I am trying to trace when this family left the UK.
George Polsom born 1874 Gloucestershire
Harriet Elizabath Polsom born 1877 Bream
Thomas George Polsom born March 1897 in Barry Glamorgan
George Polsom born 1898 in Barry Glamorgan
They were in Wales in 1901 and Thomas George signed up for the Canadian army in 1916. His residence at that time was Indian Head, Sask.
Any help would be great as I am well and truly stuck.

Hi Nicky,
Have you already looked on Ancestry.com?
Best Wishes, Romilly.
-
Hi Romilly, I have looked and there are entries for the name Polsom but I only have a subscription to ancestry.co.uk
I have tried many sites but am not getting very far, so do wonder what the entries on ancestry.com are!
Any help is appreciated.
Nicky
-
Hi Nicky,
I did have an annual subscription to Ancestry.com, but it expired at Christmas!
However, there are lots of folks on here who suscribe, - & so I'm sure that someone will help you out. Have you tried looking at the Beta list though? (Its free).
Best of Luck, Romilly.
-
Hi Nicky,
I checked for your Polsom's in the 1911 Canada census, and I wasn't able to see them there. You can check for yourself at www.automatedgenealogy.com
If they were not in Canada in 1911, then that narrows down your search a bit from 1911 to 1916 :)
JJ and Jeffandro are from Sask. so they may be able to help you find them.
Karen
-
Hi Karen
Many thanks, hadnt found that site.
That helps with narrowing search down, i always thought it was a family tale that they had gone to Canada, until I found the sign up papers of Thomas George in 1916!
nicky
-
No problem Nicky,
You can search the passenger lists here
http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/passenger/001045-130-e.html
they are not indexed, so you have to go page by page.

Speaking of me ;D
Hello Nicky,
As Saskatchewan is a very small and young province alot of the information is kept private or very hard to find. But I was able to find 1 reference to a George Polsom on one site I frequent. This province has a bunch of old township history books scanned and put online, it is by no means complete but Indian Head was on there.
http://www.ourroots.ca/e/page.aspx?id=546668
Further... I checked Regina's newspaper index and found 2 death notices in the paper, one a George died in 1999 and the other a Sylvia??
Lastly checking this site
http://www.canada411.ca or
http://www.whitepages.ca
I find about 7/8 Polsoms living in Regina. You maybe related to Coopers in Indian Head too.
BTW Karen, J.J. is from Winterpeg I believe I'm one of the few from Saskatchewan. It said in that write up Karen they were homesteading at Township 19 Range 12 W2 which is just a stone throws away ....will check the copy at CGC website
Jeff

Hi Jeff
I really appreciate this, like I said I thought it was family tales that said my Great GreatAunt emigrated!
This is a real step forward, I will take a look right now at the links you have posted.
Many thanks.

Speaking of me ;D
BTW Karen, J.J. is from Winterpeg Jeff
LOL, your ears must have been burning ;D
oh sure she may be in winterpeg, but she's originally from Sask. :P ;)
Good job on finding the stuff for Nicky!!
Karen
-
hi Annie, dont think he is mine, as now know they went to Canada in 1909, must trace them in the 1911,which I havent!!
Karen if you can help please do, Jeff has given me much more than I ever had!
nicky
-
Nicky,
I just read the article Jeff put up, what a sad tragic story :'(
It says that they went to Indian Head in 1909? so then they should be in the 1911 Census if that's true?
Karen
-
I just read the extras, as I've been trawling through the Indian Head list for surnames and couldn't see anything even close...It is complete...so now that I know they immigrated in 1909...hmmmmm...did I miss them...Must be a very large transcription or spelling error...
Will try once more... J.J.
-
I tried something different, went through the transcriptions for a Harriet...
No can find....??? Looked for just Har on page, just in case...
http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/Test2.jsp?sdid=9242
-
I'm still not having luck finding them on the 1911 either?
Karen
-
Didn't read the bio as am trying to also do other things....did it say they were in indian Head or just that they immigrated in 1909?
ahem, by the way, Jeff...Born in Montmartre...spent teenhood in Davidson...
Hubby's from Prince Albert Sask...Have ancestral origins in Odessa...& they started out in... "Indian Head!"
;D :D :) ;) J.J.
-
Okay fine J.J.....you win...btw Odessa being German Mennonite or Doukabor/Ukrainian? or are you a germanium? My grandpa's first official landing was in Indian head too..
Maybe or when I have a free moment I'll check out the one Polsom obituary in the Leader Post. Possibly find you a living rellie. As well with Saskatchewan's 100 year anniversary just a year ago there maybe fresh information to look at down at my library.
Where the heck is Montmarte?
Jeff
-
Hi, Jeff ...My Grandparents were from Italy... then Bukovina...(then in Austria...but has changed hands over the years!) They started out in Balgonie Sask. ....also where they raised the first of their many children... ( so, Italian name, lived in Austria/Hungary and spoke German!)
Montmartre is a little village/town (then a hamlet, I think?) Just a few towns away from Odessa...I think if I remember. Kipling was between them...moved in 1967 so that was a while ago...(ahem...stop doing the math! )
I read the little story on the family...Can't imagine how aweful it must have been to have been abandoned like that in those days...and the bitter cold in the country....
p.s. what did I win? ;D trip to the Tropics? ;) J.J.
p.p.s.....Loved the "Germanium" quip!
-
Hi Nicky...Good job that Jeff has come through for you as all I can find are references to Polsoms in sask...One is an advocate of cooperatives and has
a publication...another a politician...etc...
Have tried many things on the 1911...don't see them.... ::) :P :P :-[ :-[ :-\ :-\
Here is your George... definitely says Polsom....but he was under Polson...

Many thanks to all of you that have helped me. This is such a leap forward with this line.
I wonder if the 1909 emigration date was right if they cant be found in the 1911 census?
I will be busy today!!
Nicky
-
Hey Nicky,
How's the hunting going? I went down to the library (for you yesterday) and was able to look up that obituary for George Polsom who died in March 12, 1999.
I was able to get a few names of living rellies and phone numbers if you wish to have them. Just leave me a PM (Rootschat privacy policy notwithstanding)..
Jeff
-
Nice going Jeff... ;D
Since I haven't lived in Sask for many many moons...I guess YOU win! ;)

Hey J.J...
Isn't Mont?? near Indian Head???
Jeff
-
Yes, a long bumpy horse & buggy ride to the dentist away, if I recall.... :P
Don't laugh, that's how we got there one time, when my mom needed a
ride that's all who was going....and the real nightmare was the dentist at the other end of the journey! Ahhhhhhhh!
We'd better stop hijacking Nicky's post...
Sorry, Nicky! Good luck with your research...
all the best to all of you!...J.J.
-
Jeff, just a thought ( I have those) maybe you know more about the 1911
than I do...I didn't get the numbers on the publication for the area the Polsoms lived in... one of the numbers seemed awefully big & didn't find him on the Land records...
anyhoo....could they maybe have been rural enough to have fallen within
another district for the census?...I just looked and lots of the areas in
Qu`Appelle are not completed yet, including Sintaluta...J.J.

Hi Annie,
I Came by this almost by mistake. I have been researching my Polsom links for some time, and are currently researching my Great Granduncle who i am very proud of. Especially with the Loos anniversary upon us. Could you please let me know where you obtained the obituary for him as it has amazed me how you came by it.

Some kind people are transcribing the lists from the headstones for the International Wargraves Photography Project ( You can add a thought under "flowers")
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=15353555
The next piece of information came from: Commonwealth War Graves Commission
"Remembered with honour " was added by Annie as she wanted you to know how she felt about him...

and Annie has given you the link to the medal cards on her reply...

No need to quote every time you say thanks... Have fun in the forum! ;D J.J.

Hi, are you still looking for contact/info on the family Polsom in the Regina, Saskatchewan area? I am from that family and am directly related to most in the area in some way or another. I just came across this thread totally by accident when searching out of curiosity for some family history/roots. Fairly certain it is the line you are looking for, and I plan to call my dad tonight ;-)

Further to yesterday's post, I have discovered that George you speak of was my great great grandfather, and his son George was my great grand father. Harriet would have been my great great grandmother as a result. I would love to know what became of her if anyone knows. I haven't been successful in finding a grave for her at this time but the pursuit carries on!
-
Yep they should be on the census...bet we can find them on there now!!
Registration Number: 7333
FRANK POLSON 1908 / 7 / 29 INDIAN HEAD
Mother HARRIETT ELIZABETH PRCEST ( Preest of course) / Father GEORGE POLSON
-
Wow, thanks for that...a child not mentioned in the Indian Head history book. More work...where did Frank go..... =-)
-
I looked into the deaths but he's not on there...perhaps he died after 1911...Keep checking as they'll add more births, deaths as they go http://www.isc.ca/VitalStatistics/Genealogy/vsgs_srch.aspx
Mind you the story said they lost several children so there should be several on there eventually. I don't see any at all listed in this town cemetery http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cansacem/indian_head.html
I still can't find them on the 1911...just tried the Qu'appelle district ??? ( no full surname) listings and still didn't find them....and wondered why the number in the ourroots didn't jive...so just now looked on the Homestead index,
and he is on there now!!! http://www.saskhomesteads.com
1253526 Polsom, George NW 20 16 12 W2 So they had 19 instead of 16
Lost my own bet...as I think this is where they should be in 1911 and the right numbers start at page12 so I guess they may have been missed unless someone can find thos numbers elsewhere? There are TONS of illegible entries, that's certain

mightyjen welcome to rootschat by the way...Good that you came on board as now Nicky has an answer for immigration dates...Husband came first as often happened, but a long wait for her & children!

thank you for the welcome and your help :), I have so much to learn about researching and sources! I found an extensive family tree that someone has put online with Polsom ancestors in common that has greatly taken some of the detective work out of things. Busily filling in some of the blank spots...amazing work, I plan to email them and tell them so!
-
Hi MightyJen
Sorry just caught up with this thread!!!!
I have no idea what became of Harriet, still trying to find that one out!
Nicky
-
Well Hi there =-). I've managed to gather some family stories regarding her disposition, but I haven't been able to prove/disprove any of it. Am I right when I say her sister was your great aunt/direct relative and she came to Canada with her? Did you ever find out what happened to her? The IndianHead history book doesnt' mention her at all but she obviously came with her. There was also at least two more children with George that lived after coming to Canada, not sure the whereabouts of the Frank mentioned above, but there was another that either is still alive or recently deceased...trying to sort out his whereabouts. I also know there was at least one girl, possibly two that were also born to a different father. Serious drama family history =-).
-
Hello, I know this is a late response, but I am with one of the Polsom line and have contacted Nicky, but I also noticed your inquiry on Cooper, and yes, they are connected! Harriet's oldest son George married Earnest Cooper's daughter, and my fiancee is his great grandson, and is the spitting image of him! There is a portrait hanging in my Polsom's father's house, I would gladly take a picture of it and pass it along if you are interested! And I might be able to get some answers for you as well. Let me know. Ana
-
Welcome to rootschat Ana!! How fabulous that you have information and images for the poster Nicky & KPolsom, jonesdaz & Jen! Getting quite a crowd looking in on this thread!!! ;D J.J.
Oh, Jeff & Karen......Winterpeg is Summerpeg right now. So hot! We normally get 70 cm rain in July, this year only 10 and it has been close to or above 30 since I can't remember ( brain fried!)
-
Thank you JJ! I have an enormous amount of info, as my fiancee's dad seems to be the keeper of the history, and oh the stories we hear are fabulous! I have sent mail to both of them, and hopefully will fill in the gaps, and what I dont know can be found out rather quickly. There are more Polsoms than you all can imagine, and somehow Dad seems to know everything!!! I wouldn't be surprised if he knew Nicky and Jen somehow LOL
-
Hehe, Dad already, is he? ;D ( and capitalized, I like that)...and how nice that you and he are both interested in genealogy & family history!! Great start, I'd say! Like my approval means anything but diddly... :P ;D J.J.
-
Was the happiest day when I started calling him Dad :D And I love genealogy, mine is a very short walk, as an Armenian, and as an adoptee, I guess I have now adopted the Polsom's!
-
Hi There from Canada. I am the great grandson of the people you have referenced in your post. My great grandparents emigrated to Indian Head Saskatchewan in the early 1900's. My name is Ernest Polsom. My direct email is (*). We know nearly nothing about our family history prior to our great grandparents emigration to Canada and would love to correspond.
