Title: Elinor Beynon, help.......................
Post by: Helina on Saturday 20 January 07 18:38 GMT (UK)
Looking for any information on the any family belonging to Elinor Beynon, born 1809 (c) Oxwick, Polmer, Wales. she married in Bristol 1838 to John Coole, and died again in Bristol 1907.  Only thing I know her father was called David.

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

osprey,
Do not know Wales that well so you could be right.  Also I realize that its a shot in the dark with a surname called Beynon but thought I would give it a go.

My mother's family name was Williams, dreaded researching her side, but no the Williams were farmers and stayed in the same village for years. Went back to 1772 in one afternoon on the internet, shocked and pleasantly surprised.

Yes checked her out in the census
1861 P?,Glamorgan
1871 Porlmer?,Glamorganshire(Thats what its transcribed as Its not that but cant read it)
1881 South Wales
1891 Gower,Glamorgan
1901 Wales
An Oxwich is in the Gower in the county of  Glamorgan as Ospreys already said .

think the place of birth on 1861 and 1871 might be Port Eynon written as one word - it's a couple of miles form Oxwich.

unfortunately, seem to be at least 2 David Beynons of similar age in the area
1841 Overton Village H0107/1424/29 folio 9 pg 9
David Beynon 65 farmer
David 35
Mary 30
Ann 5
John 2
plus 5 servants including Ann Beynon 15 and John Eynon 10

Overton Village H0107/1424/29 folio 10 pg 11
David Beynon 60
Bridget 60
Margaret Williams 2

marriages
David Bynon of Port Eynon m Mary Thomas of Port Eynon 1/1/1797 in Port Eynon

David Bynon of Port Eynon m Bridget Fox of Port Eynon 2/4/1804 in Port Eynon

There's another marriage for a David Bynon in Penrice in 1796 - Port Eynon is the parish to the west of Oxwich, Penrice to the north mainly. There's also a David Beynon marrying in Llanrhidian around the time, but that's a little bit further away.

One of the Davids was buried 25/8/1846 aged 74.

Sorry, I don't have baptisms for the area, although someone else on the site might with any luck. If not, Glamorgan Family History Soc have transcriptions of baptisms for Port Eynon - not sure about Oxwich, though.

Hi maryp,

Thank you for this information.  Sorry do not know Wales well, but where is St. Cattwg Porteynon? is it part or near Oxwich, Polmer?

I will be in touch again, Elinor Beynon would be my Great Great Grandmother.

St. Cattwg is the parish church in Porteynon (Gower Peninsula), Glamorgan, Wales.
I looked at the original of the 1871 Census for Elinor and after a lot of experience seeing Porteynon "butchered" in census records.. I'm convinced that it was a misspelling.. "Portinon Parish"

While Porteynon is next to Oxwich, and many families moved back and forth.. there are no Elinor Beynon's baptised in Oxwich.
I'm really quite sure that your Elinor is the one listed above .. daughter of David and Bridget Fox Beynon of Porteynon.

Once someone moves out of the "Gower Peninsula" ..it's common to see just "Gower" as a birthplace instead of a specific town.
Sometimes the actual town such as Porteynon is listed..
and other times an individual will list the "area" within a town.. like "Overton" which was a section of Porteynon.

Let me know if you need any more help.

Have been busy searching familysearch with the Beynon family, with little luck.  Could you give me anymore information on this family, please.

Do you want more information onElinor Beynon and the Coole family who she married into?  If so I'll send a personal e-mail with required information.

Hi my great, great, great grandfather was Phillip Beynon, Ellinor's brother, Ellinor married john coole in 1838, making Ellinor Beynon, Ellinor coole. Phillip and ellinor's parents were, David and Bridget benon. They lived in Llanelli around the gower, Phillip stayed and became the master mariner/ pilot of port Eynon. He died on the Agnes Jack with all 18 of the crew in 1883. On the gower peninsula.
Ellinor moved to Bristol and died in 1907.

Thank you for information given.  I have a full knowledge of the Coole family but know very little about Elinor Beyon's family.

I'll PM you
