Title: Balinakill House near Glenealy
Post by: suileabhain on Sunday 11 March 07 01:47 GMT (UK)
Can anyone tell me anything about the history of Balinakill House located between Glenealy and Rathdrum? I believe my grandmother lived there from 1895 until 1902. Her father was Edward Sullivan and the story is that the Sullivan family lived in the house, which is on the estate of someone else (Fitzmaurice?), and raised sheep and Angus beef. My grandmother referred to it as a "caretaker's house."

Hi
I have Sullivans from the Avoca area of County Wicklow and quite probably other areas. Bridget Sullivan married John Niles at Wicklow 1847. Her dad was patrick Sullivan and the sponsor of her first child was Susan Sullivan.
Any connection?

Carol

I wonder in which Ballinakill townland Ballinakill House was located. There are two such townlands in the county.

1. Ballinakill   319 Wicklow Arklow Kilbride Rathdrum Leinster
2. Ballinakill   826 Wicklow Newcastle Kilcommon Rathdrum Leinster

We have at least 2 letters in our family files from Lucy Allison SULLIVAN in Ireland at Balinakill House (posted from Glenealy) to her sister Armillie Florence Allison MCLEAN in Fruitland, Stevens County WA.  The 1901 letter I have mentions Mrs. Ellis, the Lord's wife, as being ill. She refers to her husband as Ned, and mentions their children Clem, Mark and Pearl (an Allison family name). Also mentions Ned's cousin Meta Locke's recent marriage to an Englishman, as well as recents visit by Kitty, John, and Violet.

The 1901 Census in Ireland shows the Sullivan family in Ballinakill (house number 5): http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Wicklow/Rathdrum/Ballinakill/1816569/
They subsequently moved back to Stevens County and Edward died in 1912. He is buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Hunters: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=56993592

Hi Gheebuttersnaps,

The letters you have were written by my great grandmother. Her daughter Clem(entina) was my grandmother. Is it possible you might scan the letters and email them to me? I would so like to see them.

I know all the names except Meta Locke which would probably be a productive lead for further research.

How are you related?

Clementina married a Newbill in Fruitland, Stevens County, WA and I've been to the cemetery there many times. In fact, there will be a Newbill family reunion there next Memorial Day and I'm trying to get as much information together for that as I can regarding the Newbills, Sullivans, and Allisons.

My great grandparents William Bestal of Ballinakill Avoca married Margaret Corcoran on 2nd July 1888. Margaret’s address was  Bariniskey, witnesses John & Mary Sullivan.

I know the above info isn’t probably much help but posting because Ballinakill and Sullivan mentioned
