Title: CAMBORNE Squash Courts Final Word
Post by: toby webb on Wednesday 25 April 07 17:02 BST (UK)
Can anyone tell me if the war memorial names are on a web site and if the Camborne United Methodist Church still stands.
Many thanks.

Hi Toby,

I've been Googling to try to identify which church you might be referring to, as I have often passed a very imposing Methodist Church known as the Pink Palace at the top of Trelowarren St. This is the Centenary Methodist church, but there is another Wesleyan in Chapel St, Camborne. Have a look at Camborne Town Council's website for a map and pictures of both.
Not much I can offer on the War Memorial, except that it's on Church Lane near St. Martin's Church, and is featured in  Camborne/History in Where I Live page, on bbc.co.uk.

Incidentally, if you're looking for someone associated with Methodists, try http://rylibweb.man.ac.uk/data1/dg/methodist/bio/bioind.html
which gives biographical info on lots of people mentioned in Methodist archives.

Hope this is helpful,
Pixie

Maybe the chapel which are looking for was the Trelowarren Street United Methodist Church which is now an indoor market.

Thanks to you both for your efforts. In fact I was in Camborne on Sunday and saw many possible places. The 2 Wesleyan chapels, one of which is the pink building, I have rejected and my favourite at the moment is a derelict chapel that was recently the Camborne Squash Courts in North Parade.  Do either of you recognise the building I am referring to? As for the war memorial, which is in the churchyard, it states that the names are displayed inside the parish church but it was locked. On Sunday! It will have to await my next trip.

A final word. The 25 inch map  Cornwall Western Division
LXIII.9 ,surveyed in 1877, shows clearly that this building in North Parade was a Methodist Chapel ( United).
Many thanks to all who thought about this matter.

Did you ever resolve this. Have you considered the chapel that has been turned into flats at the bottom of Tuckingmill?

Hi Toby,

I only found  this site today so please forgive any mistakes.

The chapel in the photo is definitely Camborne Squash Courts in North Parade. Unfortunately it was demolished only a few months ago.

Dave.

Thanks to you both Strayer & Mistyweather.
No question at all but that the building was the Methodist Chapel in North Parade. Sorry to hear that it has gone. So much character of a town goes when such buildings are pulled down. Let us hope that the replacement will be something of quality and not something that is also pulled down in 25 years time. At least I got there and got my photo before the day of reckoning.
Toby.

This may be of interest. I have just come across a book of photographs with interesting texts.
'Camborne' by David Thomas reprinted 2012. On page 56 is a photograph of the interior of the chapel. T

The chapel was demolished and flats have been built and in fact some tower over cottages.
A couple of old houses were knocked down and that made it a larger site.
If you search for North Parade, Camborne  you may be able to see what has been built on the site.

Thanks Maryanne. I have just driven down North Parade in my Google limousine and see at least some memories remain with the naming of Chapel Walk Mews. T

The buildings fronting the road with a pavement look like houses but in fact are flats!
There is a least another block of flats behind the coloured flats.
