Title: 1851 census William Henry Sherry
Post by: dawnsh on Thursday 25 January 07 10:11 GMT (UK)
Hello all

Can't get to the library until the weekend to use their copy of Ancestry so am asking for some help in the meantime.

William Henry Sherry born around 1819 in Bath living with a 'wife'
Mary Ann nee Wood(w)ard born around 1828 in Suffolk
daughter Mary Ann born around 1848 London
daughter Amelia born around 1851 London (may not have been born by census)

William and Mary 'possibly' didn't marry until 1853 just before emigrating to Australia.

Thanks in advance
Dawn

Hi Isobelruss

Thanks for the lookup.

I wonder where Mary Ann and the child(ren) are?

Will rummage around at the library this weekend to see if I can find them. Hopefully they won't be too far from William.

I can't see Mary Ann and the girls in 1851,but I have found the parents marriage.

William Henry Sherry and Mary Ann Woodard married in the Dec 1/4 of 1853 in Lambeth the ref if you want to get the cert is Volume 1d page 433.

What a great surname to be looking for.........and when it all gets too much you can go and get the Sherry  ;D ;D ;D

Hi Carol

I lived with the surname for 22 years before I got married and had great fun with a work colleague whose surname was Cherry. We frequently got each others phonecalls at work  ;D clients weren't too impressed when they got the wrong department though, I was in purchasing, she was in credit control. We thought we might be related somewhere down the line, but genealogy has proved us not to be.

Back to the look-up, did you look-up the girls under Sherry, Woodard, Woodward or all 3? Just need to clarify so I don't repeat this when I go to the library next time.

Hi Dawn

Yes I did look under all three- one looked promising......a Mary Ann Woodard, but she was living in Suffolk with the wrong hubby  >:(

I think I can see Mary Ann Sherry's birth in 1848- but Amelia(1851?) doesn't seem to appear under any of the surnames does she?

Good luck

Thanks Carol,

Here's a thought, maybe the girls weren't William's!!  :o

What details do you have for Suffolk.

I'd assumed the girls were born out of wedlock and William and Mary Ann married just before going to Australia in 1853 for propriety's sake.

Puzzled now  ???

Well done Welsh lady,I didn't think little Mary might be with grandma.

I must be getting hungry and tired  ;D

I did look at that Mary Ann,but saw Bristol and the fact that she didn't have her daughter with her and ignored it.

Daft so and so aren't I ?

Ladies......

Too much information all at once, I can't keep up.

Welsh Lady,  Bristol Suffolk maybe a typo, do have access to the actual scan to double check the place of birth.

Also this surname Woodard/Woodward is getting to me. I thought variations on Sherry were tough enough.

I'm afraid it does look very much like Suffolk Bristol.

Unless anyone has more local knowledge of Suffolk as to what else it could be.

For once the writing is clear and not spidery and faint.

Doesn't help at all does it Dawn  ::)

Yes i agree it does say Bristol Suffolk the census enumerator has obviously misheard Bristol. If shes the correct Mary Ann?
And have just found out by going to the 1861 census
Mary Ann Woodward age 3 with Grandmother in 1851 is not yours see below
1861 Hanwell Middlesex
John Woodward,Head,44,Lab,Hanwell
Mary Woodward,Wife,45,Twickemham
Mary Ann Woodward,Dau,13,Hanwell
Elizabeth Woodward,Mother,Widow,68,Dronfield Derbyshire

So back to looking again for the younger Mary Ann.
Best Wishes Welsh Lady

Hello all

Here's an update.

I posted a message on the Suffolk board to see what results I got there.

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,210219.0.html

It would appear there was a place known as Bristle Green in Suffolk.

Although the Suffolk baptisms I'm after aren't on the IGI, it would appear the LDS have scanned the registers. I've not ventured into a LDS Family History Centre so I don't know what the procedure is for ordering films but I must add that my 2 nearest centres are not that local - Watford and Chelsea - not a million miles away but I only have school hours during the week to fit outings into.

Anyway.....

The 1853 marriage of William Sherry and Mary Ann Woodaard is on the IGI although it's one of those 'I' batches. Having looked at it, I'll plod through the GRO indeces again because Williams father's name is not Isaac as shown. I may have missed another candidate around 1848 when the marriage was supposed to have taken place.

Thanks for looking at the 1861 census, Welsh Lady, and ruling out that 1851 3yr old Mary Ann in Hanwell. Every little snippet helps.

Unfortuately I didn't get to the library today while my daughter had her dance/music classes as I had to do some shopping for my mother-in-law who has got home from a week away with a really stinky cold. This next week is looking too full to get there and it's still only Saturday. Decisions..... housework or family tree? tough call

Thanks to everyone who's been helping so far.

Dawn
