Title: Can you help a Sassenach ?
Post by: Foz on Tuesday 30 January 07 08:00 GMT (UK)
Hello everybody,
I do hope someone can help me.  I'm trying to do my friends tree for her birthday in May.  I'm really very stuck on one branch.  Her Grandfather was John Clark Hairstens/Hairstaines b.c.1884 Dumfries.  On 1st December 1905 he married Ellen Morrison b. 1884 Penpont.
I think he had 5 siblings:
Mary b.c.1882  Stranraer
David b.c.1887  Dumfries
Alfred b.c.1888  Kilmarnock
Jane b.c.1896  Partick
Sarah b.c.1900  Dumfries

I'm desperate to find anything more about them, and their parents John Clark Hairstens, a dancing teacher and his wife Jane McCowan/McGowan.  I know nothing about John Clark Hairstens senior, but I think maybe Jane McCowan was born 1882 Edinburgh.
I would be very grateful for any help at all, and if you could go any further back that would be great,
I'm not asking for much, am I !!!!!!!!      ::)      :o      ::)     :o

Thank you very much
Regards
Foz

Hello Foz

One piece of info to start you off.

On www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk , one credit gets the following information:

John Hairstens married Jane McCowen (note spellings), at St Giles, Edinburgh in 1882.

5 further credits would let you view the actual certificate, which will give you the names of both the bride and the groom's parents, and take you back a generation.

You can purchase a minimum of 30 credits for £6.00 - fabulous value!

I will have a look now on the 1881 census discs and see if I can find John and Jane anywhere.

Regards

Ellen.

Hi again Foz - a few more bits of info:

Can't find anything yet on the 1881 census discs. So went to scotlandspeople again and searched the 1871 census for a John Hairstens. Found only one relevant one (for the cost of only one credit again). For another 5 credits, you could view the full census page online.

This was John Hairstens, age 13, at Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire - very close to Dumfries.

Went then to Ancestry and checked the 1861 census for an approx 3 year old John Hairstens (or variation on the spelling!), and found what is almost certainly him with his family as follows:

Living at 39 Church Street, Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire

Burgas Hairstone (cracking name - love it!), age 43, Gardner, b. Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire
Mary Hairstone, age 32, wife, b. Sanquhar, Dumfrieshire
Mary Hairstone, age 20, daughter, factory worker, b. Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire  (so looks like Mary above is Burgas' 2nd wife)
John Hairstone, age 3, b. Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire
Jane Clark, age 30, sister in law, (forgot to note down her place of birth, but think it was Sanquhar also - will recheck).

So looks like Mary Hairstone is nee Clark, which fits nicely with John Clark Hairstone/Hairstens' middle name and makes it fairly certain this is the right family.

Hope this is of some help in getting you going.  No luck with Jane's side yet, but I'll keep trying.

Cheers

Ellen.

Hello ellenavon,

Thank you so much for your findings !   Well done.   ;D

Burgas Hairstone  -    what a name !!     :o     I will spend some time this weekend looking at

scotlandspeople to see what I can find.

Thanks once again.

Hello again,    ;D

I've searched www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and found  John Hairstens parents were Mary Clark and

Thomas Hairstone (not Burgas as on 1861 census !), and Jane McCowens parents were Thomas

McCowen and Sarah Cairns.

Thomas's parents were John Hairstone/Hairsten/various spellings!  and Margaret Peden.

Mary Clarks parents were John Clark and Jean Sommerville

Now, I can't find anything at all about Thomas McCowens or Sarah Cairns parents.  I've studied the

original copies of certs on scotlandspeople and find them unable to read.

Can anyone help please ?    :D

Hi Foz

If I can make two suggestions:

You could post the relevant section of the cert. image here on RootsChat - RootsChatters love the challenge of "Can anyone make out what this says..." or,

You can contact Scotlands People regarding an illegible image and they can send you out a paper copy which is normally much clearer, see this link: www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/help/index.aspx?r=1210

The most obvious birth and marriage details for Thomas are actually under the variant of MCEWEN:

THOMAS MCEWEN     Christening:  12 MAY 1822  Old Luce, Wigtown, Scotland
Parents: Father: JAMES MCEWEN    Mother: ANN LATIMORE

THOMAS MCEWEN     Spouse: SARAH CAIRNS
Marriage:  13 FEB 1851  Old Luce, Wigtown, Scotland

And the IGI children:

1. JESSIE MCCOWEN  Birth: 27 APR 1867 Stranraer, Wigtown, Scotland
2. THOMAS MCCOWEN Birth: 30 MAR 1865 Stranraer, Wigtown, Scotland
3. JANE MCCOWEN Birth: 04 SEP 1862 Stranraer, Wigtown, Scotland
4. ANN MCCOWEN Birth: 20 DEC 1856 Old Luce, Wigtown, Scotland
5. ELIZABETH MCCOWEN Birth: 30 MAR 1865 Stranraer, Wigtown, Scotland
6. ISABELLA MCCOWAN Christening: 20 SEP 1851 Old Luce, Wigtown, Scotland

I think Thomas was married before he married Sarah Cairns. There is is this marriage entry, also under McEwen:

THOMAS MCEWEN     Marriages: Spouse:  MARY ANN HEUCHAN
Marriage:  01 JUL 1844  Old Luce, Wigtown, Scotland

And this birth entry for probably the Robert McCowen who shows as son in 1851:

ROBERT MCEWEN     Christening: 28 AUG 1842  Old Luce, Wigtown, Scotland
Parents: Father: THOMAS MCEWEN    Mother: MARY ANN HUCHAN

And for the Sarah who shows with the family in the 1861 Census:

SARAH MCWHIRTER MCEWEN  Christening:  10 MAR 1845  Old Luce, Wigtown, Scotland. Parents: Father:  THOMAS MCEWEN  Mother: MARIANNE HEUCHAN

The info is looking good for Thomas, but as for Sarah with her Irish side.......
Might be worthwhile looking for her in the 1841, she may have come over with her family before her marriage.

Hi Monica,   ;D

Many thanks for all the details you've managed to find for me -  Wonderful !    ;D

It's a shame Sarah came from Ireland,  I've looked for someone else in Ireland before, and didn't have any luck at all.   :(

Once again many thanks, you've been a great help.

Hi Foz

A possible clue as to where Sarah Cairns came from in Ireland on IGI, amazingly  :o an actual extract:

JOHN KEARNS  Birth: 06 FEB 1822  Dromore Parish, Down, Ireland
Parents: Father: SAMUEL KEARNS  Mother: ISABELLA

Mother's maiden name Isabella BROWN.

You might want to trace some of the Cairns (Kairns) showing in Old Luce in the 1841 census onwards, the names Samuel and Isabella/Elizabeth crop up (either born Ireland or Wigtownshire). Not many entries, may well be related to Sarah.

Regards.

:o Wait a minute...I wonder if parents (and Sarah) came over after the 1841 Census. Just found this entry in 1851:

Samuel Cairns    73, carter, b. Ireland
Isabella Cairns 54, Flowerer Or Muslin Sewer, b. Ireland
James Cairns    30, Ag labourer, b. Ireland
Isabella Cairns 22, Flowerer Or Muslin Sewer, b. Ireland
Elizabeth Cairns 20, Flowerer Or Muslin Sewer, b. Ireland
Dorothy Cairns    16, Flowerer Or Muslin Sewer, b. Ireland
Helen Cairns 14, Flowerer Or Muslin Sewer, b. Ireland

Address: Main Street, Glen Luce

Would fit wouldn't it...I'll have a look in the 1861...

Isabella may have died by 1861 and Samuel is doing funnies with his age:

Samuel Cairns    76, carter, b. Ireland
James Cairns    40, carter, b. Ireland
Elizabeth Cairns 26, seamstress, b. Ireland
Mary Brown 4, granddaughter, b. Glenluce, Wigtonshire

Address: Main St, Old Luce

This looks like the IGI entry for child Mary showing above, daughter to Elizabeth by the look of it:

MARY CAIRNS  Birth: 24 OCT 1856  Old Luce, Wigtown, Scotland
Parents: Mother: ELIZ. CAIRNS

You're in luck  ;) Isabella Brown looks to have died post 1855. A likely death entry showing for her on SP:

1860   CAIRNS   ISABELLA/ BROWN    U*   OLD LUCE OR GLENLUCE   /WIGTOWN   894/00 0056

* Age at death unrecorded on the Index.

And Samuel's death entry at a good age:

1877   CAIRNS   SAMUEL   89   OLD LUCE OR GLENLUCE   /WIGTOWN   894/00 0016

Regards.

I've found out that Sarah Cairns parents were definitely Samuel Cairns and Isabella Brown, although I haven't been able to get any details on them yet.

I've also found that Thomas McCowens parents were John McCowen (master Tailor) and Ann(i)e Lorrimer,  I've searched and searched and can't find a thing.

Can anyone help, please?

Hi Foz

Firstly, regarding Sarah Cairns' parents Samuel and Isabella Brown. A word of caution, even with the names of their parents from their death certs., you are going to have the issue of researching in Ireland where records are much more difficult to source. If you have viewed Samuel and Isabella Brown's death certs. and they contain their parents' names, you might want to try a new post on the Ireland Board here on RootsChat.

In respect of Thomas, did you get the father's name as being John from his DC? I think there may have been some misreporting on his DC of his father's name which I think is likely to be James not John. Remember we have a likely birth entry for Thomas, an actual extract:

THOMAS MCEWEN     Christening:  12 MAY 1822  Old Luce, Wigtown, Scotland
Parents: Father: JAMES MCEWEN    Mother: ANN LATIMORE

I've just looked on IGI, and there is also a marriage banns entry for this couple, also an actual extract:

ANE LATIMORE
Parents: Father: PAUL LATIMORE

Marriages: Spouse: JAMES MCEWEN
Marriage: 28 MAY 1821  Old Luce, Wigtown, Scotland

Children showing to this couple on IGI:

1. THOMAS MCEWEN Christening: 12 MAY 1822 Old Luce, Wigtown, Scotland
2. HELEN MCEWEN Christening: 14 NOV 1824 Old Luce, Wigtown, Scotland
3. ANN MCEWEN Christening: 02 MAR 1828 Old Luce, Wigtown, Scotland
4. MATILDA MCEWEN  Christening: 20 JUN 1830 Old Luce, Wigtown, Scotland
5. JESSIE MCEWEN Christening: 09 OCT 1831 Old Luce, Wigtown, Scotland
6. ELIZABETH MCEWEN Christening: 27 NOV 1836 Old Luce, Wigtown, Scotland
7. JANE MCEWEN Christening: 22 APR 1839 Old Luce, Wigtown, Scotland

I'll have a look in the censuses for father James to check out his occupation.

Regards.

Monica  :)

Not sure if Ann, Thomas's mother, has died or her name has been mistranscribed on the index for 1851 as it now shows as Mary. All the children showing as born in Old Luce:

James McCowen    50, master tailor, b. Ireland
Mary McCowen    48, b. Ireland
Helen McCowen    25
Margaret McCowen 16
Elisabeth McCowen    13
Jean McCowen    11
Sarah McCowen    8

Not sure if our James Snr. is changing wives every 10 years or so 8)

For the 1861 Census, wife's name is now Jane. I can see a verifiable entry for a marriage on IGI:

JAMES MCCOWEN     Marriages: Spouse:  JANE BARBER
Marriage:  25 DEC 1860  Old Luce, Wigtown, Scotland

And the 1861 census entry:

James McCowan    59, tailor, b. Ireland
Jane McCowan    45, b. Glenluce, Wigtonshire
Ellen McCowan    35
Jane McCowan    21
Sarah McCowan    18

Address: Main St, Glenluce, Wigtownshire

Given the dates we are now into, you should be able to access James's DC and verify parents' names.

Oh Monica !

Thanks once again for helping me out.  I felt so pleased that I'd got it all sorted, but
obviously I hadn't !    :-[   :-[

I will spend some time sorting through all the info you gave me, and see what I come up with next !

I'm not looking forward to tracing anybody in Ireland.

I really am very grateful for what you've done.

Your friend will have a brilliant birthday present from you come May, you're doing great  :) I'm trying to help you pack as much in before you venture across the water to Ireland....

The 1851 Census with Mary rather than Ann looks to be a mistrasciption (I was begining to think of James the Tailor as the Don Juan of Old Luce  ::)

I think this is Ann's DC entry on SP:

1857   MCCOWAN   ANN   MCLEAN   LATTIMOR  54   OLD LUCE OR GLENLUCE   /WIGTOWN   894/00 0019

And probably James's entry:

1876   MCCOWEN   JAMES    74   OLD LUCE OR GLENLUCE   /WIGTOWN   894/00 0025

Regards.
