Title: What to do next??
Post by: sunflower on Saturday 17 February 07 14:55 GMT (UK)
Hi

This may be like looking for a needle in a haystack, but here goes

Gt.Gt. Grandfather Martin Ryan (born 1829) married Bridget Swift (born 1834) in Leicester in 1853. Martin's father was Edward Ryan deceased and Bridgets father was James Swift.  Both give their birth place as Galway in later censuses.  They don't seem to be in the 1851 census so assume they arrived in England between 1851 & 1853.  I'm not sure where to go from here. Is the 1851 census for Galway available to search and are there any passenger list anywhere?

Thanks

Carol

Hello Carol,

Dr Jane Lyons' 'From Ireland' © genealogy web site mentions that there are some 1851 Census Fragments for Loughrea town which are held in the National Archives of Ireland. The Reference number is M 150. Other than those records there are  Griffiths Valuations for Co. Galway  (http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php) which took place in 1855. The Valuations are known as Census Substitutes and only show the head of household. There's one James Swift listed ... he had property at Castletown, Kiltartan, Galway. I don't know if it's any help but there were three Ryan families at Kiltartan.

There are no passenger lists for journeys from Ireland to England.
