Hello all: This might be old news to some, but I thought this New York Times article, published today, might interest fellow Rootschatters on the far side of the water (from where I sit). The story looks at recent research (and attendant speculation) showing closer genetic similarities among the English, the Irish, the Scots, and the Welsh than is generally believed.

I must say that the Irish and Scottish (Celtic) parts of me feel very different to the English part - but perhaps I'm kidding myself! ;D ;D ::) 8) 8)

Well that,s not exactly new new,s,but I guess it filled an editorial layout gap !
The Welsh though,the Cornish,and Irish,have had a different blood infusion not all of it from the European side.
Ireland has Hellenic influence,s.Wale,s being one of the favorite raiding spot,s for the Irish,probably the same.
Cornwall had it,s Phoenician and Corsair visitor,s as well as the nearer French.
Scotland is of course so close to Ireland that two way traffic would be inevitable,not discounting of course the later Mercenarie,s of the Roman occupation,interbreeding!

Hi MarieC and Goggy: Just missed catching you two very early in the morning your time online. I take scientific studies like this one with a grain of salt. There is some logic to what the geneticists are saying, though, about the numbers of interlopers who came from various place to various places. Smaller numbers of invaders coming means less genetic change.
I'm English, Scottish, and Italian, as well as American. You can imagine how I feel about the various cultures that make up me...
By the way MarieC, I notice you have Bentleys in Yorkshire at the bottom of your post. I stumbled across the folowing site and bookmarked it even though I don't have Bentleys in my ancestry--I've never even ridden in a Bentley! A good read John. Interesting that the theory somewhat follows the lines of Irish legends which infer that Ireland was inhabited by Ionians then by Iberians.

At least the article was useful in pointing out that the numbers of invaders in any given invasion mightn't have been as large as we tend to think! Whether or not this geneticist is right, it is definitely food for thought!
John - thank you very much for that Bentley website, and for pm-ing me about it! I have been there and had a quick look - very interesting! I'm attempting to find links to Bentleys in Yorkshire from the ones I know of in London, and am completely stuck at present. I will contact the site owner with details of my Bentleys, and we'll see if anything transpires from there! Hopefully, the site may help others as well.

Fascinating stuff! If anyone wants to go a little further into DNA based genealogy I can recommend "Blood of the Isles" by Bryan Sykes. The author is the academic who founded Oxford Ancestors whose services have been discussed previously on Rootschat.
Although he pretty well sticks to the science his book helps to knock on the head some of the tribalistic nonsense that we sometimes get in the English speaking world.

refering to the english speaking world, has anyone read "the history of britain revealed" by m.j. harper? who claims that all european languages as descended from english. its a fascinating read :)
