Title: Kirkcaldy ??
Post by: Mollydog on Monday 30 April 07 08:03 BST (UK)
I know Kirkcaldy is in Fife, but is there any chance there may be (or may have been) a place in Stirlingshire or around Glasgow with that name or like name?

Regards
Mollydog

Hi Molly

There is only one Kirkcaldy as far as I know. The town in Fife.  I did a check on the Gazeteer just to check if there were any smaller places but none came up.

There is/was the parish of Kirkcaldy and Dysart from 1901 to 1975. This was the same Kirkcaldy.

Regards

Gadget

PS  - Kirkcaldy is pronounce Kirkcoddy  :)

Many thanks Gadget for confirming that.  I was really hoping there might have been another Kirkcaldy somewhere near Glasgow so I could join a missing ancestor, but alas there is no hope on that one!

Thanks

Thanks Tom

It's all to do with a Canadian WW1 record in which John Menzie(s) lists his next of kin as Marion Menzie of Kirkcaldy, Scotland.  I am trying to ascertain whether it is my John Menzies and if it is, I know for a definite fact that his next of kin lived in Banknock, Stirlingshire at that time, so I was hoping there could be a place around that area called a similar name.

Hi Mollydog,

There are 2 x John Menzies mentioned on local WW1 War Memorials, one in Kilsyth and the other in Bonnybridge. Banknock is in the middle between both places.

The following are the details of each of the Johns, where they're commemorated and any other relevant details I could find.

MENZIES, John, Pte., Royal Army Medical Corps, 17th Field Ambulance, died 25.11.1917, age 24
Service No: 73953, son of John & Margaret Menzies, Clune, Bonnybridge
Comm. at: Rocquigny-Equancourt Road British Cemetery, Manancourt, III.A.13
Comm. at: Bonnybridge War Memorial, Stirlingshire

MENZIES, John, Guardsman, Scots Guards, died 24.01.1920
Service No: 5018
Comm. at: Kilsyth Cemetery, 2nd Extension, Grave 1006
Comm. at    Kilsyth War Memorial
(British War Memorial Project have a photo of his gravestone)

You could also check out this site:  http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com

You have to register before you can do a search, but it's free. After you register, scroll down to 'Cemeteries and Memorials', go to the foot of this page, then enter the words, Scottish Memorials. You will then be directed to a kind of sister site called 'Scottish War Memorial Discussion Forum'

There is a thread in the Fife section (Civic Memorials) on Kirkcaldy War Memorial and the person who's thread it is says to contact him for further info.

Hi mollydog,

I did a search on ancestry.co.uk for a Marion Menzies, got 3 results in area, 2 in the Kirkintilloch area, (is the place like Kirkcaldy?, it is near Banknock) and 1 in Camelon. the Camelon was born in 1840 would have been in 70's at time of WW1, the other 2 were born 1804 and 1807.

Thanks Anne, but the John Menzies I am trying confirm did not die until 1970.  His parents were also John and Margaret.  Why why is everybody called the same names!!!

Thanks Tom, Kirkintilloch?? maybe.  I may investigate it a bit more as it certainly starts with 'kirk".

Thanks again to all.  Everyone is always willing to help out on this site.

Mollydog, I would like to chat with you in a private message. I am new to the posting area. Do you know how I can contact you via email.

I was at the farm or next door to the farm that Home Child (British Home Child/BHC) John Menzies was at while he was in Ontario.

I also have a photograph of a 1914-1918 Honour Roll that has your John's name on.

I would like to get and share more about this boy.

You can contact me privately through this site, but it has been many years since I have done so and I am not sure how you do it. Somebody on the site will know.

Also, my genealogy is all packed away and I will have to get it out and refresh my memory. I only found out about John Menzies through researching and what information my grandmother could remember about him. After he was shipped off to Canada as a small boy, he was never seen or heard of again.

What would you like to know?

If you look just to the left of this post you should see a little GREEN thing that looks like a sheet of paper I think you just click on that and send me a private message. I think I just sent you one by doing this.

I hope it works.
