Title: 1841-91 Lookups please Ipswich & Southwold VINYARD, HOGG, SAVAGE
Post by: Colin Y on Sunday 21 November 04 16:17 GMT (UK)
Hello all

Can some kind soul please do me any possible LOOKUPS for the family of Henry & Louisa VINYARD of Ipswich.

I have found them in the 1881 census at Orwell Court some of the family were there and some of their daughters at another married daughters home nearby. Henry was missing. He was a Bargeman sailing Grain. We suspect he was at sea. We have him working on the quay in the 1901 census.

His son Charles born 1872 married Emeline Elizabeth HOGG

We would like to know anything more about them for the remaining family in  Ipswich and area.

The Savage Family are from Orford and were Grocers.

Thanks in anticipation.

Colin

Hi Colin....In future can u please make I request per post. Please make sure u Post as much info as possible on the person u r looking for  re family age where born etc...To log 3 names and every census there is together is really not likely to drum up much action....far too daunting a request...Different people have different resources....If I was to do all this (I couldnt because I dont have all the resourses required) it would take me all week!....Once u get into the earlier censuses they r not indexed and take hours to go through. Ipswich is Huge....You have provided no info on the Hoggs or the Savages at all so will leave that alone and will start with the  Vinyard Family....Perhaps later with more info we can move on from there

here r Henry and Louisa in the 1871 census

Kriss

Brilliant, thanks.

Our surprise was that tho the rest of the family (Louisa et al) were on the 1881 Henry the father was not.

WE have him as a bargeman working for Cranfields and assumed he was at sea. Any idea what happened to the Census regn if you were away from home?

It is possible that Charles was in Southwold or Woodbridge by 1891. he married a Southwold girl who was born in Norwich called Emmeline Elizabeth Hogg.

Anything you can find of them would be greatly appreciated.

Again thanks for the discovery so far. e had no idea he was a Fisherman!

Sorry Colin there is no sign of these Vinyard boys in the 91 census anywhere in England or Wales that I can find.  Ihave tried everything including just christian name Charles born Ipswich from 15 to 20 years of age and there is just nothing even vaguely resembling the name appearing...I had a look at 1901 and c he is Charles Vineyard 26 wife Eve 24 in Kent...I know its them cas her bro Albert 19 is with them but I just cant c hide nor hair of him in 91...perhaps dad has taught them where to hide out from the enumerators...lol....cas they just dont appear to be there....sorry....Kris

The brother who is with them in 1901 is not here...had a look and there is an Albert 6 residing with his sister and hubby William and Eliza Applegate Eliza is 20 if that is him...He seems to be the only Albert who is not residing with his parents for the census

OK checked 1881 and  thats OK they did have a daughter Eliza so that is Albert with his sister in 1891....c Emmeline only 1 here then 14 in 91 and 24 in 1901...Albert is 6 in 91 and 19 in 1901 so this family r not very consistant with age

Hi

Sort of! There has been a 'marital contrtemps' in that family recently and I am letting their family history activity alone a bit... but if you have some new data for me I'd be glad to have it?

Don’t quite understand what you mean by “marital contretemps” in this case?

Anyway, the question where was Henry in the 1881 census?
Henry's full name was Henry Thomas Vinyard (as stated in one of his sons 2nd marriage); hence, I believe the Thomas Vinyard stated in the 1881 census was Henry.  The age matches exactly (40 years), and he only had one other brother, William.  Why was he not with his wife in the 1881 census, but at his mothers (Maria) home address at the Eagle Tavern?  There was a number of offenses Henry committed around the time (noted in the court/police book), would this be the reason, together with the use of Thomas instead of Henry.

Henry Vinyard had 13 children, 6 sons (including a Charles born 1872, marring Emmaline Elizabeth Hogg in Ipswich in 1897) and 7 daughters, all born in Ipswich between 1862 to 1884.  Henry's brother, William had 2 children, again born in Ipswich.

Much more info if required.

Regards

Thats all very interesting and explains it beautifully. Thanks.

The 'family contretemps' is that the husband and wife - our friends  who are related to the Vineyards are currently not together!

Hi ,are you still looking for more info on the Vinyards.I have been researching them for their ggg grandson and found out quite abit about the family, including Henry and Louisa.
Henrys father Charles is known as Wynyard on his birth ,marriage as is Henry on his birth.Charles parents Charles and Sarah also use Wynyard as well as Vinyard.
Henry and Louisa's marriage seems like a rocky one they separate on and off (from newspaper articles) and Henry does seem to like a fight as does Louisa and he is sent to the local gaol numerous times

Hello Littlesis 76, I am directly related to Henry Vinyard. We've also done quite a bit of research of the Vinyard family tree - would love to swap info with you.

Hi I was doing the Vinyards last year for a relative if there's so my head is a bit hazey on them
I do know they were a very interesting bunch esp Henry and spent ages going through the newspapers as there was so much on him.
I am not sure what I could help you with but I am on Ancestry if you would like me to share the tree with you that's fine
Also there is a book you might of read it but it's called Rags and Bone by Frank Grace and it's all about the St Clemence area of Ipswich .
I read it many years ago and after researching it I had to get it again to see if the Vinyards were in there and they were ! Only a mention but no surprise with Henry's character :)

Hi, Thanks for replying, yes if you didn't mind sharing your tree that would be fantastic, thank you very much. You probably need the email address to do that? It's my partner's address: sjonesdesign@yahoo.co.uk

Funnily enough, the book you mentioned arrived today and I've been reading up about my great great grandad Henry (might not want to admit we're related lol). This is what sparked it off again (there's a post on this book in the Facebook group Ipswich Remembers). We've also found lots about Henry and Charles in the newspaper archives. Very interesting to say the least!

Happy to share anything we've found with your relative if they're still interested.

Thanks again re. the family tree, look forward to seeing what you've discovered!

Emma
