Title: AVG Free Anti Virus
Post by: DS on Tuesday 13 February 07 13:07 GMT (UK)

Hi

Just a timely reminder that support for AVG Free Anti Virus version 7.1 ceases on 18/02/2007.

Anyone who has not already done so, should download the latest version 7.5 before that date, in order to retain full protection.

Silas

If you get the AVG Control Centre on screen and click on "Information" at the top, then on "About", it will tell you the version number.

If it is version 7.5.441 you will be alright. If it says 7.1.something you need to download the new version

The withdrawal of support for the earlier version means that automatic updates will not be provided for it (even though it may still be set to receive them). The older version will still operate but only with an out of date database of threats.

Silas

Although you may be getting updates automatically the upgrade is slightly different and requires downloading the installation program.

However, check which version you are running by opening the control center for the program going to "information" in the menu bar and then "about AVG" if this shows you running version 7.5 you need take no action - if you are running version 7.1 this is the version which will no longer be supported after 18th february and you should upgrade by downloading and running version 7.5.

Also, when you download 7.5 you will get a month of automatic updates, after that you'll have to do it manually.

You can set the time for your machine to check for updates and this should ensure that its done automatically, even well after the first month

That's interesting to know, I was under the impression that that feature would disappear after a month of use.

Thanks.

Hi Silas,

An aborted download usually means a busy server, which is doubtless the case with AVG at the moment.  Keep trying - you'll get there.

If anyone misses out on AVG Free Anti-Virus, Avast is always worth looking at....I have tried everything from Norton to Norman, Bullguard to Bull...t, and McAfee (ugh)......Avast has done the job perfectly.

I also run Prevx as well, although it does slow my smaller older PC a bit.

If my memory serves me right, you will only get automatic downloads
if you purchase the "PRO" version. Just check the website to make sure.

Yet again, just to let you know that you DO get automatic downloads (for 3 years in my case - probably forever) of AVG FREE!

Sometimes, when there is a new version (eg 7 over 6), they make it look as if you need to pay, by making that bit of the screen/message prominent, but you can find AVG free quite easily by reading the message/site carefully.

So my free downloads come daily - they just install themselves and show me a little box to say they have done it.  If there is a new VERSION you will be told to download it.  As we all should have done by yesterday.

Here is where you can read about it and do the business.

http://www.avgfree.co.uk/doc/1

My version is now 7.5.441

For home users there is no need to buy AVG pro.

Whichever antivirus you use, make sure you get it to update continuously - this way you keep abreast of the latest beasties.

Just another little point.......just because the deadline is the 18th, it doesn't mean that you will no longer be able to obtain AVG 7.5 Free after that date.....it just means that AVG v7.1 won't be supported..... ;D

Also, it's only FREE for home use....if it's for business purposes, you pay...

Hi All
is there any other way to download the newer version of AVG.Rather than have to wait 1 hour forty five minits. I have another hour and a half to go:(  and am having to do it in stages.Rather than go in and out of the room moving the mouse to keep the screen up. I had wondered why my email scanner wasn't working,i don't get updates. I started to download last night but stopped it when i saw how long it was going to take :o

Are you on dial-up or broadband?

It takes a couple of minutes on broadband.  I suspect even on dial-up it should be very much faster.  Maybe some error?

Non that i know of,it's really weird trying to downlad it.I had never had any anti virus on my P.c till a few months ago and i have had a computer for years.I remember when i downloaded AVG it took a long, long time to download.
I now get a very large notice on startup every time telling me to upgrade. So i do,Application 18.2mb  press save Approximate  Download time starts at 13 minits then rises to 1 and a half hours.Last night i tried a differend download the estimated download went up to nearly 3 hours :o
I have just tried again on the get update on AVG Program that now says 1 hour and? Looks like i am stuck :-\

Hi Celia

I have just (as an experiment) downloaded another copy and it took approx 49 seconds (on broadband).

I have the file on my desktop at the moment. If you wish I can copy it onto a CD for you and post it tomorrow.

If you would like me to do so, please send me a PM with your address.

I was just about to suggest doing that for Celia myself, it's the easiest way to do it......

If anyone else is struggling I'd also be happy to volunteer.....it's no problem... ;D

I can remember the good old days of D/Up....what a joy it was to go to bed and hope that a 25mb download would be there in the morning.. ;D ;D

Celia.

Just reading this thread, and have a suggestion!

Have You tried doing an Online Speedtest, to Check Your Connection?

Even those of Us on BB tend to get slowdowns (Ocassionally!). ::) ;)
Title: Re: AVG Free Anti Virus
Post by: Michael72. on Sunday 25 February 07 21:21 GMT (UK)

Once you have AVG installed...if you check for updates every couple of days, they will only take a few minutes to download....

You could also maybe download this (it's only 669kbs)... ;D ;D

       http://www.snapfiles.com/get/startupinspector.html

It's a very easy programme to use and it may just solve your slowdown prob by letting you stop stuff in your 'Startup' that may be slowing you down, every little helps.

You don't need any computer skills to use it either, it has little icons that tell you what's good and what ain't.......you just click 'CONSULT' and take it from there.....

Hi Michael
i have got AVG installed, i think i have checked for updates
i get a little long window on the screen it has  coloured squares on it.And very very slowly each square gets covered till the last one has gone.very boring waiting for it to finish ::) I  nearly always fix my own techy problems but AVG has got me stumped :-\ I did have a look at start up but there isn't anything to affect downloads. My Program is XP Professional it take a lot longer than my old p.c to shut down and i still don't know why. I am going to dive into the machine tomorrow and find Mr Slow Down ;D

I would like to have the AVG Spyware, - here's the daft bit ::) after clicking on the download now Windows asks if i want to 'run' or 'save'  :-[ which is it please?

Title: Re: AVG Free Anti Virus
Post by: tomkin on Monday 26 February 07 17:53 GMT (UK)
Hi Suey,
That's not daft lass.  If you click on Run then windows will open the file
immediately.  If the file has a virus you will install that as well.  Only click run if
you trust the site. ( or course you will be safe in this instance because AVG will
make sure that their site is protected from infection )
Normally when you download a file you should save it to a folder such
as downloads or whatever name you want to call it. When the download is complete
then go to the folder find the downloaded file and  RIGHT click on it. A menu will appear
and you can select your Anti virus programme to run a check on it. It only takes a few seconds. this will tell you if a virus is present in the file. If there is then DO NOT open it.
Do the same with the Anti Spyware programme.

I do this for all files that I download ( even AVG)    If its clean then double left click and
the file will open and install. Just get into the habit

    Any doubts then please scream,
Tomkin ;D ;D ;D
