Hi.  Just come across your post.  I have just discovered a Helen Darry in my tree, born 1804 in Duns, Berwick, daughter of William Darry and Nelly Cockburn.  I was just about to post a plea myself!!  Any connection?

Hi,

I have quite a few Darries in my tree.

Jean Darrie was born in Edrom 1786 and married Robert Thorburn

Jean's parents were George Darrie 1757 and Jean Martin 1769.

George's parents were Alexander Darrie and Margaret Purves (married about 1749)

Alexander's parents were George Darrie and Agnes Middlemass both born about 1705 in Duns

I have quite a lot of information on Jean's and George's siblings but I've now come to a standstill.

If anyone has anything that could help it would be appreciated.

I have an Isabelle Purves married to William Clazy in Coldstream and I have an Agnes Middlemist or Middlemass married to George Claise in abt. 1750.  William was a son of George and Agnes.  Purves, Clazy, Middlemiss (various spellings) all lived in the same area.

I ansung,

I believe they were Robert Thorburn ca.1736 Coldingham? died 20/11/1816 Coldingham age 79 & Elizabeth Melrose ca.1746 Coldingham? died 10/5/1817 age 70 Coldingham.

But you could check Roberts birth on SP, died 22/8/1848 Coldingham age 63.

James Thorburn died 10/3/1855 Coldingham age 73 & Ann Mosley 22/3/1843 age 53, son George 23/12/1897 age 79.

Am conected with the Thorburn family through a marriage to a David Aitchison, but have not looked up a lot of the Thorburn side.

I have always meant to find out about Allerton as I can't find any place like that in Northumberland. There is an Allerton in Yorkshire. On 'old-maps.co.uk there were places called Allerton in Yorks and Cheshire.

Hi Becky,
Is the place not called Allanton or is there also an Allerton? I had wondered if that could have been where he was born but that is certainly not in Northumberland!

Hi,

It is spelt Allanton and is in the Ordanance Survey map for Kelso &  Coldstream and according too my wife was a small village with one pub, but don't know as yet which district it came under for census.

Comes under Edrom.

The Allerton mystery continues! Unfortunately his brother Robert and [perhaps a brother, William] died before 1855 so there is no record from any other certificate as to where they were born. I wonder if Robert c1737 was a soldier as sometimes families travelled with the regiment and children were baptised in the county where they happened to be at the time.

Hi, just found your notes reference "Darrie"
I have at least 40 from that name on my tree from late 17th century till modern times.
George Darrie (1854) and Anthony (1858) married two Bain sisters, Elizabeth and Jane(1877 & 1876) I think for marriage dates., in Greenlaw & Whitsome respectively.

George and Anthony from Fishwick Farm, Hutton, Berwickshire.

Hi Terri,
The photo is too large to attach. Please don't put your email on this message board. I think once you have posted 3 messages you can send/receive private messages. When you can do this I can get your email address and forward the photo on to you.

Hi Becky,

There is a tiny hamlet in north Northumberland called Alwinton - pronounced "Allanton" - which of course can easily be confused with Allanton in Scotland. My Stephenson ancestors in Roxburghshire and East Lothian came originally from Alwinton and I recently visited the place for the first time, after about 30 years of genealogical research. It's high up in Coquetdale, near Rothbury.

Various relations of mine, surnames Clazie, Clazy & Drummond, were from Allanton; all are recorded in the parish register at Edrom, in the old county of Berwickshire, not Northumberland.  Census listings for Allanton also were under Edrom parish.

Jean Bain was the daughter of Isobel Brown Hopper (1827-1912) and George Bain (1814-1874), and her Sister, Mary Hopper (1849-1891) was my paternal Great Grand Mother, who married a John Alexander GIBSON in 1875 at Eastfield Greenlaw. They had two daughters Jane (1877-1931) and Rachel Ann (1880-1916), but were orphaned in 1891 and farmed out to relatives in Seaton Delaval and Edinburgh respectively
I will also send a PN with direct contact details
