Post by: paulr_1 on Tuesday 24 April 07 21:29 BST (UK)
Hello,

I am researching the name "Pickthall" mainly in Westmorland, Cumbria, Durham and Yorkshire. I have information to share and would be most interested to be contacted by anyone researching this name.

Hi Paul,
I am interested in Clarence William Pickthall born 1911 Durham Auckland, in birth registry mothers maiden name Pickthall, he married Annie Nevison in Auckland District 1934 and had a daughter. He died in Durham in 1995.
Heres hoping you "know" him.

Hi calm waters

Clarence is not known to me unfortunately, but I have researched many Pickthalls. "My" folks come from the Kendal area and migrated to the North East and settled in Houghton-le-Spring, Co. Durham - not a million miles away from Auckland. I have indexed all the BMDs for Pickthalls 1837-1983. I see Clarence was born in Q4 1911, married in the 1930's to "AN", as per your post. Are you aware of any other Co. Durham Pickthalls?

Kind regards,

Paul     post edited by moderator living person

Hi Paul,
He was my Grandad.  I am afraid that I never knew him. My mum never spoke about him either. Looked on the 1901 census once when I had access to it but found nothing. I don't know any other Pickthalls. Thanks anyway for the quick reply.

Hi Caln04,

Do you know his parents names and did you find them on the 1901? I have access if you need help.

Cheers,

Paul

Hola Paul,  (i'm living abroad)
Just realised that as born 1911 he wouldn't be on there! No I have no other details about him at all, was just hoping really that you had his parents.

Hi Paul,

My Pickthall family were based around Thwaites, Millom, Cumberland and Ulverston (I think!) at the end of the 1700s. Any connections?

Hi Hannah - what were the names of your Pickthalls and what time frame(s)? I have connections to Kendal mainly, but also to Ulverston.

Kind regards,

Paul

Hi Paul,

I have a Mary Pickthall born in Colton, Ulverston, in c1800 who I think was the daughter of George Pickthall and perhaps Betty Gibson, who married in 1799, Ulverston. Mary, however, married in Thwaites, Millom, Cumberland in 1824 and worked as Grocer in Ulverston. Not sure if i'm on the right track, as there seems to be an awful lot of Pickthalls in the Ulverston area around that time!!

Kind Regards,
Hannah

Hello Paul,
My husbands mother was Irene Pickthall from Scorton, Lancashire. Her father was Fred Pickthall and his father Richard. Richards father was Ralph Pickthall born 1829 in Barbon, Westmorland. Ralph was also known as Ralph Allpike and was recorded as such on the 1851 census. He registered all his children as Allpike. I know there was a Ralph Pickthall in Kendal around the time our Ralph was in Scorton, Lancashire who was also know as Allpike. I think both Ralphs may have been cousins because I think the Kendal Ralph was born in Dent and I believe that my Ralphs father John Pickthall was born in Dent in 1793 the son of Henry Pickthall and Elizabeth IGI(I have not found a marriage for Henry and Elizabeth near enough to 1793 for it to be their marriage). John Pickthall married Agnes Croft in 1818 at Kirkby Lonsdale and died aged c36 in Barbon in 1831. John and Agnes had Henry 1819, John 1820, Thomas 1825, George born 1829 and Elizabeth born 1832 all in Barbon. I base my belief that John was born in Dent on the fact that he names his first born son Henry and only daughter Elizabeth. I think Elizabeth died in infancy both Ralph and Thomas moved to the Scorton area in Lancashire but I'm not sure about Henry, John and George.
There was a Joseph Pickthall in Kendal eary 1800's known as Jossie Hornpike, a potter and vetinary surgeon.
I wonder why the Allpike, Hallpike and Hornpike? In 1841/51 Agnes and her sons were various forms of Hallpike.
Regards
MAK

Hi I hope this comes to the right person.  My great grandfather is Clarence William and was married to Anne Nevison.  They had several daughters together in County Durham one of which moved away and I never met
