On her marriage cert in 1887 my g.grandmother gave her address as Springfield House, Edgeley. I have found it on Old -maps and it seems quite a substantial place. Does anyone with local knowledge know anything about this house - was it a private house or as we would say these days "a house of multiple occupation"? I have no doubt that Louisa was employed in some capacity.

Hi Fairlane
if you can give me your G.Grandmothers name, i might be able to find her in the directories. Not sure if i will find anything in the books about the type of house but you never know.

Hi Celia
Thanks for your reply. My g.grandmother was Louisa Humpherson (from Shropshire) - I know she would have been employed in some capacity at Springfield House rather than a houseowner. I have been trawling through the 1881 census enumeration districts to try and find the occupants but it's never ending! I'd be grateful for any help you can offer.
Best wishes, Fairlane

I will see what i can do ;)

Hi Fairlane
I cant get to the library till tomorrow Saturday, and Cheshire isn't very well covered on the historical directories. I did however find a snippit of info in the 1874 one.I, like you had thought it was probably the house of a landowner.Where the Esq's lived. ;D
1874. Alsager.
Joseph Yeardley, ESQ Springfield House
Mr George Heamersley Springfield House
I did a search using springfield but it is also a place name & surename. At least we now know what we are looking for ;D

Hi Fairlane :)
Think I may have found your house, it was in the 1891 and 1901 owned and occupied by a family named Colles.
Mr Percy Collis was a manufacturer of billiard tables and must have been quite successful.
His wife Mary was a school teacher and once their family had grown up they moved from Cheadle to the larger Springfield House in Edgley and opened a it as a private girls school with in 1891 18 teenage girls and 7 teachers plus several servants and governesses.
One of servants (domestic cook) in 1891 was a Julia Humperson aged 29 single and from Rockwardine in Shropshire, so maybe a relation to your Louisa.
The 1891 census ref. is RG12-2801-Folio25 - Page43
It is indexed in the Ancestry index 1881 and 1901 as Percy Colles, and in 1891 as Percy Collies.
Hope this is what your looking for

Peter and Celia,
What can I say? A brilliant result - I don't know how you do it. Julia was Louisa's older sister. My searching obviously needs a lot of refining. Thanks to you both.

Hello,
I am a senior from Nova Scotia, Canada. I have just joined this site and all is new to me. Louisa Humpherson is my great aunt and is a sister of my grandmother Julia (Humpherson) Leese. My grandmother as a young woman worked at "Springfield House" when it was a girls' s school. My grandmother was house mother. Great aunt Louisa was married to James Edwards, children were Jessie, Alice, Walter and Mary. Mary was a very close 1st cousin of my mother's and she was married to Wilfred Henshall. I can supply more information if you contact me. 0Doris)

Doris,
The James Edwards you mention is a brother to my husband's grandfather George Edwards.
Sending PM.

Baudoux has probably come up with Fairlains post when she has been doing a search. That happend a few weeks ago with me.I got a email via another website from a lady who is my children's cousin. She saw an old post of mine on wherever.we cant make contact with each other i have sent her loads of emails via the website but no joy yet.I asked her to join rootschat because it's one of few that allows you to contact your new rellies. If you type in a name from your tree it brings up anything with that name on.Including posts from rootschat. Most have to join Rooschat to make contact. Most of them stay with it :)
Celia

Do you mean type a name of someone in my tree on Google? If not, where?
Liz
-
Yes thats right liz. my cousin must have typed out some names on google that were on my post.so thats how she found it.I have tried it a few times myself over the years but it never happens for me :-\

The only name I've tried is my missing g.grandad. As far as I know he only had 3 children, one was my gran and the other 2 didn't have any offspring, so not surprisingly, I've not had any luck.
No point googling his wife's name, as I am already in contact with a descendant from her first marriage and she hasn't any info on him either, nor do her parents and parents' cousins, who were friendly with one of g.grandad's sons.

I have sent a message previously. Don't know as I did it correctly since I am a new member.
Regarding Springfield House and Louisa Humpherson. Louisa was a sister to my grandmother Julia (Humpherson) Leese. Grandmother, Julia worked as a young woman at Springfield House, when it was a girls' school and my grandmother was house-mother. Louisa and Julia were daughters of Thomas & Mary (Hotchkiss) Humpherson. Other members of the family were: Daniel, married to Sarah Deakin; Emily, married to John Leese; (1st. Alice, died as a child; Amelia married to John Harris: Mary Elizabeth married to Joseph Hayward; 2nd Alice married to Joseph Dyson; John T.; Aaron. Great Aunt Louisa married James Edwards. Two of their children( a boy and a girl) died at a young age, then there were Alice, Jessie, Walter and Mary. Mary married Wilfred Henshall. I don't know if my previous message has reached the right party because of me not really knowing how the Site worked, but I look forward to a contact.
Regards,
Doris

Hello Doris
Delighted to hear from you. I have sent two private messages - one on Thursday and one today. On the Home page of Rootschat if you click on the "you have x messages" at the top right hand part of the page you should be able to see them. If you have any problem just post on here again and I'm sure some more experienced Rootschatter than I can help.
My grandfather was Walter Edwards and I look forward to exchanging family news with you.
Best wishes, Fairlane

Fairlane,
Have I made a connection? Please understand I am an old but "young old" senior. I have just joined this Site and saw Springfield House and the mention of Louisa Humpherson. I was more than excited and to be truthful, I didn't have a clue who I was contacting.
Louisa and my grandmother, Julia are sisters. My grandmother, Julia (Humpherson) Leese worked as a young woman at "Springfield House" when it was a school for girls. Granny was house-mother. Granny Leese was married in 1896 so it would be prior to 1896.
I have heard from Eileen, and possibly that is who I contacted first.
I will give you my e-mail if you would like the personal touch

Please use @ instead of (at) if mailing

My cover is blown! Eileen is Fairlane and Doris/Baudoux and I are happily exchanging lots of info thanks to Rootschat.

Hi Doris,
I don't know if you will receive this reply to your post because you posted it in 2007. I have just started researching my family and joined this group a couple of days ago.
Your grandmother Julia and my great grandmother Amelia Humpherson were sisters. She married John Harris and their son Isaac Harris was my grandfather. I remember when I was a child my mother mentioned that I had relatives in Nova Scotia but she didn't know any details.
I was excited to read the details of my ancestors lives in your posts. What an amazing coincidence to find a branch of my family through the internet. I look forward to reading more of your posts.
Best Wishes,
Jan

Hi Jan,
Loved to see your posting. Will be in touch further. My grandmother, Julia (Humpherson) Leese was a sister of Amelia (Humpherson) Harris.

Hi Jan,
I am a senior who resides in Nova Scotia. I have been involved in genealogy for a goodly number of years. I was excited when I read your posting. I am not all that good at the computer. I am wondering how we could get e-mails to one another. I have found RootsChat very very helpful. In fact I found a cousin who resides in Wales. Her Great Grandmother Louisa is also a sister of Julia and Amelia. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Hi Doris,
I can send you my email address in a personal message, but I need to post 3 times on the board before I am allowed to do that. Okay this is my second post. One more to go.
