Title: Death at Stirling District Asylum 1887
Post by: Albert Myers on Monday 30 April 07 16:06 BST (UK)
My great grandparents Henry and Margaret Field(Morrow) were married in Dumbarton in 1875 and appear in the 1881 census. Margaret Field's age at her time of marriage is given as 24 which gives her a D.O.B. c.1851. Henry and family moved to Belfast c.1887 where they settled. I have been unable to find any record of Margarets death in N.Ireland and must conclude that the death recorded at Stirling District Asylum 6 May 1887 is that of my g.grandmother. The age is given as 37 years which is about right. Why she would have died at this location is something of a mystery,as it is some distance from Dumbarton and not exactly convient to Belfast. Is it possible that hospital records could be found to help identify this lady and help me put the matter to rest ?. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hello Albert and welcome to Rootschat :)

I couldn't find much on this from a quick search, but the page linked below

http://web.ukonline.co.uk/members/tom.paterson/places/stat3_larb.htm

shows that the Stirling District Mental Asylum at Larbert served the counties of Stirling, Dunbarton and Clackmannan. So although it was a long way from Dumbarton, it does look as though it would be the facility to which a Dumbarton patient would have been referred.

Hope that helps (a little!)

Anna

Hi Albert

Were there no parent's details included on the 1887 death that could help in verifying this Margaret as your g grandmother?

Regards.

The details of the death of Margaret Field in the asylum in Stirling is as follows:

Margaret Field married to Henry Field, May 6th 1887 at 6am.  Stirling District Asylum.  aged 37 (parents details are totally missing) Cause of death was Phthisis (TB)...

I think that the probablility is that it was a name of the hospital at that time...

Hope that helps a little

Best Wishes

I have 2 old hand written ledgers Stirling District Board of control, Register of Lunatics in Lunatic wards of poorhouses, and Stirling district Lunacy board Minute book of Visiting Committee, the latter starts March 1890, and gives a facinating insight in the day to day life in the Asylum, and the first one gives the name of the patients, both male and female, date of admission, parish of residence, parish of settlement, rate of maintenance, date of discharge or death. and remarks. I think they will be the earliest books you will ever fin about the hospital, the first dates of admissions 1s about 1871 as far as i see,  there are a number of inmates from Dumbarton listed, You are welcome to have a look if its any help, i live in Larbert, thanks.

Hi crudenbayboy,

Is there any chance that your ledgers mention George William Kirton?  He was in the asylum at Larbert some time between 10 April 1894, when he arrived in Glasgow from New York, and 4 May 1894 when he was sent down to Sunderland where he had been born.  He was married to Mary Donaldson Hunter of Alva so presumably had followed her back from the US where they married - he had been in an asylum in Hartford, Connecticut (general paralysis of the insane).  Just not sure how welcoming his in-laws were....

Asking a favor for a lookup.  I have found whom I believe was my great grandmother.  I am posting the information that I found at Ancestry.com; however, when I go to the listings for the 1881 Census for the Stirling Poorhouse/Asylum I don't see her name listed.  Can you give me any of the information on her that is contained in your books?  Deeply appreciate the favor if possible.

Sincerely,
Heather Fyfe Fitzgibbon

You're probably going to have to go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk to do searches,  and then order the birth, death and/or marriage certificates.  You cannot see images of the more recent certificates online due to privacy issues.  It costs  £6 for 30 credits and you can order more at a time if you think you'll use them.  Ancestry.com doesn't have access to the Scottish records, but you can find transcriptions of Scottish censuses from 1841 to 1891 on Ancestry.

Good luck!

Hi Claire,
Is Fleming, Rebecca's married name ?
No Rebecca Fleming (with Soundex ON) is listed as a birth in Scotland in 1885 on 'scotlandspeople'.
What was her husband's forename(s) and surname?
What were her parents full names?
With this information, I should be able to help.
Best to you
DDJJAKE

I don't suppose you have ever come across anything referring to a lady Mary Mcisaac, alias Walker, daughter of William Mcisaac, Tailor of Gargunnock. He admitted his daughter, a servant,  to Larbert asylum in the 1860's , reason given "immorality and insobriety". She was also in Woodylee asylum,Lenzie  and  had come from the poorhouse. I have her case records and transfer details. Mary died at Stirling asylum in the 1880's. I wondered if you had ever come across her name in the records before? I would be grateful for any information. Thank you.

I am looking for any info on a woman called Mary McIsaac, alias Walker, originally from Gargunnock, Stirlingshire. Died in Larbert Asylum 1889. Trying to contact Cruden Bay Boy in case he has seen any ref to her in the records he has. Fingers crossed as I have hit a brick wall. Already have some records but the ones mentioned sound great!

Also  school logbooks. Anyone have any idea which school might be closest to vicinity of Park Road/ Bucchleuch St and Cambridge Street, Glasgow in 1890/1900's please? Schoolmasters name was James McIsaac.

Does anyone know if police records for Station nearest to Stockwell St, Glasgow survive?
Any help appreciated, Thanks

Hi DDJJake, Thank you for taking the trouble to send that. Yes, I  do have it.  I have John Robertson's birth cert thank you.  His parents did marry and had another son Peter but he may have died before the age of five. The father, james Robertson also died in his early 20's from acute meningitis. They lived in the slum area of Glasgow, Crown Street, and he died at Glasgow Infirmary. His child john Robertson became the local Postman  back in Stirling.

Re: Mary McIsaac snr. wife of William McIsaac, Master tailor. I have all the B/M/D's for the family and she was the daughter of James buchanan, a master shoemaker and Catherine McLean who's father was Angus McLean of Bute. I actually have many records from the poor law register for the family prior to this generation.  After 30 years of doing this , I lose track on how many documents I have accumulated!

The only enigma seems to have been Mary McIsaac jnr, the one who ended up in the asylum. I have many records about her, but when I saw the post by "Cruden Bay Boy", I thought I might be able to find some additional info, but I have had no luck in contacting him. I thought the records might shed some light on her life. I do have many detailed records from the asylum and poorhouse, and of course the census and BMD's but early census do not indicate she was insane or had any affliction, so I just wanted to find out more. Her father took her to the asylum when she was only 23. He stated that none of the family were ever insane and that she had had three previous bouts from which she had recovered.  He said he thought the cause was "Intemperance and Immorality"! which doesn't sound very good. I wondered if she may have ahd a child. but have found no evidence of that. After she left her family in Gargunnock, and before entering the asylum, I found a Mary McIsaac in the employment of a Surgeon in Perth, which may have been her as some asylum records say that she said she was a Domestic Servant.  She was once arrested in Glasgow "acting insanely" and I think she may have been trying to find her siblings. Both her brothers attended Glasgow Free Church seminary and her sisters Catherine Robertson and Jane Walker both lived there. It would have been quite a way to get there from Gargunnock in her mental condition. Some census details mention that her sister Jane's husband William Walker was blind.  I can't think why Mary would use the alias of Walker when that was actually her sisters married name.  Maybe it was just the first thing that popped into her head.  Unless I can locate the Cruden Bay Boy guy who said he had some records, I think I may have found out all I a going to.  I should think myself lucky I have all her medical records etc from the Asylums, but we always want more don't we?!  Thank you very much for sending the info  .
Kind Regards
Sheila

I have a Matilda Smith who was living at the asylum in 1901. She was the youngest female listed on the 1901 census at the asylum, she was 19 years old. In 1911 she was back at home with her family but had no occupation which was odd for a 29 year old (the family was not wealthy).

Her parents were Matilda Madden and Patrick Smith and the family was from Dumbarton. Her parents both passed away before 1920 so I'm wondering what happened to Matilda. She had 8 siblings (Agnes, John, Elizabeth, Patrick, Edward, Bridget, Mary Ann and Margaret) but at least 4 of them immigrated to the US (the last four listed).

Scotlandspeople did not turn up a death record for Matilda Smith which is strange. She was born 1 Dec 1881 in Dumbarton.

Any ideas?

Since posting  the nudge to memory for David Robertson the Gardiner & farm Overseer,

I found that at 1891 Census he was at The Daviot Branch Asylum near Inverurue
Aberdeenshire.

He is listed as Stewaer in charge, his wife Ann as Matron
Daur Jane Helen al Lunatie or Attendant dau Ann as Housemaid
Daur Agnes as Sewing Maid both Domestic
and sons david W , John K and Arthur Wm as Scholars.
David was listed as employer Ann as employee but none of the daughters show as employed.

I've since found a death record for Matilda- she died in 1969 in Larbert, Stirlingshire. Naturally this makes me think maybe she was at Bellsdyke... since its so recent I can't view it on scotlandspeople. Hmm!

My GG Grandfather died of TB at Larbert in 1915, aged 38.

His young son had been killed some time before in an accident for which he blamed  himself, so by today's standards he probably would have been clinically depressed... he was still at home in 1911 so would have been admitted some time after that.  He lived in Clyde Bank.

If anyone has access to asylum records I would be very interested in learning more...
