Title: Stockdale Family of East Markham
Post by: XPhile2868 on Thursday 08 February 07 16:11 GMT (UK)
My 6x great grandfather is Benjamin Stockdale, born in East Markham c1752. His wife was Ann (bc1856) and his children included my 5x great grandmother Rebecca (bc1785) and Benjamin (bc1797).

I was wondering if anyone else was related to this family or if anyone knew anything of them.

I don't know if any of the family went to Liverpool at the moment - I only know of the branch that came to Preston.

I also only know two of the children.

I've recently found that they aren't my direct ancestors, but they are related (I though two people were brother and sister when they were actually cousins).

Hi I am also related to the STOCKDALES from East Markham, George Sockdale b 1720, Benjamin Stockdale b 1750 was the 4th youngest of George.

They were famers and mainly had farms in TOP STREET & LOW STREET East Markham.

The Stockdales have a connection with the WALKER family (WALKER HAULAGE) Mary Ellen Stockdale (Ellen) Maried Edward Daniel Walker (Dan)

My Connection is Joseph Stockdale b 1900 East markham, he came to Essex and married Amy Millicent Neville

these are my gt gt grandparents

My wife is a direct descendant 4GGGD of Benjamin Stockdale.I am interested to see that you have the tree back a further generation to East Markham. Her descent is through Rebecca Stockdale b1785 who married William Taylor at East Markham in 1815. Do you have any further information please?

According to what I have found so far, Benjamin and Ann nee Weselby had 9 children between 1778 and 1797, none of them appear to have died as children which if correct is unusual for the period. Do you know either of any further children or of any of the children dying prematurely?

Titch; Where did you find the record of George Stockdale's birth please? It is not on the IGI, and the record of Benjamin's birth in 1752 at East Markham on the IGI was inserted by a member of the LDS, and therefore without a source reference may not be accurate.

HI

I got the record from another family member on ancestry, and as far as I know there are no other children, but this can not be confirmed without goin to Nottinghamshire records office

Thanks Titch, That is the problem with inserted records on the IGI, extracted records (from the parish registers) are usually accurate. If you are within range I know there is a sub office of Nottinghamshire RO at Retford in North Notts.

there are 11 Stockdale gravestones in EM churchyard. There may be others but a large amount of stones are totally unreadable and some have fallen on their faces. Some are fairly recent and so Iam not going to post up on the site, if you want copies get in touch and I can send you the pictures privately. The older ones are George Stockdale d 7th Oct 1889. And his wife Mary. Benjamin d Dec 18 1943 aged 83.And his wife Elizabeth. Charles Henry beloved son of George and Mary Stockdale, this one is very dirty and difficult to read. William Stockdale d feb 10 1976 aged 85 and his wife Jane.

Firstly, get those email addresses off the postings before the moderators do it for you! I am surprised they have lasted this long, the purpose of the personal message is so we can avoid making our email addresses public to the whole world!
My main interests are in the death dates of Benjamin bc1750, together with the detail of his parents and his 9 children. I wonder whether East Markham has been included on the national burial index. Also exactly what is on the parish registers if copies are held at Retford sub record office.
According to the Phillimore Guide the Registers from 1561 to 1949 have been deposited at the record office, so it should be feasible to get back 140 years before the IGI which commences in 1703.

Hi Red and co,

Spent a couple of hrs at retford library today. Here is what i found so far:

The Parish Registers for East markham are from dates 1561-1900 and include births deaths and marriages.
I found Benjamin Stockdale born: December 28th 1750, baptised January 28th 1751 to George and Elisabeth STockdale. Although a bloke in there told me that january 28th would still be counted as 1750 cos of the ecclesiatical calendar. Didnt make sense to me, is it true??
I found some other children:
John born November ?15th (illegible) 1746, baptised 30th December 1746.
Elisabeth born February ?2nd (date obscured after the 2) 1744.
Doesnt sound much for the time i spent! Still, i will go back and have another go, taking a big packed lunch with me. Praps I will make Larkspur come with me to double the effort... The original parish registers are apparently kept at Nottingham archives. The early dates were very hard to read due to terrble writing and poor quality filming praps.
I will have a wander around the graveyard to see what graves i can find.

Hi Sheep, yes very time consuming in the Library, I only usually get there in the school holidays and then my daughters are pestering to leave as they have found their books and probably read them too by this time!! I did drag them round the churchyard and we found 11 stones for Stockdales. If you want pics get in touch personally with your E Mail and I can send them to you. Oh, I also have Rawdings and Otters in my tree.
As to the dates it is the change from the Julien Calendar to the Gregorian Calendar that causes the "date change" if you go on Wiki and put Gregorian Calendar in it explains it all. I think we lost 11 days in 1752.

Post by: Redroger on Thursday 18 March 10 17:38 GMT (UK)
Absolutely true Sheepish, and thanks very much for what you have found. Up to 1751 the year started in April, the tax year still does!, and in order to realign the calendar which had got 11 days out of alignment with the seasons due to a wrong apportionment of leap years 11 days were deducted from Sept? 1750 to correct the calendar. This brought us into line with most of Europe though Russia did not convert until after the revolution, and their church still celebrates its festivals on the old calendar, now around 13 days out. Am about to add your findings to my wife's tree, and will likely be back later. Thanks again.

Great work Sheepish, not bad at all for 4 hours work, but my views may be coloured because I am researching a scarce surname, Luffman, which even now has only approx 550 bearers in the UK. If you find one per session when researching such a name you are doing well, it does have the consolation though of knowing when you find one (s)he is yours.
If the Stockdales were resident there throughout the register period you might get back to near 1561, but expect a gap or at least omissions during the Cromwellian period approx 1650-1660. As a general rule if I find no record of any typefor a family over a 50 year period I assume that have either left the area, or have not yet arrived there.
Don't be tempted to go to Nottingham, though they have the registers there you will only be allowed to see a film or fische again, this is done to protect the original. They are very reluctant to give access to original registers, I know, I've tried with some terrible ones at Lincoln, it;s the fische, film or nothing.
Some places do have transcriptions of registers, if the film is very bad it is worth asking whether the register has been transcribed.

My earliest Taylor is William who married Rebecca at East Markham on 15th Feb 1810. I don't know where he came from. Many years ago I worked with a gentleman named Antcliffe he had been previously employed at Tuxford depot and transferred to Doncaster when Tuxford closed.

I am assuming this is the railway? with you mentioning a depot.
My Great uncle Charles Antcliffe worked on the railways for many years, he died in 1983, aged 89. As far as I know we have no other railway men in the Antcliffe lot.

The baptism of William Taylor (parents William and Rebecca) 6-2-1813 states his father William was a publican in East Markham. Do you know which pub?
There is also a baptism of Mary Taylor 7-3-1802 with parents William and MAUD again father is a publican.
Ok Marriage Askham, William Taylor and Maud Clark 25-5-1801
burial East Markham Maud Taylor 11-4-1808. died 11-4-1808 wife of Wm.Far. ?? farrier maybe??

I didn't realise there were that many Stockdales about......

I've gone as far back as the 1851 census, Low Street, East Markham.  My direct ancestors are George (b1816), Mary (b1827) and John (b1845).

My branch of the family moved to Sheffield and I would love to find out more details.

If anyone out there can give more information or go even further back, that would be fantastic.

Go through this thread carefully. Do you have a family history program installed? If not I suggest free version of Legacy. It is around £20 ($30) to upgrade, so not a bad price. This is an internet download I am referring to. Then I and possibly others can send you information.

Had another try and can't get this website at all. I have done a word document on my Stockdale clan. I am new to this so forgive me if I'm being naive - can I add my word document.

Some information above goes back to 1700, would I have to view parish records for this information and if so, are they in a library or church? The furthest back in time I have found is George Stockdale, born 1816 in East Markham and he is a direct descendant who was a labourer.

I just googled Legacy for Mac, and got the response there is no version currently available, but it is possible to run it under Mac or Linux by using emulations. I think it best if you google this yourself and you will then have a better idea what you can do.
