Title: Knackers Knowl - where is it near?
Post by: Keith Bateman on Wednesday 01 December 04 01:05 GMT (UK)
Hi All

I think I have the same person in 3 censuses(?)

He was born in the 1881 census at Knackers Knowl, Devon
In the 1891 - Crown Hill, Devon
and 1901 was born in Egg Backland, Devon.

Are these 3 places very near each other - and he did that just to throw me!!  ;D ;D
Cheers
Keith

Hi:
If you go to the Genuki site with all the Registration districts and click on 'Devon' as you scroll down you will come to the Plympton St. Mary Registration District which includes a place called Egg Buckland. If you look at say an Ordnance survey map that may reveal the other place names nearby.
Right, That's got rid of my insomnia. I'm off to bed. Good luck ;D

Hi

Thanks for those tips it set me off and I found where Knackers Knowl was - with a place like that no wonder he changed his birthplace!
The site was www.plymouthdata.info/Place-Names.htm
which might be interesting for others.

CROWN HILL -- The area was originally known as Knackers Knowle and is a modern name of circa 1880 to denote land at the crown of a hill.   Nackershole 1765; Knackers Hole 1823.  Origin uncertain but clearly what "Devon Place-names" describes as a 'term of contempt'.  The first part could be connected with the present meaning of that word as a worked-out horse

Thanks again

Keith

By the way - in putting Knackers Knowl into google I came up with a message on another site with relatives of mine in his question - I have replied but it has been returned -

Now I see it was written in 1998 - annoying to have someone out there doing part of my tree and not being able to get into touch.

So near yet so far  :( :(

Knackers Knowl[e] is now known as HONICKNOWLE, Plymouth.
Crownhill (all one word = not Crown Hill) is only up the road and Eggbuckland is just a little further away - all virtually coming off the same through road.
I live in Plymouth - (lived in Honicknowle as a child).
Hope this helps.
Kind regards, Priscilla

Hi Priscilla,

Many thanks for that -"great" it confirms my man is one and the same - just thought he would throw me by changing his place of birth - slightly!

Welcome to a great site by the way - just shows we all have information valuable to others - even when we don't think we have!

Now can you answer this then? -- What does "knowle" mean - no wonder they changed the name of the place where you grew up - perhaps to stop people always asking if you were "tired"  ;D ;D

Cheers

Keith

Hi there!
Knackersknowle means "The hill of the knacker's yard".
If you open your Search Engine and then tap in Knackersknowle you will discover a vast amount of information - am sure you will be surprised!
Plymouth and West Devon Records Office at Clare Place, Coxside, Plymouth, telephone 01752 305940 has wonderful archives and they may be able to give you further information.
Another site you may like to look at is Plymouth Photographs.
Best wishes Priscilla
