Hi,
Found John Windley (from Chigwell essex abt. 1842) in the 1871 census: Private RMS I (what does this mean?). Was he on the Pylades? Could anyone tell me when he joined the RN and when he left?
Thank you for your time.

Since you say that he was in the Navy, yet give his occuation as Private RMS I , I would hazard a Guess that he could be in the Royal Marines. (Otherwise would he not be a Seaman?)

If you look at th edescription of the enumeration information for the Royal Navy in the 1871 census it tells you where the ship was on census day etc.
You will have to apply for records through Kew for further information on his career.
Ruth
Ps have saved the enumeration description - if you want it send me your email address via PM.
