Hi Ecclescake :)
I've only just seen this posting.
The only Dorothy Stevenson of roughtly the right age on the 1861 is with her grandparents in Kircudbright itself:
871 ED 1 page 14 Hight Street, Kirkcudbright
John W Stevenson, 65, letter carrier, b. Kirkcudbright, KKD
Ann, w, 67,b. Kirkcudbright, KKD
Margaret, d, unm, 26, b. Kirkcudbright, KKD
James C or E, s, unm, 23, letter carrier, b. Kirkcudbright, KKD
Annie, granddaughter, 12, scholar, b. Kirkcudbright, KKD
Dorothy, granddaughter, 10, scholar, b. Kirkcudbright, KKD
Jane McAdam, boarder, 1, b. Kelton, KKD
There is also a Dorothy A Stevenson listed in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, aged 5 but she was born Glasgow (647 ED 16 Page 2)
I can't find a birth registered for her or her sister in eeither Dumfriesshire or Kircudbrightshire at the moment. Where did you get your information?

Hi Gadget,
My many many thanks for that information on Dorothy Stevenson.
She is my grt grandmother.on my mothers fathers side.
I found her on the 1901 Census for SALFORD Lancashire with her family.
On Census it says b Glasgow. on other census it says Troqueer.
So I would say that she may well have been born in Glasgow. But I would say from information I have you have found the right Dorothy Stevenson.
The John Walker Stevenson sounds right also as Dorothy & Her husband
Robert Johnstone b 1848 in Dumfries. had a son they called John Walker Johnstone. who died about the age of 12 years in England.
I found him on the 1891 Census in SALFORD with the family but no sign of him after 1891.
Presumed he died young.
Many many thanks once again for the help.

Hi again
What is interesting are the letter carriers and postboy's wife on the 1851 and 1861. Now I think it might be worth having a look at John W Stevenson and wife in the 1851 and 1841 just to check on things :)

1851
871 ED 1 page 5 High Street, Kirkcudbright
John Walker Stevenson, 55, shoemaker, b. Kirkcudbright, KKD
Anne, wife, 57, b. Kirkmabreck, KKD (area around Creetown)
Maargaret, d, 16, b. Kirkcudbright, KKD
Not a lot of info here :(
Maybe the 1841 will have more children.

and as I've begun....... ;D
1841
871 ED 1 page 3 High Street, Kirkcudbright
John Stevenson, 45-49, Shoemaker
Anne, 45-49
Dorothy :), 15-19
Jessie, 8
James, 3
all born County
Also of interest on the opposite page:
High Street
Janet Garmany (?), 70
Walker Stevenson, 12
David Stevenson,10
Margaret Stevenson, 6
all born County
Now this looks very much like the Margaret Stevenson on the 1851.
Also note the Dorothy :)
Do you think Dorothy/Dorothea's father was Walker or David?

still going :)
1851
871 Ed 1 Page 9 High Street, Kirkcudbright
Walker Stevenson, 23, joiner
Anne, wife, 25
Anne, d, 2 mths
all born Kirkcudbright.
This Anne could possibly be the one with John W on the 1861.

more and more....
1861
867 ED 7 Page 12
Lancefield, Kirkcudbright
Walker Stevenson, 34, ships carpenter
Marion, w, 35,
Marie/Maria, d, 6
John, s, 5
Margaret, d, 3
Mary Jane, 1
All born Kirkcudbright
Now has Anne become Marion or did Anne die and the older two girls are with grandparents :-\

Two marriages for a Walker Stevenson:
21 Jan 1849, Borgue, KKD to Agnes Houston
17 April 1854, Kirkcudbright, KKD to Marion Sharpe
It looks very much as if Anne/Agnes might have died in childbirth or something and Walker remarried - conjecture but looks strongly possible.

Added -
Birth 30 March 1828 Minnigaff, KKD
Agnes Houston. Parents Robert Houston and Agnes McIlveen
A possible for Marion Sharpe
Birth 16 November 1822 Kirkcudbright, KKD
