Title: Help needed please
Post by: Fisherman on Tuesday 08 May 07 20:19 BST (UK)
I have found a Joseph Christopher Sockett, 474426 12 Ba., London Regiment, who died 9-9-1917 age unknown.   He is obviously one of my lot but I cannot find a birth record for him or any sign of him in 1901.  To confuse matters there are two other Joseph Christophers around at this time , my grandfather (b1874) who was in Hereford and one born 1910.

This is the first military death I've come across so I don't know where to look for his records.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Fisherman

Hi
According to SDGW, Joseph' details are as follows:

12th City of London Battalion (The Rangers)
Name:  Joseph Christopher Sockett
No:  474426
Rank:  Rifleman

Born:  Holmer
Enlisted:  Hereford
Residence:  Hereford
Died:  09/09/1917
How:  Killed in Action:  France and Flanders

Formerly:  1576, R.A.M.C., T.F.

Hope this is of help.  Perhaps he can't be found on the 1901 Census as he might have been serving abroad.

Here is his medal card which you can download for £3.50

A visit to the National Archives at Kew could provide more information of army records.

Once you download his medal card, you could post it here where someone can hopefully give you more information.

From memory there was a William Henry Sockett running the Swansea House of industry in the early 1820s. Any relative? He left a printed account of how he ran the place at the Swansea Museum.

Atom,

That is fantastic.  I had an idea that there was a Hereford link.
I will download the medal card this evening.
Thank you

Bernard
Yes, Henry was the defence barrister for Dick Penderyn.  There is plenty of info regarding his time in Swansea, but he left under a bit of a cloud and his life is a bit sketchy until his death in Bath in 1848.  I am yet to find him in 1841.

Thank you both
Fisherman

From memory the pamphlet is partly an attempt to dispel rumours that he had fiddled the books!

He was appointed 'visitor' in 1818 and carried out that role for 14 years; during which time he singularly failed to submit any accounts!

Well Fisherman!

Not a lot to go on with the MIC.  However he did get two medal as mentioned the Victory and the British medal.
He was not in France and Flanders before January 1916, but that is not to say that he was not participating elsewhere.

The roll number along with the page number is handy if you ever decide to visit TNA to look up the roll and perhaps find out more information on your man.

If you do get a chance to visit Kew, it would also be worthwhile to check-out the War Diary of the 12th City of London Bn (The Rangers) for a synopsis of the events/battle going on at the front around the  time he died.

Hi Anne,

I might be on his trail.
I have a Joseph who would have been 22 at the outbreak of war.
He was living in Homer, Hereford in 1901 and his parents say he was born there.  The only birth registration for a Joseph in 1892 was in Cannock Staffs.
I've sent for the cert in the hope that the parents match up.
I have been told that his parents might have added Christopher at his baptism.

Chris, have you thought about this one (possible spelling error) ???

Birth registration Joseph Christopher SACKETT in the March quarter 1892 Hereford registration district ref. 6a 460 (the ref. might need checking as middle digit not quite clear)

Casalguidi,

It must be him ;D ;D  It must be a spelling error as you said.
I checked 1891 & 1901 and there are no Sacketts in Hereford - it must have been that Shropshire/Herefordshire accent ;D

A bonus - in 1891 I found another part of the family mistranscribed as Sackett in Shropshire.

Thanks
Chris

Hi Anne,

I will.
I'm going to phone Hereford in the morning to check that parents are correct before I order the cert.
Thanks to you and Casalguidi from only having a name from CWGC I now know quite a lot about Joseph Christopher and he no longer "Died Age Unknown"
I will let you know what Hereford has to say.

Chris

Hi Pete

Thanks for that.

I've got back as far as Elizabeth 1738 (Worthen) and her parents so the information will help.

Thanks

Anne & Casalguidi,

I contacted Hereford Registry Office today and they confirmed the surname as Sockett not Sackett as the GRO has.
So he fits neatly into the tree.  I hope that I can get all his records changed to match the facts.

Thank you both very much for your help.
Chris

One problem ;)  When I downloaded his medal card there were 5 other family members on the same sheet 4 of whom I can't identify.  So I will probably be crying for help again.

Good stuff chris, Lucky you  :D,  getting two for the price of one on the MIC, with the possibility of finding some more due to your unusual surname ... that'll should keep you busy for a while.  8)

Hi all. I'm afraid I might be a few years to late, but Joseph Sockett was my grandfather's uncle. I would like to talk to "fisherman" and find out how we are related, rather intrigued. If fisherman is still about and would like to know anymore information we have a few interesting facts. We have a letter he had penned to his wife during the war before he lost his life in battle. The letter is also published online if you search Joseph Sockett Hereford Times. If anyone can help it would be rather appreciated.
