Title: Removal orders
Post by: Burto on Thursday 15 February 07 15:38 GMT (UK)
Hi,
I'm trying to work out whether some of my ancestors were Romany or not. My GGGGrandfather, Joseph Swift was a musician/professor of the violin on various census, and when I tried to trace his mother, I couldn't find her. He was "baseborn" and my guess is his mother was a widow who had him out of marriage second time round as there is a record of an Ann Swift who was married to a Thomas in the correct area a few years before Joseph's birth or she was just a young girl part of a family who never baptised her. Anyway both possible families Ann could have been part of were removed from various places, were sent to Shepshed, then were removed a few years later.
Was it common for people of Romany descent to be "removed" from parishes?
Thanks.

I think anyone who was considered to be a 'burden on the parish' could be removed.
