I'm not sure but I think St Helens registered in Prescot at the time?
In which case this is marriage:
Dec 1874 Prescot 8b 973
John Gaskell
3 possible Mary's on the same page: Mary Johnson, Mary Lightfoot or Mary Whitfield*
*LancashireBMD tells us the bride is Mary Whitfield. Marriage at Prescot St Mary's. Not sure if it's a possible ...
Your best bet would be to obtain a birth certificate for one of the children. It would give you Mary's maiden name !

Hi
Thanks so much for looking at this for me
I came up with the same as you but could not convince myself even with the location an repetitive names of children that Joseph & John were the same people.
but as you came up with the same I'm a little more convinced we have the same family.
Can anyone throw light as to the name change?
Just read your last message great suggestion as I have already ordered 1 wrong marriage Cert I should have thought of a Birth Cert.
Many thanks for your time as they say a fresh pair of eyes often helps.

It wasn't necessarily a name change - perhaps just an enumerator's mistake. I'm very sure they're the same family anyway :)
