do not know about looking just for one soldier but the 10th London Regiment was The Hackney Battalion. If you  google "10th London Regiment" there are anumber of sites that deal with this regiment one that you could look at is http://www.regiments.org you will have to do a search of the site to get to the 10th's page but once there it gives some of the history and time line for them. Hope it is of some use.

Thanks I have already visited that site.  :(

He states his father was a Raphel Harris a Diamond Cutter Deceased.

I can not find him on the 1901 census he may have been abroad somewhere?

The only Raphael I can find is a Head of a Jewish Establishment in Paddington.

Oh well never mind I suppose he will turn up some day.

Thank you for your help much appreciated.

He married at St Jude's Bethnal Green which was a C of E

His wife says her father was Louis Baker an Actor.

HI Annie

No I am afraid I do not.

I noticed or think there are other people also as there are four entries on the page.

Would it be against the rules to list them also?

Thanks for your help.

The medal cards come in sixes .... sometimes it helps if you're not quite sure which one is yours !!  ;)

but you have his service numbers and so "that" card is yours !!

It's possible he was in the Boer War also ... that's why you can't find him in 1901 .... what was his date of birth do you know ??

Nope !!!!!!!!!!!!  just aged 30 at marriage in 1916 and father Raphael.

It is my  husband's grand-father.

His mother is un-well and memory is vague so does not re-call.

No known photograph and my husband does not remember him.

Well here goes - Andy Pay has blinded me with science !!  ::) ::) I asked him about the 10th London turning into the Rifle Brigade ..... I didn't know if that was applicable here !!

Sandy ........ you said Frederick got married in 1916 .... wonder if he was on leave ?Anyways ......

Quote
Hi Annie,
Complicated, but I will give you a run down. Basically it became a territorial battalion of the Rifle Brigade in 1916 but here's the lead up.
It was the 18th Middlesex Rifle Volunteer Corps raised in 1860 as the 36th Middlesex Rifle Volunteer Corps.
1880 it bacame the q8th Middlesex Rifle Volunteer Corps
1881 in bacame a Volunteer battalion of the Rifle Brigade.
1900-02 a detachment served in South Africa with the City Imperial Volunteers
1908 in became the 10th (Copunty of London) Battalion the London Regiment (Paddington Rifles)
1912 it reformed as 10th (County of London) Battalion THhe London Regiment (Hackney)
1914-18 the 1/10th Battalion and the 2/10th Battalion served in Gallipoli, Palestine and France and 3/10th raised as a training battalion.
1916 it became a territorial battalion of the Rifle Brigade
1922 it became 10th London Regiment (Hackney).
1929 it became a territorial battalion of the Royal Berkshire Regiment and was never thereafter affiliated with the Rifle Brigade.

OK now to the nitty gritty, a lot of men from the Rifle Brigade were transferred into the 1/10th and 2/10th battalions.
Hope this answers your question tongue.gif

;D ;D Well done Annie, not bad, not bad at all, source is "The Rifle Brigade - Militia, Volunteer and Territorial Regiments - The Middlesex Volunteer Rifle Corps" by Michael Haines, an ex Rifle Brigade Officer who unfortunately passed away early last year, a good friend and an inspiration for me with the assistance given on the Rifle Brigade.

Thanks for P.M.

What I really needed to know was how would I find any reference to Frederick's
service records before a trip to the National Archives (is this also known as the
London Record Office stated by Andy above).

Thanks

Sandy,

Luckily for you I’m nerdy enough to have a copy of the medal roll for the 10th London Regiment! The details for 421119 Pte. Frederick Harris are as follows:

2(b) 6.8.15 to 13.12.15
4(a) 18.12.15 to 18.3.16
4(b) 19.3.16 to 19.1.19

In layman’s terms 2(b) is Gallipoli, 4(a) is Egypt until March 1916 and 4(b) is Egypt and the Palestine Campaign. All in all, Fred was pretty fortunate to have remained with the battalion from Gallipoli to the end of the war as the 1/10th Londons took particularly heavy casualties at Suvla Bay in 1915 and 2nd and 3rd Gaza in 1917.

Regards,

Steve

HI Alison.

Welcome to Rootschat.  :)

I am afraid my husband grand-father Frederick is not the same
person as you list above.

Therefore I am sorry to say that I do not have any infomation
to help you.

Maybe another rootschatter could have.

It might be an idea to ask for help on the County board where
you know he was living or his relatives.

Best of luck.

Hello Alison,

Assuming that he is Frederick Robert Harris, TF/3177 of 2/10th Bn Middlesex Regiment and from Hastings, then what survives of his service record is on Ancestry.

Have you found his medal index card and entries on CWGC and SDGW?

Hi  everyone.
This is my first post and I would be grateful if some one can help.
I am trying to find some information on my grandfathers service during WW1. All I know is that he served in the 10th london regiment and was posted in Gallipoli and Turkey, were he spent time guarding Turkish POW near Galata bridge. Born in1899, I believe he joined aged 16
I have tried to find his medal and service records on ancestry, but have had no luck with this.
A big thanks to any one that can help me.

We wonder if anyone could help us find out any information about our great uncle Private Edward James Rudd, 422509, 10th Battalion, London Regiment.  He was born in Old Ford, East London in 1894 and died at the Battle of the Somme on 24th August 1918.  We have learnt that he was mentioned in despatches on 24th September 1917 for something that happened near St. Julien and we wondered if we could find out what he was mentioned in despataches for.  Any information would be appreciated. Thank you for your help. Regards Pat and Barbara
Title: Re: 10th London Regiment

Hello Pat and Barbara and welcome to Rootschat.

Edward was with 2/10 Battalion and looking at his medal index card, went to France and Flanders with the original draft in February 1917.

The Long Long Trail has a brief synopsis of their movements within 58th (2/1 London) Division here:

http://www.1914-1918.net/58div.htm

I am assuming that you have his medal index card and the London Gazette entry. His service record does not appear to have survived (which is not unusual).

The next move, if you are interested in taking it further, would be to obtain the war diary. This is referenced under WO 95/3009, (175 Infantrey Brigade) at the National Archives. Fortunately it is available for download via Documents Online on the link below:

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details/AssetMain?iaid=C4556160

I don't have it myself, so can't look up the relevant dates. If you do go down this route, firstly make sure that you download all the files. I believe it comes in four parts. Secondly, I should be able to help you with the St Julien actions, as I have trench maps etc for the area. France 1918 is outside my scope, but there will be others here who can help.

Hi Phil,

MiD posted at last had to shrink the file.

Thank you for taking time to reply, yes we do have a copy of the medal index card but I can't see the Military Medal on there, am I correct?  London Gazette entry?

Thanks for the info on the War diary will follow this up.

As you can see i have finally copied the MiD we can not read the signature of the Major General Commanding  any ideas?

Better make that enough questions for now as I am sure you will hear from Pat as well.

Hello Barbara,

There is a second medal index card for the MM, that won't be on Ancestry:

It should be his one: http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=D6215431

London Gazette entry: http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/30424/supplements/13020
