Title: Irish ancestors!!!!
Post by: njh on Thursday 02 December 04 15:07 GMT (UK)
Any help or guidance on this would be appreciated.......

I know that 3 sets of ancestors came from ireland as the english census info state that they were born in ireland.

But I have looked on irish origins and other sites but have no idea how I can find them in ireland and find out where they came from exactly.

I have William Traynor/Trainor born abt 1855 and his wife Catherine Hillen born around the same time.   They had their first child in UK in 1877 and think they must have married in ireland as I can't find any english records.

I also have a Helena Fiztgerald born aroud 1859 with a father called JOhn Fitzgerald.

I don't know when they came to england so i can't get any further back - I would love to go to ireland and search church records but until I know whereabouts...............

Anyone can you help?

I've having the same problem with my g.g.grandparents
although I do know that they came to England between
1849(when 1st child born in Ire.) and 1853(2nd.born in
Eng.)
Where did they disembark, why settle in the
Blackcountry,how did they travel there?

Hi,

njh you are in a better position than jacquelineve as if they married around 1876 or so in Ireland, their marriage should be registered so you can find it in the indexes with the less common surnames you have. These are available at the GRO in Dublin or on film at your local FHL.

Hi njh
Here are a couple of things which might help to narrow it down.  This is a site where you can search to see what counties the two surnames appear in together in the Griffiths Valuations (1848-64)
http://scripts.ireland.com/ancestor/surname/index.cfm
When I looked for Traynor and Hillen it mentions Armagh, Belfast city and Down.

You could also search for instances of John Fitzgerald in Griffiths.  I found two  in Armagh (Armagh and Keady) alone.

If you manage to narrow it down enough, a visit to the records office may be in order.  I know for a fact that many parish records are NOT on LDS.  My lot weren't but appeared bold in a the transcription of a set of parish records for Offaly.

It helps to have as many names of parents, siblings etc as possible and to determine the religion.  Try and find any other relatives who came over and search certificates for mention of parents, and christening and marriage witnesses were often relatives too.

It may seem like an impossible search but don't give up hope.  It took me over 3 years to find where in Ireland my lot were from and I discovered it with a lot of lateral thinking and searching and some amazing good luck.  No idea where in N Ireland my McKennas were from though but I will keeep searching.

Good luck.
