Title: Baptisms/Marriage(s) - Tracing John SNELL, and parents
Post by: jeenie on Monday 19 March 07 13:09 GMT (UK)
Hi everyone -  I am new to this.  :) :-\

I am trying to locate the baptism, or any detail, of John SNELL who according to his Death Certificate was born c1833 in Bodman Cornwall.  He migrated to Australia late 1842, arriving '43, with sisters Elizabeth and Susan, and his parents John born c1786 and Ann born c1792.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.  :)
Thank you
Jeenie.

yes, thank you, Catherine.

John age 7, and his parents are the people I am particularly interested in.
I can only assume that Edwin died before they left England.

Thanks again,
Jennie.  :) :)

Thanks very much, Sheila.  :) :) :)

Would it be that St Ervan is anywhere near to Bodman ?  It is very difficult to understand the geography being so far distant.  And would it be at all possible to locate John and Ann's marriage and/or baptism details ?  You see, I am new to this English researching, and don't understand it.   :-[ :-[

Hi Jeenie

Sorry but I can't help with the location of St Ervan in relation to Bodman.  Maybe best to start another post and hopefully someone who knows the area will be more help.  Genuki is usually very helpful but I had no luck on this occasion.

Can't see a marriage for John Snell & Ann just prior to the birth of Elizabeth Snell but there is a baptism:

Edwin Saunders Snell, 25 December 1836, St Ervan but mother is Jane, no father listed.  I wonder if they had older children and Edwin (on 1841) is actually their grandson.

Will have a look for earlier marriages and see what shows up.

Regards ... Sheila

Hi Jennie,

I find this simple little map very helpful in seeing the layout of the parishes.

http://www.cornwall-opc.org/MAPS/newCONmap.htm

Of course there are many more more complex maps about but the simplicity of this one makes it easy to see just where the parishes are situated.

Sorry I haven't come up with much else. There is a baptism in St Winnow possibly Edwin

SNELL Edwin Henry 19 Jun 1836 St Winnow Parents John and Anne

and the only marriage I have found so far  is in Kenwyn and does not list either as not of the parish so not confident with this one

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/Cornwall/Kenwyn/Marriages.html

These entries would yield a little more information in there entirety therefore I would suggest you contact the relevent OPC's and see if they can tell you any more.

http://www.cornwall-opc.org/Structure/Parishes.htm

Baptisms will list fathers Occupation and possibly further on where they were residing. Marriages at this time will not list Fathers but it will state if they were from another parish and witnesses may help. If the entries Sheila has found along with these all connect it involves a few possible parishes of interest. Of course as it involves a few parishes so these entries may not connect.

Cornwall is a very good county for research. So much information is available. So many parish records have been transcribed and most of the census is available free.

Another thought is where in Australia did the parents die. If you are talking the Eastern States those certificates should provide a lot of information. ;)
Just wondering you mention young Johns Death Cert Death Cert listing Bodmin as POB so guessing you are talking eastern states. Does it not list his mother's maiden name?

Cheers Kris  :D

Thank you very much Sheila and Kris for what you have done, and are doing.  It is very much appreciated and it is very good of you.   :D :)

And I can hardly wait to get "stuck in" to the sites that Kris has mentioned !  :D ;D
I have another relative from Cornwall as well, so this will be doubly helpful !

Actually John Snr died 23 Jan 1863 Mt Barker Springs South Australia, as did Ann on 28 May 1870 and Elizabeth (HARPER) 31 Aug 1910.  John Jnr died 9 Jun 1918 in the Royal Adelaide Hospital - and his Death Certificate says Birthplace not known, England, and it is actually Elizabeth's which states Birthplace as Bodman Cornwall.  (But I did not consider it made any actual difference.  I have tried to obtain the Hospital records, but have been told they are still confidential.)  Susan was married twice, but I have not been able to locate her death.

Thank you again, ever so much,
Jeenie.   :) :)

Hi, Kris.

"The simple little map" of which you advised is indeed very helpful, particularly to one who knows so little about English geography.

Thank you again,
Jeenie.  :)

Hi, everyone.

"Our" John SNELL, the subject above, from Cornwall, town unknown, died in South Australia 9 Jun 1918 age 84.   (His older sister Elizabeth is recorded here as born in Bodmin.)   :-[

For what it is worth, there is another John SNELL, this time from Chacewater in Cornwall, who also died in South Australia, 20 Mar 1914 age 80.

Thank you again for your ideas and suggestions.  What I have eventually found would take a full page to explain.  Suffice it to say, briefly, is it appears that Elizabeth, Susan and John had an older sister Jane baptised in 1815;  there is no doubt that her parents were John SNELL and Ann BUCKINGHAM who married 1814 and little doubt her younger siblings were John Buckingham 1817, Eliza Ann 1820, Mary Ann 1824, Elizabeth 1828, Susan 1829, and John 1834 - and Edwin who was baptised 1832 and died 1833.  Also Jane was in the St Ervan 1841 Census.  Most of the above seem to have married in South Australia - also Edwin Saunders SNELL 27Mar1860 age 23.
Thank you again.   :D

Now all I have to do is find the parents of John and Ann.   ::)   ;D

[refer to new posting 05 April 08 - for Ann Buckingham lookup]

Hi everyone, I am new to using this chat forum so I am unsure if everyone that has used this thread before will be notified??
I am also researching John Snell & Ann Buckingham. I am in Western Australia and my husband has Snell's in his family. John Snell & Ann Buckingham are actually ancestors of friends of ours and I am trying to see if there is a link between our and their Snell's. John & Ann came to South Australia via Tasmania and our Snell's came straight to South Australia. All came from Cornwall and all were miners. It would seems unusual that they all came from the same area and ended up in the same area on the other side of the world and not have been related in some way. I am just looking for that elusive person that binds them together!
After reading other conversations, I can confirm that Edwin Saunders SNELL was Jane's son and grandson to John & Ann. They adopted and raised him from what I was told and that is how he came to South Australia with them.
Does anyone here have a family tree on Ancestry or completed the Ancestry DNA test? My husband has, so I am also trying to use this to track down ancestors. It is a very interesting tool and has helped me greatly with my Italian heritage.
I hope to hear back from some of you soon.
Kerry  :)

I don't have much to offer. I'm a descendant of John Snell/Ann Buckingham.
I'm fairly new to searching and up to now have just been searching online.
I've just been recently looking for information on the children of John and Ann Snell.
I believe John Snell / Ann Clarke married St Austell June 3 1786 are the parents of John Snell born 1786 .
