Hi,

This is an old post but I have a Kent Sarah Baily who married into the Romany Friend family, her father was my paternal 4th great grandfather James Bailey, Kent (1770-).

I also have a match to Scottish Traveller folk which I wonder if it came down with my Baileys before they settled in Kent, although this is just a guess.

Any information on Romany Baileys of Kent would be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks.

Thanks,

Oscar's father comes from Plymouth, Devon, England - the family seems to migrate up to Kent, then to Scotland.

Oscar's birth entry on the GRO site gives his mother's maiden name as SOUTAR:

Mother's Maiden Surname: SOUTAR
BAILEY, OSCAR  SAREL
GRO Reference: 1867  D Quarter in ELHAM  Volume 02A  Page 840

You need to check was his aunt Sara's maiden name was. Should be Soutar if relationship of nephew is correct.

Oscar's marriage or death registration should include full details on his parents and help you confirm their names.

Some researchers show his parents as Sarel Eathorne Bailey and Margaret Soutar. Family 1871 census entry here www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VF8B-CDW  Margaret Soutar Bailey showing as born in the Isle of Man so no clues there to the Munro couple in Glasgow where Oscar is living in 1891.

I am wondering why there would be a death notice for Oscar in South Africa? www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C91W-L931-2?i=69&cc=2517051 He was a stationer (a successful one it seems going by the size of his estate at death). I wonder if he had business interests in SA?

Oscar in Scotland by 1881 where he shows as boarding with John Lyal and wife Agnes in Glasgow.

This couple that Oscar was boarding with in 1881, they look to have left for the US and made their life there. Interestingly, John Lyal has the middle name of SOUTAR (like Oscar's mother Margaret...some connection or co-incidence?).

John Soutar Lyal's Find a Grave entry here www.findagrave.com/memorial/61451206/john-soutar-lyall

With the Monros, a Sarah Soutar/Monro died in 1925 at the age of 78 in West Kilbride. If the correct entry, this will help you to confirm her parents' name.

There is a possible birth entry from the Parish Register indexed here www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYFH-5QP

Just found the confirmation of the connection for Oscar with Sarah.

The 1871 census entry for Margaret Soutar Bailey showed her as born on the Isle of Man. The Soutar family look to have moved about as father John was a lighthouse keeper and these types of jobs did require mobility.

From 1851:

John Soutar 51 Principal Light Keeper
Jane Soutar 45
Isabella Soutar 19
Jane Soutar 11
Margaret Soutar 9
Elizabeth Soutar 6
Sarah Soutar 4
William Middlemiss 55

Address: Buchanness St House

John Soutar looks to have died between censuses. The family in 1861 www.freecen.org.uk/search_records/59026b61e9379091b1dd3e20/sarah-soutar-1861-aberdeenshire-aberdeen-1847-?locale=en

Thank you.

I have a Margaret Collison Soutar
1862–1923
BIRTH 12 JUL 1862 • Dundee, Forfarshire
DEATH 22 JAN 1923 • 125 Perth Road, Dundee, Angus, Scotland.

In the tree where I found her is the Bailey surname, but nothing to suggest how Soutar & Bailey may be connected.

Who is this Margaret, kr236rk?

Not connected to Oscar. Oscar born in England in 1868, six years after this Margaret from Dundee was born. You need to look for a marriage between Margaret Soutar and Sarel Eathorne Bailey. Could have been in England or Scotland.

From what we have, Margaret Soutar was at home with family in 1861 in Aberdeenshire and then in England, married and with two young children (including Oscar) by the time of the 1871 census.

The marriage:

Margaret Soutar and Sarel E Bailey
3rd Qrt 1866
Vol 3a pg 136
in Brentford, Middlesex

Can I ask, how are you connected to Oscar Bailey? Are you descended from one of his children?

Thanks, I don't know that I am descended from this particular family, Monica.

I have a Kentish Sarah Baily who married into the Romany Friend family, her father was my paternal 4th great grandfather James Bailey, Kent (1770-).

I also have a match to Scottish Traveller folk, so I wonder if my Baileys were Scots before they settled in Kent?

Any information on Romany Baileys of Kent would also be greatly appreciated.

Best regards.

Have you looked at websites like this http://rtfhs.org.uk/ to see if anything shows on the Baileys in Kent line?

I am sure you have also gone through the board here on RC www.rootschat.com/forum/travellers/
