Title: 71/61/51 Census Lookup Request - PAMPHILON
Post by: soulsister on Monday 07 May 07 09:11 BST (UK)
Could someone please look up this family on the census' mentioned:

James Pamphilon b) 1820, Hertford
Cecilia Pamphilon (maiden name unknown) Wife b) abt 1820

children are:

sarah Anne pamphilon b) 1845 Herftord
Thomas Pamphilon b) 1850 Hertford
Augusta Annie Pamphilon b) 1852 Hertford (my gt gt gt grandmother)
Lydia Elizabeth Pamphilon b) 1853 Hertford

I know that Sarah Anne married William Holloway in 1874, Lydia Elizabeth married Charles Crouch (a widow) in 1876 and Thomas married 3 times though i dont know who or when so he may or may not be with the family on the 1871 depending when he first married!

Any help with this would be most appreciated!

Regards

Emma.

This name has been transcribed as Pamphilson and somebody has posted a correction to Pamphilion.

The correction has been posted by a username sueleather from Surrey England on 4/7/2007, presumably this date is americanised and should be 7th April this year.  I've sent a contact detail asking her to check this thread and make contact, fingers crossed.

I've looked at the enumeration districts in 1841, although I don't know the area it seems to me that not all of it is available, only districts 6 and 9 were noted - 6 was almost illegible and 9 said Great Amwell.

It might be a good idea if you were to post a separate look up request for an 1841 look up for the area of Bull Plain and see if anybody has a copy of the original pages, they may be able to find your family that way.

Hi Emma,

I have established from PRs that James Pamphilon married Celia Fowle at Bengeo on 17th June 1844.  I also located the marriages of Thomas to Mary Ann Haines at Cheshunt on 20Oct1816 and James to Elizabeth Sammons at Hertford All Saints on 22Aug1852 and finally the baptism of John s/o Thomas and Elizabeth of Fore Street, Hertford a victualler on 05Apr1852.

Details of these events available if required.

Regards   ...   Peter

Hi Emma - Mary contacted me to ask if I can help.  I have a book called 'Pamphilon - an Essex family' by Michael Coyne which he published himself in 1992.  He had done a lot of work on the various Pamphilon branches over the years and was sure they were all connected.  Unfortunately, I have lost contact with him.  Having had a quick look through the book, he shows a direct link from your branch via White Roothing (or Roding), Widdington and Thaxted, all in Essex, to a Geoffrey Pamphilon who was hanged in Thaxted in 1304!  You and I are linked at Edward born c1572 at Widdington who had various children, including William born c1613 (my ancestor) and Richard born c1617 (your ancestor).  I haven't had a chance to verify any of the information in Mike's book, but I can let you have the list of your direct line if you like for you to work on.  Sue

There are 2 photos in there which are my gt gt gt grandparents, THOMAS MORTON LEWIN and AUGUSTA ANNIE PAMPHILON!! I have the tree going back to the hangings at Thaxted but im trying to get the details for my main line as though i have most names its nice to try and bring them alive i think!!

Which child do you descend from??

I didnt read your message properly, you have already told me who you descend from!

I am interested in following up Augustas siblings and celias line, also the generation before my James Pamphilon. I would be very interested in your line also to add to the tree! Will kindly pass you my own.

Emma.

Hi Emma - I've worked out that we are tenth cousins once removed!  A bit remote, but still related!  I'm part four and that's me at the bottom of page 51; we attach at 19 Edward - I'm via 39 William and you are 40 Richard, I think.

I agree that it's useful to have Mike's research as a starting point, but like you I want to flesh them out a bit.  Let me know how you get on!  Sue

I will definitely let you know how i get on with it and i would hope you will do the same!!

Just been looking for the section 4 p51 you say you are on. The book i have does not go upto p51 for part 4, it ends at p27! I wonder whether we have different books!!

How strange!  Mine looks to be hand-typed with a blue cover and gives a publication date of 1992 - perhaps he had it properly published later?  Anyway, I'm part four (which starts with 19 Edward) and I'm numbered as 58a.  Does that help?

I'm new to all this chat stuff - how do I get your tree and how do I let you have mine?

Sue

Wonderful tree, that's a pretty amazing connection you've made, good luck with the fleshing out the bones.

Hello everyone,

This is my first time on the site. I joined because I am trying to learn about my Pamplin ancestors. My second great-grandmother was Fanetta (Alice) Pamplin who married Samuel Dickey. Her father was Joel Kimmons Pamplin, and he was the son of William Ligon Pamplin. William was born in 1795 in Lunenburg, VA and died in Lincoln County, TN. I see that some Pamplin family trees go all the way back to Geoffrey Paunfilian who was hanged in 1304 in Thaxted, Essex, England. I am amazed that people could get the family history back to far!

I'd be very appreciative if anyone would share information with me. I'm very curious why Geoffrey was hanged and why Robert immigrated to America in 1699.

Thank you very much,
Susan Marie (Surie63)
