Title: BUDD family in Westmill, Buntingford
Post by: Londoner on Friday 26 November 04 10:04 GMT (UK)
Could anyone help me with some information about the BUDD family at the end of the 19th Century?

I’ve got as far back as my great great grandparents, George and Sarah Budd, who were aged 53 and 40 at the time of the 1901 census. At this time they were living at in the Hertfordshire village of Westmill (nr. Buntingford).

George was working as a gardener at Coles Park (next to Knights Hill) and was born in Silchester (Hampshire) while Sarah was born in Tupsley (Herefordshire).

Also shown on the census as being at 15 Knights Hill are George’s unmarried sister Mary (48, a domestic cook) and four of George and Sarah’s children. William (23, coachman), Ernest (12), Charles (11) and Robert (1).

A fifth of the Budd children, Anni (21) was at the nearby Rectory on the night of the census, where she worked as a maid. I think they may have had a sixth child, called Mary, who I can't find on the 1901 census. I also think George may have had a sister called Christian who was married by 1901.

I would be grateful for any further information about the family but in particular:
- confirmation (maybe from an earlier census) that there was a sixth child, Mary and when she was born
- confirmation that George had a sister called Christian
- confirmation that George married only once ie: that Sarah was his wife when William was born c.1878 (despite the age Sarah would have been at this time)
- when the family arrived in Westmill (I have no idea whether it was before or after Geroge and Sarah married) which was before c1878 whan William was born

Any / all information very gratefully received.

Welcome Londoner :)

This looks like your family in 1891, still living at Westmill, though it looks as though the Sarah that you found in 1901 could be a second wife.  I will check the earlier censuses and BVRI and get back to you.

Rick

Many thanks - really appreciate your help.

Certainly looks as if there may have been two wives, both called Sarah. Even if there was a mistake about Sarah's age in the 1901 census, the one in the 1891 census would have been 51 by the time the last son, Robert Budd, was born - which seems unlikely. The eldest son, Sidney, is news to me.

The daughter I can't find in the 1901 census may have been called 'Mary Christian Budd' or 'Christian Mary Budd'. Christian is a female family name which was used for at least four generations. Could the 'Christine' you found actually be 'Christian'?

thanks!

Hello again Londoner.

The name is not clear and could indeed be Christian!

This is the family in 1881 from the online LDS census. http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp

Many thanks

That's really useful

Incidentally, the person I think is George's sister was born in Hanworth Middlesex - surely not just a coincidence?!

Hi and hope you're still looking or perhaps have found this info already! If not  have info on Sarah Anne Budd married to George Budd that may help.  She died of stomach cancer 21 May 1896 so Robert is definitely not her offspring. She was born Sarah Anne Horne, 12 Dec 1849 in Hanworth, Middlesex. Her parents were Stephen Horne and Susannah Fowkes: her sibs were Elizabeth 1844 (married Wm Tiling), Christian 1848 (married George Hatch), Walter 1851 - my connection to the family - married Ellen Budd, and Phoebe 1857 (married George Dorrell)

George Budd's sibs were: Jane 1848 (married Henry Prior),  Ellen 1849 (married Walter Horne), Mary 1850, Ann 1853, Caroline 1855, Thomas 1861 (married Agnes Watson), Fanny 1863 (married Thomas West)

And, yes, there were two Horne/Budd marriages. Brother marrying sister and vice versa.

I am stuck at finding the parents of Amy Stanley (George Budd's maternal grandmother). His mother was Ann Buckland, daughter of George Buckland and Amy Stanley. Should you ever get this info I'd appreciate a heads up. Thx.

Hi

I am looking into my family and I believe Sidney might be my great grandfather, I know you’re looking a little further back but I was wondering if you could help me make the connection. Sidney Henry Haywood Budd known to live in Dulwich signed my grandparents marriage certificate in 1960.
