I am trying to trace descendants of two members of the McLean family who emigrated to the US in the early 1900s.
Matilda McLean - single - aged 17 of Castlebar sailed on the ss. Magestic from Queenstown (Cobh Co. Cork) and arrived in New York on 3rd April 1902
Matilda returned to Ireland at some stage because there is a second record of her travelling to the US - this time as a "non immigrant alien" when she sailed on the ss Etruria from Queenstown arriving on 16 th Sept 1908.. Her address was given as 343 w 45 street, New York and her occupation was Stenographer.
Martha E. McLean aged 17 sailed on the ss Germanic which sailed from Queenstown (Cobh Co. Cork) and arrived in New York on 25th May 1900. She was going to her cousin Mearson(?) 36 (or 56) Walnut Street, Oneonta, New York
There is a second record of Martha arriving at New York on 25th August 1909 aboard the ss Caronia which sailed from Queenstown. The ship's manifest shows that she had already been in US from 1900 to 1909 and that she was visiting her sister Matilda Hol(y)inger of 742, St Nicholas Avenue, New York.
Any help or information woudl be very welcome

Many thanks for your speedy reply.
I've got a summary of the 1901 Census which shows that detail but again thanks for the offer of the info

Your welcome John, have you tried the church in the parish the children were born to see if they have any records.

I know where the parents were married - Turlough Presbyterian Church in Co. Mayo abt 1880-1882 and the area where I think the home farm was - Capparanny in Co. Mayo.
At some stage, I'll get there and see what I can find. It's the US side that interests me - where did the sisters finish up ?

Hi John:
Looks like Martha took over Matilda's place on 45th street.
In 1910 census it shows:
343 West 45th street, Manhattan
Martha E. McLean Lodger, single, 27, Born ireland, To US in 1900 stenographer in Broker's office
Very similar to Matilda but I double checked it.

Hello,
I am looking for information on their father Joseph McLean's mother and father.
I am a descendant of Martha and Matilda's brother William. I am traveling to Ireland in January, 2018 and am hoping to locate any family that might still be there, even though I realize that most had immigrated to the US.
Any information is appreciated.
Thank you

Could Martha and Eliza be the same person!

Willie 08
Robert Mclean died 21st Sept 1960 at the mental hospital Castlebar, where he had been a patient for some months.
His wife Maria McLean died in tragic circumstances on the 10th June 1960 at her home in Capparanny, there were no family.
-
Ah poor Maria
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1960/04341/4122743.pdf
The hospital must not have know she had died earlier the same year.
-
James Mclean b 1882
Church record for Martha Elizabeth is April 1883, the Civil record is listed as Elizabeth in May 1883 so most likely the same person.
-
Such great information and a willingness to contribute. Thank you.
I've found that Joseph and Susan (Beckett) McLean had 9 children. The youngest passed away at age 2.
The 9 were recorded as:
William - 1880
Eliza - 1883 ( likely Elizabeth)
Matilda - 1885
Joseph- 1887
John- 1889
David- 1891
Robert Andrew- 1893
Arthur- 1899
I am a descendant of William. I am most interested in going back further to find out who Joseph senior's parents are and where he was born in 1836. I'm also interested in finding out more about Joseph senior's wife Susan Beckett. Where she was born ( approx 1856) and where and who her parents were.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Turlough Parish/Dist
Marriage 12 Mar 1850
James Beckett Elizabeth McAdam
Miller Farmer age 24 Address Ballyguin
Address Mohina
Father Isaac Beckett Father James McAdam
Miller Farmer Miller Farmer
Looks like James Beckett moved to his wifes Townland of Ballyguin, although both a William Beckett and a James McAdam appear in the Griffiths Val Lists in Ballyguin.
Mohina will actually be the Townland of Moyhenna, Kildacommogh, listed in Griffiths is Isaac Beckett.

Quote from another thread.... Ballyguin/Turlough/Castlebar/Mohina
Beckett was my maiden name too, but we were RC not Church of Ireland. However I checked it up for some of these Becketts on their request.
The Becketts owned 3 mills in the area, and the ruins of one still stand near Parke. Most lived in the Turlough area, but there were some in Spencer Street in Castlebar and a branch in Ballina, the last of who passed away approx 4 years ago. - Frank Beckett. In Ballina there are still some areas named after Becketts as they had a big business in the centre of town - Isacc Becketts.

Thank you all fir the additional information. Greatly appreciated. I feel one step closer!
Contributer 'Owenewee', you have provided information that Joseph sr's father's name was William. Do you know Joseph's mother's name? Where dud you find William's information?
There is more information on Beckett for sure. Thank you for providing Susan Beckett's parents names and additional information.
I hope to find out if Joseph sr ( son of William and x) had any siblings? That might be a thread that could lead me to hopefully a McLean relative in Ireland.
Any other information is appreciated.

From the Rootsireland.ie subscription site, the marriage of Joseph Mclean and Susan Beckett in 1879 shows the fathers name of both Joseph and Susan. It is not usual that the mother's name appears, although sometimes you can be lucky and the Church Record form has a space for mother name.
Joseph appears to have been a lot older than Susan, 1901 shows him 65yrs, his birth would be around 1835c I cant locate any birth record or for other siblings.
I found a note in Irish Newspaper Sept 1954 Birtie McLean from USA visited his uncle Bob Mclean of Capparany.
Another find was Bobs family originally came from Scotland but had lived in Turlough for several generations.
