Title: Please can someone look up Martin Allen?
Post by: ~Rachel~ on Monday 16 April 07 19:07 BST (UK)
Hiya,

Would somebody be able to look up a Martin Allan/Allen for me?

He emigrated to Canada after 1930, was originally from Ireland and had possibly spent some time living in Wales. He was probably born between 1890 and 1910.

Sorry I know that's really not a lot to go on  :-\

I suppose I'm hoping there might only be a couple of them!

Thanks,

Rachel

There are 226 "M. Allan's" currently "listed" in the phone book accross Canada.

The name of "M. Allen" has well over 300 in Ontario alone. I think the best thing to do would be to check passenger lists when they become available on Ancestors on Board. They should show where he was planning to move to, which could give you a better idea on where to look for him.

Right now they are up to 1919, but apparently sometime this year, they will be up to 1960.

Does your Martin Allen have a middle name?

A Martin Forbes Allen died 4 Mar 1966 in Saanich BC . His reported age was 77 which would put him into the time frame you suggest.

Had he been a coal miner in Wales? There was coal mining on Vancouver Island.

Hi Beth,

He may well of done, I'm prepared to look into anything!

The problem with tracing him is that he MAY have been the father of my grandmother, who was born illegitimately and then adopted.

All she knows about him are the few details I have.  :( And those details might be totally made up.  ???

I'm going to give it a go though, do you know how I order that death cert?

Cheers,

Rachel

Hi Rachel,

The Provincial Web site is:

http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/textual/governmt/vstats/v_events.htm

On the site you will find instructions for procuring a digital record or a certificate. The digital record will be cheaper, and quicker to get, and should show all the available information but do remember that death certificate information is only as good as that provided at the time. If the death is reported by a non family member there may not be much useful information on it. I have forgotten exactly what questions get asked when you register a death but they are not nearly as helpful as some of the others which we read about on Rootschat.
