Title: MADGETT Family
Post by: tricia1 on Friday 04 May 07 07:49 BST (UK)
I am trying to trace a John Madgett who lived in Thrandeston most of his adult life, was buried there.  He was born approximately 1753.

Any help with the Madgetts would be appreciated.

Hello!
I'm researching my family tree and in so doing, came across your posting here.  My maiden name is Madgett and the furthest back I have got on the Madgett side is John Madgett who was born in 1753 & died in 1835 in Thrandeston, so I guess it's probably the same line that you're researching. (He married Elizabeth Gibbon).
Do we share a link? Have you found out anything more about him?

Thank you

Hello
I was also born a Madgett and I come from John Madgett born c 1753.
Unfortunately I haven't gone any futher back than this, but it's not without trying.  He just seems not to show up anywhere.

What Madgett are you from?  I would be interested in sharing our information.

Hi Tricia,
As far as I can tell, John Madgett & Elizabeth Gibbon had about 8 children and I am descended from their son George who married Phoebe Cobb. If you PM me, I can share my info wth you.  Likewise, I'd be interested to learn what you know. It's a shame that we can't get back further, especially when it's such an uncommon name, it ought to be easier!

john Madgett b. Thrandeston  bur. 4/1/1835 age 82 Thrandeston

also:  Elizabeth Madget bur. 15/3/1801  dau. of John & Eliz. Thrandeston

Diddy, thank you very much for the burial dates you provided. I had year dates but not exact dates and they link in perfectly. You mention that there were more Madgetts but not in Thrandeston-  my line moves from Thrandeston to Diss. If you had more Madgett info from that area I would be delighted. Many thanks indeed for your help

Hi,

I found this this chat whiles searching any information on George Madgett who married Phobe Cobb. Other then their names I have no other information and am looking for any details about them - Birth dates, parents details etc.

Reading this thread I have gathered that George's parents were John Madgett and Elizabeth Gibbon, have you managed to go further back?????

I am from their son Williams line (who married Ann Swootman) and information about the Swootman family would also be appreciated too!

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello GDean
George Madgett married Phoebe Cobb 25th May 1820 Diss. George was born circa 1791 died 17th March 1849 Diss.  Phoebe was born circa 1800 died 4th May 1887 Diss.

I do not believe that this George's parent was John Madgett.
He had a George born 12th August 1791 in Thrandeston Suffolk, but who married Elizabeth Meen 22nd December 1813.

There seems to be two Madgett families in and around the Diss and Suffolk border.

Both trees seem to go back easily to 1780's, but cannot join them together anywhere.

I have looked for many years to find where  John Madgett 1753 came from, but without any luck.

Hope this helps.

I am a descendant from the Madgett family. I live in Ontario, Canada. What I can tell you is,  Gordon Madgett who was born on February 11, 1891 is my great-grandfather who was married to Winifred Markle and William Madgett who was born on May 3, 1862 is my great-grandfather who was married to Sarah Catharine Duck.
I am trying to do my family ancestry and I'm getting lost past William. I was first trying to locate William's siblings and try to move forward from there. I am finding I'm going around in circles. I can't seem to get a direct link.
I have found John Madget who was married to Elizabeth Gibbon and from there I found they had 8 children. From that point that is where the confusion starts for me.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Great to hear from you. I have not looked at it for several months so I can't remember the details but I have a database and all the information at home (I am currently at work) so will dig it all out this evening and get back to you.

Hi again,
I just found  in my office a copy of the family tree and I have no details which match yours... other then the john madgetrt and the Elizabeth Gibbon which I am now in doubt are related to me...though they are all from the same area so must link up somehow. it seems your dates sit between my generations. I don't have a William born in 1862 (1843, died 1843 and 1856 who married a Sarah SKinner) so I too am very confused. As pointed out there seems to be sevral madgett families at the same time.

What is the link between your George and Elizabeth Gibbon/John Madgett?
I have that Elizabeth Gibbon/John Madget had 8 children, one was Goerge Madgett (1791) m. Phobe Cobb (1800ish) who had  William (1820). Now there is confusion if this William married a Elizabeth Meen (which case they are not related to me) or if this William married a Ann Swootman and had 10 children. I am pretty sure that I am the William from Cobb married Ann Swootman as I got this information from the Madgett family that still run the bike shop in Diss...but I am happy for evidence to prove otherwise.

Do have a membership to any of the census sites? I do so let me know if you need anything looked up!

I know that I have fund out a bit more since I printed this family tree so I will check tonight.

Gill

Hi Gill,
Thank you for replying back to me. The information that I have found is John Madget who was born 1814 in England and died in Ontario 1904 was married to Harriet Madget. I cannot find any information on Harriet.  John's parents were Stephen Madget born 1783 and died 1874 was married to Anne Fuller born 1815 and died 1885. I still don't know if I'm following the right line. I can only go by John and Harriet Madget as they were noted on William's marriage certificate to Sarah Catharine Duck.
I have noticed the Madget families like to use the same first names and that is what confusing me if I have the right person. I am part of Ancestry website in Canada. I can go on the one for England but I cannot open them as my subscription doesn't allow me to do this.
That is where I stand right now.

Hi,
I have all the people you mentioned on my database, Stephen Madget was the brother of George Madgett which is my line. In all there were 8 children.
There is some debate on who their parents were as there is a John Madgett who married a Elizabeth Gibbon and had a George born in 1971 (and you will see from this trail of emails that this George is thought to have married an Elizabeth Meen) but there is also a census entry in 1841 which has a George Madgett also born in 1971 living with a older generation of George madgett and Phoebe Madgett. I am certain that I am from a George Madgett who married a Phoebe but I don't know who these other people in the household are as no one on my tree currently meets has these names with the stated birth dates, but they could be uncle/aunty. I am currently trying to track down information on John and Elizabeth to try and sort out the two families. I will let you know how I go!

As for your John who married Harriet, he was born in 1814, I have him baptised on the 4th Feb 1816 in Wortham Suffolk. His father Stephen was born the 3rd child 8 in 1783 in Thrandeston, Suffolk and married Ann Fuller on the 6th Jan 1807 by the Minister George Betts in the presence of Martha Nunn and Robert Madgett (another brother). In the notes I am reading I have no other detail on Harriet but I will dig through all the paper notes to see if I can find more. I also have all access to the UK records so I will see what I find there.

Where about in Ontario are you? My best friend lives in Ottawa. I am in Canberra Australia so it is nice to see we have made it to many places around the world! There is a large group of midgets in New Zealand too but I am get to work out how they link in.

Keep in touch

Gill

Hi Gill,
I am in Mississauga which is west of Toronto.  I have lived here all my life. I know there are two areas the Madgett family resided. They are Peel and York(suburb of Toronto). My side resided in the York area.
What I can tell you about George Madget born 1791 and died 1849 was married to Phoebe Cobb who was born 179 and died 1887. I'm guessing they had a son named William who was born in Diss,Norfolk 1821 and died in the same area in 1902.
It looks to me the families in Peel and the families in the York area do have ties. I'm just trying to guess how that tie began, if that makes sense.
I will keep searching.

Will see what I can find in my records this evening and let you know!!

On another topic, does anyone know about a Madgett who was a convict and sent to Botany Bay sometime in the 1900's who had a son who came to englad to try and claim land in Australia that may have belonged to this convict?
It was mentioned in notes I have from a Frank Swootman Madgett.

Cheers,
Gill

Hello
Thank you for offering to look up John Madgett in your records.

I have had a look for convicts sent to Botany Bay, but I have nothing for the 1900's.

If I find anything I will let you know,

I have not been able to find anything yet but I am hoping some other resources will become available next month as part of a fmaily history course I am doing through a university.

I would really like to solve the mystery of the two Georges and who their parents were, John and Elizabeth did not father both of them in the same year...unless this is one George with two lives, not sure how I wulod prove that!

Hello
I have just been looking at my information (gathered many years ago) for George's

I have these entries. George Madgett son of John and Elizabeth Madgett her maiden name was Meen on 12/08/1791

the other George  born approx. 1791 who married Phoebe Cobb

I also have a George Madgett baptised  13/12/1787 Diss Fathers name given as Matchett. Perhaps the last two could be the same people.

I come from the Thrandeston Madgetts, my maiden name was Madgett.

I used to write to someone named Dean in Australia many years ago - could you be the same person?

Will keep browsing my records.

Regards

Tricia

Hi Tricia,
Were you writing to a John Dean in Canberra in the 1980's? That is my dad and he has passed on all the letters from a Patricia. Is that you?

Madgett was his mum maiden name.

Hello
Yes I am the Patricia that he wrote to!!  Glad he passed on his records to you and it is nice that you have carried on the researching.

I have been looking at some bits on the Madgett pages where someone was asking about a John that married a Harriet.  Well I was looking at Stephen Madgett and Ann Fuller,  I have them having one son John who I have as marrying a Mary. This John died in Gravesend in 1883. So didn't go to Canada. They had three sons William John and Stephen.   Have I this recorded correctly?

They all appeared on a 1851 and 1861 census that I have copies of.

Perhaps it is this John that was born c. 1843. that went to Canada?  I agree with so many of them using the same name we all get so muddled...

Regards
Patricia
