I have run up against a brick wall with researching someone born relatively early.
Maude Elizabeth BLUNT married Arthur Thomson in Islington in 1910, and gave her age as 24. Making an approximate year of birth as 1886.
Unfortunately she gave no name for her Father.
Checking the 1901 Census there are a four likely candidates:
Maud Blunt aged 17 (bc:1883/4) born Islington.
Maud Blunt aged 15 (bc: 1885/6) born Kent Plumstead.
Maud Blunt aged 14 (bc: 1886/7) born Pontypool.
Maud Blunt aged 14 (bc: 1886/7) born Limehouse East.
Checking freebmd there are also four likely candidates:
Maud Elizabeth Blunt, born 1st qtr 1884, Maidstone RD Ref 2a 719.
Maud Blunt, born 1st qtr 1884, Reading RD Ref 2c 368.
Maud Blunt, born 1st qtr 1885, Hendon RD Ref 1d 1277
Maud Blunt, born 1st qtr 1887, Woolwich RD Ref 1d 1277
Query 1: Could Kent Plumstead, be the Woolwich RD?
There are no entries on either the census or freebmd for Maude spelt with an “e”
Query 2: Without the 1911 census available to check where ‘my’ Maude gave for a place of birth is there any way of progressing that doesn’t involve buying all 4 birth certificates?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Query 1: Could Kent Plumstead, be the Woolwich RD?
Yes, Plumstead's 19th century Registration District & Poor Law Union was Lewisham -1868, Woolwich 1868-.

I woudn't worry too much about the spelling "without an E" - sometimes mistakes were made.
The Pontypool lass is still in Wales in 1901, so I think you might be safe to discount her (but you can't be sure!)
What were the witnesses names? They sometimes help to identify a family group.
kind regards, Arranroots ;)

Hi again Robert
Here are the marriages on freebmd for 1901 - 1920
Marriage
Chesterton Mar 1904 (Maud Mary)
Leicester Sep 1906
Aston Sep 1907
Merthyr Tydfil Sep 1907
Islington Jun 1910 (yours, Maude Elizabeth)
Birmingham Dec 1910
Woolwich Sep 1912 (Maud L)
Wantage Sep 1918 (Maud L)
I don't know how they tie in, other than that the Woolwich one might be one of the birth certs above and the Merthyr Tydfil one might be the Pontypool Maud.
Lots of guesswork here!
A :)

Thanks for the guidance.
Aaron you asked about witnesses
They were:
R. Pass and C.A. Gillard
No help there I think.

Hi, For what it is worth there is a Maud M Blunt in 1891 census 19 Matlock Street Limehouse
Joseph Blunt 43 Drill master in school born Poplar
Jane 27 wife Crawley Sussex
Maud M 2 Poplar
There was a board school a few streets away in Aston Street.
It may help you narrow it down.

Jennifer,
Thanks, I think that eliminates one person. My Maud is definitely Maud E. The Maud you mention appears in 1901 with a younger census at a home for motherless children in Maldon Essex. There are some really sad stories out there.
Best Regards,
Robert

If no father was entered on the marriage cert, then isn't it a possibility that Maude was illegit?

Hi again,
Sue, I guess you are correct, or that she just didn't know her father's name having been put in an orphange very young. Lots of questions!?!
Having looked at all this helpful information I am beginning to lean towards Maud Blunt bc: 1885/6 whose 1901 census entry shows she was born in Kent, Plumstead which we have linked to the bmd entry for 1st qtr 1887, in Woolwich RD ref 1d 1277.
Before I order a certificate could someone look up the 1891 census entry for her, when I guess her age will be given as 5. You never know there may be a middle initial.
Thanks in advance.

Hi
As freeBMD is not complete (although always a good place to start), I have just looked through the full birth indexes for you from 1883-1888 (inc)
Snd here are all the Maud Blunt's born in those years. One of these must be yours - unless the age on the marriage cert was more than a few years out, oR she changed her name between birth and marriage, of course:
Jan/Feb/Mar 1884 Maud Elizabeth Maidstone 2a 719
Ap/May/Jun 1884 MAud Reading 2c 368
Jul/Au/Sep 1884 Maud Mary Tonbridge 2a 679
J/F/M 1885 Maud Hendon 3a 153
O/N/D 1885 MAud Pontypool 11a 129
J/F/M 1886 MAud Ada Birmingham 6d 144
J/f/M 1887 MAud Woolwich 1d 1277
A/M/J 1887 MAud Louise Birmingham 6d 195
My initial thought is that the Maud Elizabeth is the most likely because she has the middle name, same as is given at the marriage, but this would mean the age at marriage was out - she would actually have been 26 - was she older than her husband to be, in which case she might have 'lost' a couple of years - I have seen that several times before if the bride does not like to appear older than her hubby.
It is a case of either she doctored her age a bit, or she invented a middle name!

Hi Liz,
I wondered about that, but I am pretty sure that Maud E appears on genesconnected so I have contacted the tree holders to see if the spouses name matches. I am still waiting to here about that.
My gut feeling is still with Maud from Woolwich. Are you able to check 1891 census and see if there is a middle initial given?
Best Regards

Sorry, not able to check 1891,
But I have been through full death index for you 1883-1891, to weed out from the births any Maud's that died in infancy.
There is a death of Maud age 0, in Hendon area, in J/F/M 1885,
so that Hendon one can be ruled out.
(Looking at the list I typed for you I see typed Holborn, sorry it is Hendon, I will go back and modify!)
By the way did you check marriage cert to see age of groom?
-
Have checked my London index for 1891 . The only Maud is Maud M.

Checked 1891 and can only find 3 Maude Blunts of abt correct age in England
Maud/e Blunt
Age 5 b. Berks reading, Living in Oxford as a boarder with Butter family
Age 6 b. Chesterfield Derbys, living in Chester with hammond family
Age 7 b. London, living in Nothampton with 62 yr old widowed Gran
Strangley none have them have a mother with them.
The other problem is the name can be transcribed as Blund, Blount -to name a few -i haven't checked variations
If you require full census for any of above please ask
Suz

To answer two questions raised by liz and suz.
Liz, The groom was 35 and a widower when Maude married.
Suz, The Maud age 5 living in Oxford with the Butter family is interesting. I would be very grateful if you could let me have the full entry for that one please. That would tie in with the bmd index for Ap/May/Jun 1884 Maud Reading 2c 368.
Thanks again.

The image (to me) reads as Butter, it is transcribed as Butler -it could be either.
