Title: Help Offers all now Completed - Thanks Scatty
Post by: scatty on Sunday 28 November 04 14:19 GMT (UK)
Moderator comment: this offer is now withdrawn, as Scatty has relocated.

The thread will be retained, due to the information it contains

I am happy to try and obtain information in relation to  Jersey,Channel Islands  and  answer general questions regarding what is available to  researchers. Unfortunately I am unable to offer any assistance with the other Channel Islands.

Please try to provide as much known information in order facilitate the search and while I cannot promise a positive  find I will certainly look at all requests posted.

My research on your behalf takes place in The Archive Centre and following recent issues on Rootschat I have inquired as to the position regarding copyright.

I have been assured  their records are not subject to copyright and are freely available to all  and may be reproduced.

Hi Scatty,
I have been looking into a link for some time and just found a small breakthrough, wonder if you can add anything to it please?

1881 census
Philip MESNEY     Head    M    Male    51    Alderney, Guernsey, Channel Islands    Magistrate & General Agent
and family......
Huret Street, St Anne, Guernsey

could be related by marriage to a Barbenson family who were lawyers of Alderney.

Philip's son Giffard DeJersey Mesny born 1871 Alderney married in Leeds, Yorkshire in 1894 but may have still been home in 1891. I am trying to solve the puzzle of why Giffard and his wife Emmaline Charlesworth were absent from Yorkshire it seems in 1901. Two of their small children were with grandfather Edmondson Charlesworth in Bradford 1901.

The eldest grandchild, Stanley De Jersey Mesny was born in Alderney in 1895 so they must have flitted back and forth and were wealthy enough to do it.

so any help with any census would be great if you could please?

Many thanks,
Sue.

My g-g-grandparents Edmund Bogg (born 1806 Isle of Sheppey) and Anne Glenville born Mevagissy 1817 married in St. Peter Port, Guernsey on the 15th November round about 1834. Anne's parents moved to St. Peter Port some time after Anne's birth and she had siblings born in Guernsey. Her parents were Thomas Glenville (ropemaker) and Mary. Edmund also had a brother Thomas Bogg born 1809 on Isle of Sheppey who seems to have married in Guernsey as well before emigrating to New Zealand. Edmund was in the Royal Artillary for 23 years. We know that he spent 6 years in Ceylon and two in Canada but it also seems liekly that he was stationed in Guernsey as well and that was where he and Anne met.

Although I know what happened to Edmund and Anne after 1806 I know nothing of their life before. Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you

Frances

Hi Scatty ~ I would like to take you up on your kind offer:-
My gt grandfather Henry Harry LEIGH married in Battersea, London 10 Jul 1892 then aged 27.(b.circa 1865). In 1901 census he gives his place of birth as Jersey. On the marriage cert Father's name is Frank LEIGH Ships Steward. Helpful occupation for locating census entries!
Only other info is the certificate was first issued as LEE, but amended in 1898 to LEIGH.
Not much to go on, but any help would be much appreciated.  Kind regards   Chris

Hell ChrisJ,

Here is a short breakdown of my search for Henry Harry Leigh / Lee on the 1871/1881/1891 Channel Island census.
Also tried Harry Leigh / Lee and also looked for  him with father Frank.

Firstly no sign at  all of Frank.

One Henry Leigh  found in 1871  was age 3 boarding with a Nicholson family but born Liverpool.

Another  Henry Leigh found in 1891 age 11 was boarding at Teighmores  School in Grouville, no birthplace given and too young to match with yours.

This may be of interest to you and you never know may prove at a later stage to be a family member that one  John  Studdy Leigh in 1867 left a bequest of two glass decanters to a Henry Leigh.

If  you  wish to obtain a copy of this document  in the future should you prove a connection I can advise how to obtain it.

There is also the strong  possibility that young Henry was taken to uk at a very early age, have you tried any earlier uk census ?

Next time I am in the Archive Centre I will try to find an note of the index ref for his birth but it may take a while.

Best Wishes  and do post again if you have any additional information which may help in the search.

Hi Scatty ~ many thanks for the prompt reply. I did think it would be a needle in a haystack job. I have looked on my UK1881CD but no obvious entry. The only other thought is perhaps father Frank started life as Francis. Also there is also a possible sister to Henry called Flo (Florence/Flora?). When my parents married in 1941 there was an Aunt Flo living with 'Grannie Leigh' (Henry's widow Annie).  Annie Bartlett didn't have a sister with that name so it does look as if Aunt Flo may have LEIGH connections.
Thank you again for looking for me. Best regards  Chris

Dear Ang,
I will try to help but am hoping you can give me some idea around which date this accident took place and which island. From your posting I understand it occured in Guernsey, is that correct ?

I myself live in Jersey so am not in a position to search Guernsey Archives but will try to find some information for you.

Guernsey Press the local newspaper has been established since the late 1800s so they may have records etc.

Best Wishes

I am trying to trace the family history of my late father THOMAS FRANCIS JACKSON said to have been born 20 April 1908 in Melton Mowbray. I am new to genealogy so please be gentle! My father was the illegitimate son of CHARLOTTE SERAPIS SOADY JACKSON who was born circa 1869 on HMS troopship Serapis. She died on 2nd Feb 1940 in Nottingham. My father had a sister (half-sister?), also illegitimate, called ELIZABETH HELEN BUCKENHAM nee JACKSON said to have been born in Melton Mowbray  on 23 November 1891 (although I can find no record of her birth).

Charlotte Serapis Soady Jackson's parents were THOMAS JACKSON born in Harston circa 1846 and CHARLOTTE ???? born in ST.  HELIER JERSEY circa 1843.  Charlotte Serapis Soady Jackson had an older brother called CHARLES EDW. LIDDELL JACKSON born in Portsmouth circa 1863. I did wonder whether Charlotte's maiden name might be LIDDELL or SOADY, the third names given to her son and daughter respectively as these do not sound like conventional forenames. Of course, this could be a total red herring. I should like to find out Charlotte's maiden name and wondered if you could offer any assistance in this endeavour please.

Charlotte from St Helier seems to have died (less likely divorced) sometime between 1881 and 1890. In the 1881 census she is living with her family at 101 Park Street Lenton Nottingham. She is 38, a laundress and they have three boarders in their house, all railwaymen. Her husband Thomas is a drayman. However, by the 1891 census Thomas has a new wife ANNIE ???? and a young son called  JOHN WILLIAM and they are living at 19 Main Street in the village of Eastwell in Leicestershire. Ten years later, they have moved to a farm in Goadby Marwood and have another child called LILY JACKSON.

Thank you for any assistance you are able to offer me in this search.

Hi scatty,

I would be most appreciative if you could look up information on the Channel Islands censuses re my great-great-grandmother or her family.

My great-great-grandmother was Amelia Susan Le Lievre who was born at Les Courts Fallaize Mont Durant off The Jerbourg Road, St Peters Port, Guernsey in 1850. She was baptised at the Parish of St Martin on May 31 1850. Her parents were Pierre (Peter) Le Lievre (born about 1821) and Elizabeth Machon-Bailey (born about 1817). They married at St Martins church on Jul 12 1847. My great-great-grandmother Amelia emigrated (on her own) to New Zealand in the late 1860's or early 1870's.

I am looking for details of Amelia's siblings, her siblings families (wives, children), and details of her parent's families (parents, siblings). I am also wishing to establish if she was in Guernsey in 1871, or had already emigrated to New Zealand.

Unfortunately I don't know if her parents were born in the Channel Islands or not. I do know that Elizabeth died in Jul 1860 and is buried at Mont Durand. Also Pierre (Peter) died on Apr 15 1896 at Courtes Fallaises, St Martins.

One of my family members has been able to get some information from the 1881 Census which states taht Pierre (Peter) was residing at Bayview Farm St Martin age 59 with his second wife Marguerite (Margaret) age 56 and sons Peter age 33 and Robert W.R. age 25. I would also love details of Pierre's (Peter) occupation from this census.

Thank you

Hi There,

The 1881 census  states that Peter Snr aged 59 is a "Farmer of 14 acres employing one man and Peter Jnr aged 33 is a "Farmers son".
I will look into this family at a little more depth for you.

Title: Dart Family on Jersey Island
Post by: Gil Barnett on Sunday 30 October 05 04:17 GMT (UK)
Hi Scatty,

I have one line that I trace back to Jersey. I found a match for George Dart (born 1845) on the 1880 US census that said his birthplace was Jersey. I have used the censuses on the island since then to get an idea of who his family was, etc. The number of Darts on the island is so small and they all seem to have come from England. I've been working under the assumption that most (if not all) of them are related and I've been trying to get a bigger picture about their history. My direct line (George's parents and children left for Canada about 1854) and they settled in Quebec (a dead end) except for George who went to Ontario after he got married and except for a short time in the US stayed there.

Do you have any suggestions on how I can find out more information about this family while they in Jersey? What resources are available and how do I get access to them? What kind of vital information is available, etc.? Any advice would be great.

Scatty,
I have an ancestor born in 1807, Jersey.
If I provide more info to you, do you think you  may be able to find a birth record for him.
I am not sure if he was born there from parents "passing through" or if they were there a while.
Regards,
Claudia
