Title: Langwith & cotton mill.
Post by: Snorbins on Friday 09 March 07 16:37 GMT (UK)
Does anyone know of any articles/publication on the cotton mill at Langwith. In 1832 there was cotton merchants named Henry and Charles Hollins.
All directions appreciated.

Hi
There is a bit about the mill at Langwith. If you enter Langwith  +"cotton mill" +Hollins in Yahoo search and look at the item about the Portland estate papers.

Thanks for that Eric, the papers are intersting that there are two instances of cotton mills being in the area. One of which was leased to Hollins in 1784 & 1811 and a second that may have been built in 1787 and then destroyed by fire in 1792.
The one leased to Hollins had a number of cottages attached and would most probably have been workers accomodation.
Now i need some of the history.

I think that the Hollins' factory moved to Pleasley Vale and became the makers of the famous 'Viyella' brand. the family lived in Mansfield.

Is anyone aware of any Ledgers from the cotton mill which would have been pre 1842? The census shines a light on the year but trying to back is the difficulty.
Thanks.

Hi,

Might be worth contacting the archivist at Welbeck Estate, Worksop Notts.

Kind regards,
