Unable to find any info on the LOCKE-WATERS family in South Australia after the birth of their fourth child in 1898. Have searched BDM's in WA, NSW and Vic.
Found a LOCHE-WATERS in the white pages in Tasmania so bearing in mind there was only a son and three daughters I am pinning my hopes on this family being connected.
I am particularly keen to find the place and dates of death of
Henry Archer LOCKE-WATERS b. 1862 married 1892 Mary Jane WARD b. 1866.
Any info on their children would be a bonus.
Chn.
Muriel LOCKE-WATERS 1893 m. Frank HARRIS
Jocelyn Isobel LOCKE-WATERS b.1894 m. 1 Arthur CLIFTON 2. Frank BERESFORD
Dorothy LOCKE-WATERS b. 1896 m. Harold DAVIS
John Evelyn Archer LOCKE-WATERS b. 1898
Perhaps they moved from SA after the birth of this last child.
The info was given to me by a distant relly and I have validated all the SA information. She can't recall where the info came from. It is the WARD name I am researching - don't think we have any double barrel names in our family ;D I have only been able to check possible marriages to 1937.
Quite a bit of the information I have checked was inaccurate. Hoping sks with the Tasmanian discs can pick this one up. ;D
Cheers

hello there Cando
no luck up to 1899 in tasmania
but I did Google and found a few Locke-waters
including a John Locke-waters in the 1920 Sands Directory in Nsw
not much help though
regards jenn
-
Thanks Jenn - I did notice when validating the information on the marriage of Henry Archer and Mary Jane, that he was listed as WATERS but his father was Henry Locke WATERS - looks as though the LOCKE-WATERS name was adopted after marriage ::)
The NSW listing could possibly be their only son. I probably wont pursue this any further - would have been nice to have the date of death of Mary Jane WARD.
Another one for the back burner ;D
Cheers

Hi Cando,
I am a grandson of the Jocelyn Isobel Locke-Waters and Frank Berrisford you mentioned above. Apparently Henry Archer Locke-Waters left Australia for South Africa during the Anglo-Boer war (1898-1900?) and brought his family over to South Africa shortly after the war (1900-1902?)
Note spelling of Berrisford. Also, Muriel married Frank Marais (not Harris).
I will try and get details of Henry Archer Locke-Waters's place and date of death. I remember meeting Muriel in Peitermaritzburg as a child.
Send me an email for more information. Maybe you could share some from your side of the sea...
Regards,
Andy

HI, I am Andy's sister, granddaughter of Jocelyn Berrisford, my middle name is ISOBEL, named after her, and I have been trying to find info about her for years, but did not know where to start. I live in New Zealand, having moved here 3 years ago from South Africa. Frank Berrisford, my father, and Helen, my mother, are still alive in S/A and I have 3 brothers and a sister, all in S/A except one in Canada. I would like to get to know more. I do know that Jocelyn died in 1926, when my dad was 10 months old, and his half sister Marion Clifton, who was Jocelyn's one daughter from her previous marriage, brought him up with the help of his dad.Marion and Isobel, Jocelyn's 2 daughters, are no longer alive, and my dad is her only remaining relation to my knowledge.
Jocelyn's brother died in Mesopotamia when quite young I think.
I know about Muriel but not about Dorothy...........
regards

Hi Cathy and Andy
Well this is marvellous.
Henry Archer LOCKE-WATERS' wife Mary Jane WARD is where the connection is made with my husband's family.
Briefly my husband's grandmother was a WARD. Two WARD brothers, Alfred and George, married two STEGGALL sisters, Rosa and Fanny in Suffolk UK in 1850. I believe that both the WARD's and STEGGALL's were twins.
George and Fanny emigrated to Adelaide , South Australia in 1866 and Alfred and Rosa in 1865. Mary Jane WARD who married Henry Archer LOCKE-WATERS was the youngest daughter of Alfred and Rosa.
Rosa died in Dec 1866 after the birth of Mary Jane.
My OH's grandmother is the grandaughter of George and Fanny WARD.
I apologise for the incorrect spelling of your surname. I know nothing more about the chn named other than was given to me which I have outlined in my first posting but am more than willing to give you all I have on the WARD family in South Australia and England.
I do have names of Muriel's chn, Dorothy's chn and of course Jocelyn's chn from both marriages.
Cheers

I can help you with some details of Dorothy's children - am trying to track down Mary Davis, who moved from South Africa to the UK in about 1960-70
Thanks
-
Hi Aledoug :)
Welcome to rootschat :)
The only info I have for Dorothy's children are their names and places of birth and would love to have more information.
I am not aware of a Mary DAVIS unless you are referring to Dorothy Mary, the youngest child of Dorothy and her husband Harold DAVIS. The brief information came to me from a relative from South Africa who visited one of my OH's relatives many years ago and left quite a bit of family information along with some family photographs.
Cheers

Hi all
I am new to roots chat but I am part of the Ward/Steggall family and have been looking for the links to the two girls who survived to marry, Jane Ward died aged 16 I believe, Rachel Elizabeth my Great Grandmother married John Hyde, Harriett married a Richard Piper and Mary Jane as we see married Henry Archer Locke-Waters. Can anyone please help me with further information of the Locke-Waters family including Geoffrey Harrington Archer Locke-Waters and Elizabeth Evelyn Locke-Waters and any leads to the children of Mary Jane and Henry Archer and also Harriet and Richard Piper.
Best wishes
Mary

You seem to be referring to Rosa STEGGALL 1827-1866 and Alfred WARD 1820-1894 and their children Rosa Alice 1852-1867, Rachel Elizabeth 1857-1952, Harriett Clark 1860-1847 and Mary Jane 1862-c1935.
Mary Jane married Henry Archer WATERS 1867-1920. Their children Muriel 1893-1990, Jocelyn 1894-1926, Dorothy Archer 1896-1974 and John Evelyn Archer 1898-1922.
Rosa's sister Fanny STEGGALL 1823-1876 married Alfred's twin brother, George WARD 1820-1867 and their children George 1852-1942, John Thomas 1854-1931, Henry Whimper 1857-1947.
After the deaths of Rosa in 1866 and George WARD in 1867, Fanny and her brother in law married in 1871.
After one more post you can personal message me your email and I will send you information including photos of the Henry Archer WATERS family.
I have Rachel Elizabeth's marriage and her children.
Please don't post you email address on the forum as it will be removed by the moderators.

Yes, Absolutely correct Cando thank you we seem to be linked and I would love to be able to fill in some more gaps on our family tree and possibly add more information to your tree if you would like. I don't have any written information re the change of Henry Archer Waters name but I seem to recollect hearing about it in my lifetime. Do you have any of the links to the Archers and are they the same fakily from 'Woolmers' Tasmania?
Best wishes
Mary

Hi Cando
I am new to RootsChat - joined after reading your info on the locke Waters family. I have been trying to trace my Grandmothers ancestry for a long time and have only now been successful. Her name was Dorothy Davis, wife of Harold Davis, mother of Leslie Albert who was my father. Lad as he was called, married Marion Samson Reed who had six children, Ray, Marilyn, myself Candace, Alan, Lesley and Steven.
If you have access to Facebook you may find the research by Colleen Davis interesting. She has managed to acquire information dating back to the Ward family connection.
If you manage to hook up with this information please could you let me know how accurate it is and if possible any further information. I am particularly interested in anything regarding my Aunt Mary, Dorothy and Harold's daughter. We lost contact with her when she left for England and would love to know if she is still alive.
Many thanks

Hi Mary
My great grandmother was Mary Jane Locke Waters and my grandmother was Dorothy Davis married to Harold Davis. I am searching for any information regarding my Aunt Mary who left South Africa for the UK in the Sixties and we have had no contact with her since.
Please could you let me know if you have any info regarding her and any additional information you have on the Locke Waters and Ward families that has not been added to this post
Many thanks
Candace

Hello Candace
Thank you for your queries. Yes I have you added to our family tree and have quite a lot of Ward information but the Locke-Waters information is scanty but growing although I have precious little about Dorothy Mary Locke-Waters unfortunately. The family members seem to be scattered far and wide which is interesting but makes tracking them a real challenge. I haven't heard from anyone about a reason why Dorothy Mary would have gone to England or where she ight have gone to even commence searching. Any further information needs to be imparted using the personal message facility though Candace for privacy and security. I look forward to your further communications.
Best wishes

Hi
Welcome to rootschat.
I have in my research that Leslie Albert died aged 36 with wife Marion and have you as one of their six children.
I have researched and shared the information for my OH's WARD family. Mary Jane WARD's mother Rosa and my OH's gggrandmother Fanny STEGGALL were sisters. I have also researched and shared the information on the WATERS' family as I had no information at the time of researching, of Henry Archer WATERS who was Mary Jane WARD's husband.
After one more post you can pm me and I will give you my email address.
Click on the green icon under my user name and a new window will open enabling you send a secure private message.
I have also been asked to find Dorothy Mary DAVIS b. 21 Aug 1934. I have trawled the deaths in the UK with no success. There are a couple of possible death registrations, but she may be still alive. Have you considered that she may settled in another country other than the UK.
Cheers

Hello Mary Dingle
I am the granddaughter of Jocelyn Locke-waters. I live in New Zealand, having moved here 5 1/2 years ago, from South Africa. I have very little time available to look up family history, but am very interested in it. Maybe one day when I retire I can spend more time on it. Where do you live?
My husband and I will hopefully be visiting Adelaide next year, to try and find out where my family lived and worked. We also hope to meet Cando and her other half, my 4th cousin - something I am looking forward to doing.

Thomas Alexander Waters Baptised 13 Oct 1810 in Durnford, Wiltshire, England is the son of John Waters Bap: 17 Apr 1785 Stratford, Wiltshire, England and Eliza Locke Bap:16 Feb 1787, Wylye, Wiltshire, England.
Eliza Locke is the sister of my 3x great grandmother Jane Locke who married John Archer, 1st Jun 1813 at St Margarets, Westminster, England.
John Archer was a tobacco and snuff manufacture in Tothill street Westminster and that business was passed onto his son John Alexander Archer on Johns death in 1841.
John Archer's youngest son Frederick Edwards Archer arrived in South Australia in 1852 and from memory Thomas Alexander Waters arrived in South Australia in 1838 with his second wife (dont quote me on that)
I just hope i have given you some insight to the Waters, Locke, Archer & Ollier surnames.
-
Thanks for the info about the Archers - we have been trying for a while to find out where the Archer came from in Evelyn Archer Locke-Waters' name.
-
So glad I could help.
Eliza Locke's mother and her family can be traced back to around 1500 as her surname was Ollier.
I manage 5 dna kits for Archer descendants if your interested?
Dna kits are on GEDmatch, FTdna, My Heritage & some are on Ancestry please feel free to P.M if you would like the names and kit numbers.
