Title: Farquher/Faragher/Fargher ??
Post by: Keith Bateman on Monday 29 November 04 15:30 GMT (UK)
Hi All

You may have noticed that I have just "reached" the Isle of Man!! ;) ;)

I have just received a copy marriage certificate on which a witness is Edward Farquher - I have another relative in this group Isabella Faragher, who I think is the daughter of Richd Fargher.

I presume these are all the same family - just different spellings?

Can anyone try to "sound" the name for me?

Being from Cheshire - I'm a bit slow at pronunciation ;D

Cheers
Keith

It may be that they are pronounced Farrar or Far-er.

I have a MARGARET ELIZABETH FARAGHER who married JOHN HAMPTON -1813- Douglas Lonan Isle of Man.
Their son James b.1814 married ELEANOR LOONEY at St Barnabas Douglas Isle of Man 1843.
James and Eleanor's daughter MARGARET ANN b.1844 married WILLIAM FARAGHER.
The family name that I decend from is HAMPTON.
I believe that it was quite common for them to marry cousins.
I will be interested to know if this links up with your side in any way.

Hi Tim,

Most of my Faragher seems to have been born around Rushen/Patrick area.

If you have a look at my website you will find my line:- http://batemans-history.rootschat.net

I have added a few others all from IGI into my personal software - but some of these are just educated guesses.
Phillip Faragher b Nov 9th 1760 Patrick - son of Thomas
Thomas Faragher b 1717 Patrick son of Jon

My last definite is Richard b Patrick Nov 22 1801 - son of Phillip and Elenor Quirk who married May 9th 1789 in Patrick.

Hope some of these are in your tree.

Have a look at the "McBurnie" page on my site - there is an explanation on how to pronounce the name taken from Manx Radio!

Cheers

Keith

by the way there are No coats of Arms for Manx families (except the Christians + one or two post 1850) - see www.manxnotebook.com/famhist/abear.htm - I've no idea where your pretty picture came from.

I have a Catherine Fargher 1874 who married my gt gt uncle in1895 William Burrows of malew. They brought up their children William Tyson Burrows, Kathleen, Henry Fargher Burrows at Ballagilley farm on the Ronaldsway estate. These Farghers were tenants of a neighbouring farm,as were the rest of William's family

Hi oddmo,

I hope you have visited my website ^^^^^ and seen the Faraghers on there - I have not got much further on this line as my 2x great grandmother was in Cumberland by 1851 - and therefore I no nothing of what happened to the rest left on the Isle of Man.

Do you know who Catherine's parents were?

Cheers

Keith

thanks for your reply; I was most impressed with your web site; it must have taken years of effort and enthusiasm to gather it all in and organise it so well.
Our catherine fargher's parents were thomas and isabelle of ballachrink farm malew. She had sisters jane ann and esther, brother john. Amazing coincidence is this is the farm where we stay when we visit IOM; a beautiful, peaceful spot which overlooks the farm where catherine lived after her marriage to my gt gt uncle
best wishes

Hi oddmo,

My mother ofter told me of her holidays she had when she was young in the Isle of Man - never told me the probable reason she also went was that she had relatives there!!

Now I have a couple of photos of her mum and wonder if they were on the Isle!

Hope you took some photos of the Catherine's farm so you can use them when you do your website - quite easy to do these days with the modern software programmes.

Cheers

A summary of mother's will is on http://www.manxnotebook.com - however I presume you have actually checked the microfilm of the official copy of the Malew register - several of the igi entries are patron submitted (one looks wrong) they also have mother's name which was not a feature of Malew reg until c.1740 apart from illeg's (their first child was illeg but then legitimised by later marrage - the mother's will has child joney but no bapt I can see which is somewhat strange

Hi Keith

It appears that there was one member of the family who went off to Australia and was never heard of again.

However I have also been advised of a member of the family who went to the USA and married a Cecily Teare from Peel. His name had been changed to Farquhar on naturalisation.  (Could be the same person or 2 generations)

(I am a novice at this - just thought that I would fill in the gaps in the bible before I pass it on a generation)

Any help would be greatfully received.

Frances

Thank you for the information - a great help

Snooty
you should be easily able to trace back a few more generations - especially if they owned the farm I think wm -> peter -> peter
the name peter is unusual on the Island so wonder how it entered the family

Henry Faragher married Catherine Chapman in belfast approx 1880.
They must have separated as 1901 and 1911 census no mention of Henry.
Is this Faragher part of your connection
