciate you pointing it out! No doubt the Trotter headstones at Manorhamilton COI are relatives of mine.
My main quest is trying to find my Carson Leitrim origins.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Ray

Hi, Ray:
Thanks so much for your message!
Unfortunately, I don't have any information about the Trotters' lives in Ireland or any connections to a Carson family.
All I know is that, according to Beecham's book, the family came from County Leitrim, their ship landed at Quebec and the family settled in Frontenac County, Ontario.
As adults, Beecham and his cousin Alex (my husband's g-g-grandfather) left Ontario and helped to settle the town of Brandon, Manitoba.
Beecham's book contains scant information about his family origins.
Best regards,
Josephine

Thanks Josephine:
I used to live in Brandon. Interesting.
I've had a look at what Irish records I could find, and don't see any of your relatives, mostly because the records don't usually go back far enough. The name Alexander only comes up in the Trotters from Killarga Parish who mostly lived in Altavra townland, and also Gortahork.
Looks like mine came from the Manorhamilton area, and yes, those Manorhamilton COI gravestones are my relatives.
Here are a few records which might be related to your bunch:

Hi there:
Thanks for your note.
I have Gerrard on my tree as a son of John Trotter (DOB ca 1810) and Maria Unknown, sib of Mary Anne and John.
Gerrard Trotter - Date of Birth
Date of Baptism - 25-Oct-1841
Address - Tullyskreeny - Parish/District - CLOONCLARE CHURCH OF IRELAND
Gender - Male - County - Co. Leitrim
Denomination - Church of Ireland
Father - John Trotter - Mother - Maria Not Recorded
(Tullyskeherny is a townland in Cloonclare Parish near Manorhamilton town).
Gerrard's father John was born ca 1810 (estimate), and, having lived in Tullyskeherny, was a probable son of John 1778-1852 who was married to Mary Ann maiden name unknown, but possibly Johnston because of the name of one of her grandkids.
John may have been a brother to my great great great grandfather James Trotter 1783-1881 who married Sarah Campbell in Manorhamilton. They moved to Ontario, Canada in the 1830s.
You can see there are a lot of probably's, possibly's, mostly based on geography and dates, so these connections are tentative. Due to the lack of records this may be as close as we can get to certainty other than DNA testing.
A number of my close relatives have done DNA tests with Ancestry.com and one way we can check if we're related is for you to do the test. Even better would be an older relative in the line of Gerrard.
If my above connections are correct we're probably 5th cousins or so.
One other thing, I have a marriage record for a Jarrod married to Catherine Henigan in 1864. Jarod and Gerrard were uncommon names back then and probably indicate the name of an ancestor. Not sure how Jarrod and Gerrard might be linked if at all.
Best Regards,
Ray

Jarrod and Catherine had a son John in 1868

I was hopeing to find the John from the 1871 Census but this other John might prove useful some day

Hi there:
Sorry, I have it all wrong by a generation, so disregard my previous post. Your Gerrard, if from Leitrim, may have been a son of John 1778-1852 that I don't have on my tree.
Do you have any records showing he was from Leitrim?
The Gerrard I showed in my previous post could have been a nephew of your Gerrard.
Best,
Ray

There is a will of a Thomas Trotter 1880 from Tullyskerarney, could he be another brother or cousin.

Hi, I have looked in the 1901 census and found my great grandfather Thomas Trotter born 1855. He had 2 sons, William my grandfather aged 6 at the time of the census and Thomas his brother aged 5. They had 3 sisters, Charlotte aged 13, Margaret 8 and Adelaide 3. Their mother was called Jane, possibly nee Jameson due to the fact that there is an aunt named Jameson registered to the same house aged 72.
They lived in the townland of Boihy, in the parish of Drumlease. Other than that I have very little information.
I am in the process of doing the DNA test so am happy to help others of the same name. If you can shed any light on the above please do respond.
Thanks

If they Married. Died etc elsewhere.....

I was hopeing his parents would have a child after civil registration of births started in 1864 but I can't see one up to 1870, to get her surname, they might have a marriage cert as thay weren't RC but the image of it wont be online yet if they do have one, and couples aren't matched up yet that early.
-
Possible marriage?
James Trotter of Tullyskeherny married Mary Weir of Boihy in Drumlease Church of Ireland on 30 September 1846, James' father was John Trotter, Mary's father was Spence Weir. Griffith's Valuation has an entry for Spence Weir in Boihy (print date 1857), likewise the Tithe Applotment books (1834):
http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/reels/tab//004587434/004587434_00374.pdf
You can see the possible connection of this John Trotter in previous posts of this topic.

My father , born 1899 and his parents lived at Tullyskeherney, and the ruins of the house still exist.
John Trotter was as far as i could go back to. He settled there about 1810, and his son Christopher Trotter was my grandfather. They were related to the Trotters of Boihy, who originally lived on the upper road beside a stream, and later moved to the banks of the Bonet river. Some of my Trotterts are buried in the C of I. Manorhamilton The grave stone has a small urn on top, and a biblical reading as well.
-
Sorry Christopher was my great grandfather. My fathers's middle name was Christopher.
-
Are they the ones who own the Quarry?
-
Sorry I do not have an Alexander in my Trotter branch. That was a mistake. John settled in Tullyskeherny. Two sons continued to farm there. One was Christopher, the remains of his house are still standing. Christopher was my ggfather.
The other was Thomas, whose son, Edward, had the lime kiln on the roadside. I understand that his descendants they went on to establish the quarry at Lurganboy.
Most of the info I have came from an Alfie Trotter who lived to be 100 and died some years ago.
