Title: George Street Chapel Huddersfield - does it still exist?
Post by: JenClark on Thursday 05 April 07 19:54 BST (UK)
Hello,

I am trying to locate where George Street Chapel in Huddersfield is or was. Does anyone remember it or know of any maps or photos including it?

My Great great great grandfather was the Reverend there between 1860 and 1864, before moving on to Garden Street Chapel in Sheffield. In his obituary it states that: "His body was taken by train to George Street Chapel Huddersfield to be buried". His name was Robert Stainton.

I was hoping that the Chapel or graveyard may still be in existence, if so I would love to see it. I am hoping that he may have been taken back to George Street Chapel to be buried with his first wife Elizabeth (nee Warburton) who died in Huddersfield in 1862.

I am also interested to know if there are any baptism, marriage or burial records for this chapel? I think he may have baptised his two sons there (Robert Kirk Stainton in 1860, and James Hayton Stainton in 1864).

I think it would be an independent or congregational chapel, if that helps.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated  :)

Jenny

Hi Jenny

Im sorry I cant tell you anything about the chapel but I can tell you that Trinity St still exists today a very busy thriving part of the Town Centre and at the bottom of Trinity St is George St which runs down along side of the railway station but there isnt a church there but that doesnt mean that many years ago there wasnt one.
There was a church at the top of George St but Im almost certain it was a baptist church called St Johns, which if my memory serves me correct was demolished in the late 1960/70s to make way for what is now St Patricks catholic church.

Sorry I cant be more helpful

Thanks Joe,

They were living in Trinity Street when Elizabeth Warburton/Stainton died in 1862. I have an odd feeling that the chapel was demolished (and probably any graves with it) and made into a carpet factory....is there one of those in George Street?

Jen,
There is a Dr Williams' Library in London which has some records of non-conformist chapels and ministers.
It would be worth asking them what they know about your Robert Stainton. Maybe they have a website.  I  wrote an old fashioned letter and got the info  I was seeking about an Independent Chapel minister.

Also, if there was a grave yard attached to the chapel and the graveyard cleared  as part of the redevelopment there would have to be a exhumation order at the Home Office to allow the exhumations of the graves.  I had a similar situation in Accrington when the Oak St Chapel was demolished due to dry rot and the site redeveloped.
The Home Office tend to ignore requests- in the end I sent a registered letter for which they had to sign a receipt and thus got a next day reply!

Also the local Hudderfield council would know about the demolition and replanning-
Lots of bureaucratic joys ahead for you.
Good luck & let us know what happens

Hi Charlotte,

Thanks for the info, I probably should have updated this thread a bit, as a fellow rootschatter has located the grave of both the Rev Robert Stainton and his first wife Elizabeth Stainton (nee Warburton). They are buried in Edgerton Cemetery, New North Road, Huddersfield.

But I would love to find the baptism records for his sons though so maybe Dr William's Library will be able to help? Still haven't located the chapel site, but I am assured that George Street has changed somewhat since that time and now all that remains of the George Street I am after is a small section called "Upper George Street". So it may remain a mystery...

Jenny, Good news about locating the graves- lucky you in that and what kind person who told you.

Re the records. I can tell you that the book "My Ancestor were Conregationalists" by David Clifford, pub SOG 1997 does not list any records for  a George St, Chapel in Huddersfield.   It has 3 other chapels: Ramsden St, Clayton West, Highfield. Records fo rthese are atHuddersfield and wakefield Ro.  So no jpy there.
Try Dr William's Library- I found bits of info about Rev Charles Hargreaves in their collection.

I can tell you that Highfield is just off New North Road in Huddersfield and just below Edgerton Cemetry.

Ive no idea if there is a chapel still there though.

Hi

In 'Huddersfield, A Most Handsome Town' (E.A.Hilary Haigh 1992) it says of the George Street Chapel:
"An independent chapel in George Street, affiliated to the Evangelical Union, built in 1856, was bought by the Congregationalists in 1870 to replace South Street and was home to a church from 1884 to 1887".

Lesley

Mirf, is there any way I can contact the Huddersfield Local History Dept @ Huddersfield Library from abroad? I am in Australia, but would love to see if they have a picture!

Hi

I have not seen any records for George Street chapel and I would say that it did not have a graveyard.
The Highfield Chapel which is now flats had a graveyard. The Highfield Funeral Home as nothing to do with the chapel and it is off Trinity Street.

Hi Philip,

That would be amazing if I could see a picture of the George Street Chapel!!! I have been wondering what it looked like for a while now :)

I will PM you with my e-mail address so that we can exchange info if anything turns up at the library...welcome to Rootschat too  ;D ;D ;D

Hi John,

I am not too concerned about burials at George Street as another Rootschatter found that my family are buried as below:

A fellow rootschatter has located the grave of both the Rev Robert Stainton and his first wife Elizabeth Stainton (nee Warburton). They are buried in Edgerton Cemetery, New North Road, Huddersfield.

But I would love to find the baptism records for his sons though so maybe Dr William's Library will be able to help?

It is a pity there are no baptismal records for the Chapel as I am almost certain that he would have baptised his sons there, do you think they would be recorded elsewhere?

Hi
Not sure whether or not this is still a live issue but in researching one of my ancestors I have just received a copy of a marriage certificate for a marriage between John Mitchell and Lucy Ream on 24th Dec 1862.  It was at the George Street Chapel Huddersfield and carried out 'according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Evangelical Union Independents' by Robert Stainton and the Registrar was William Crow.
Hope its of interest.

Hi David,

Welcome to Rootschat  ;D

Family history never ends, so I am always glad to hear new information about my family  ;)

How fabulous that my great great great grandfather officiated at your relatives wedding!! He was a very passionate and engaging man, so rest assured I am certain that it was a wonderful service!! He was also apparently a very good singer....not that I am suggesting that he may have broken into song during the wedding!

Thanks for adding some flavour to my research, now I know what he was doing Christmas Eve in 1862.... it is much appreciated :)

Hi Jenny

Thanks for welcome - yes I did wonder about a Christmas Eve Wedding!

I am trying to get a feel for the religious leanings of my relatives which I think were not mainstream - whatever that was at the time.  Do you have further info about the nature of your GGG Grandfather's ministry and what was meant by 'Evangelical Union Independents' that was on the marriage certificate.  I believe it to be some form of congregationalism but any info would be appreciated.

Regards

David

Yes he was a congregational minister, I will have a hunt around and see if I can find anything amongst my research that might be of interest  ;)

Just collected a marriage in 1885 at George Street Chapel, Huddersfield from ancestry.co.uk It is in their Nonconformist collection.  It is in the register book for Milton Congregational Church.

Don't know whether this is any help!

Hi

Just seen a c1900 map reference to the chapel and it says Mission Ch. and it was on the west corner of George Street and Spring Wood Street.
It would have been demolished when they made the ring road. If you look at a modern map it would have been where the slip road on to Trinity Street from the Ring Road is.
It would have been demolished at about the same time as the Queens Street Mission was built in Kings Street and as now been moved to Lord Street. I think this was associated with the Queen Street Chapel but I might be worth sending an inquiry to the Mission on Lord Street.

I think your chapel will be under the site of what is now a leisure centre and pool.  It replaced the centre for adults who had disabilities, and had the address of George Street, Springwood.  Have you tried Kirklees Image Archive online for a photo of the chapel?
Good luck with your search.
