Hi
Did you find your ancestor Thomas Caunce ?
I am descended from George Caunce, born 1787, married Ann Woods of Bispham in 1809.
He was a farmer in Rufford and had a son called Richard, born 1818, also a farmer in Rufford.
I believe George had siblings and trying to find out more.
Kind Regards
Alison

sorry no connection, I found the old devotional book in a charity shop where i volunteer and took photos before it was sold.
There is a farmer Martin Caunce at Brow Farm near Rufford,I was in touch with him about the book.

Please replace [-- at --] with @
I also had mail from another Caunce, added below.
"I have told others that from 1680 to about 1800 our name was spelt Counce and not Caunce.
Now i have some thing writen to prove it.
As the Lancashire Parish records have then all with a "A" from 1680 onwards."

if you email me off line I can send a photo of the book.

Just found some more information in my file
The book is
Meditations on the word of God by Sturm 1807
Thomas writes in 1819
" My name his Thomas Caunce and England his my nation
Rufford his my dewelling place and heaven his my salvation.
When this you see remember me
When I have (past?) forgotten
When I ham dead and hin my grave
and all my bones are rotten"
below this in a different hand Thomas Sharrock repeats the first 4 lines
On the last page of the book a Joseph practices his name.
I have had some interesting replies from other listers, including this from 1841 census which could be the family ?
" have found a Thomas Caunce on the 1841 Census at Rufford, Ormskirk.
He is the oldest Thomas Caunce on the census.
He could be the one.
Thomas Caunce aged 50 Farmer born Lancs
Susan Caunce 47
Margaret " 25
Susan " 20
William " 18
Jane " 16
Anne " 11
James " 8
Thomas " 6
I do not have the 1851 Census.
He is not on the 1861 Census"
And the same generous person found this
"Thomas Sharrock 45 farmer
Jane 40
Betty 15
Ann 10
Jane 8
Thomas 5
Hugh 3
Richard Caunce 70"
This infers that the Caunces and Sharrocks were intermarried. On the 1841 Census there is no indication as to relationships. But it looks like Richard Caunce could be Jane's father.
I also have a contact descended from Jane and Thomas..
so you now know all that I know !
kind regards

To Alison M
I think I have your man, George Caunce, 1787, married Ann Woods (I've got date as 27 Feb. 1805, I've 7 of their children, but not the one you mention, although I've a gap between 1816 and 1821, so he could fit in there. I've George's Father as John, who married Elizabeth Forshaw in 1773. If you think it's worth exchanging info, and that we have a match I can take you back another 7 generations. Contact me on (*):)

Thomas Caunce 1801-1872 of Rufford, was my 5th great uncle on my nanna's side. On the 1841 census he is living in Holmeswood, Rufford and working as a farmer.
