Title: Wilsons of Dunfanaghy, Donegal, Ireland
Post by: vlwilson on Saturday 04 December 04 02:16 GMT (UK)
I'm researching my husband's Wilson family line.  I know his grandfather was Alexander Wilson, born October 12, 1869, in Dunfanaghy, Donegal County, Ireland.  Alexander's parents were William Wilson and Jane Clark(e).  He came to the United States in 1889 and settled in Blair County, Pennsylvania.

Any information or leads would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Vickie Wilson

These Wilsons lived near Dunfanaghy in the townland of Claggan, Horn Head.

Valuation of Tenements 1864
CLAGGAN Lot#6 (Horn Head) James Wilson had house, offices and land. The buildings were the highest value in the townland being more than twice the average valuation.

The children I have for William and Jane (Clark/e) Wilson

James Henry born 2 Jul 1866
Alexander born 12 Oct 1869
Thomas born 7 Dec 1871 [died?]
Mary born 26 Jun 1874
William born 1 Jan 1877
Thomas born 26 Jan 1878
Jane born 2 Jul 1880

I don’t have any other details to hand at the moment but if you’d like to share info please get back to me.

 All the best
                  Henry

NB Sorry but I had previously mis-typed the birth date of James Henry
       The above is now correct.

Re: Wilsons of Dunfanaghy

Does anyone know how far the Wilsons of Dunfanaghy go back?  Benjamin Wilson (1721-1788) was the younger brother of a Thomas Wilson (b.1701) from Leeds, where the family was very prominent.

Their father, Major Wilson, was a wealthy merchant of cloth who did trade with Russia.  The oldest son, John (b1699) was at the Court of Peter the Great.  The second son, Thomas was in charge of his father's ship which took cloth to Russia.

According to Benjamin's diary, on returning to England, Thomas stopped at Dunfanaghy to 'divert himself ' in the town, neglected to take care of the ship which was wrecked 'due to his carelessness'.  He stayed there out of fear of his father's wrath, married a local woman with a good fortune and they had several chidren who also married well.  The family in England never saw him again.

Benjamin Wilson went to London where he became a famous portrait painter and electrical scientist.  He was a member of the Royal Society and his painting of Benjamin Franklin, with whom he also had a scientific disagreement, is the oldest painting in the White House today.  He was also Painter to George 111, after Hogarth.

His son, Sir Robert Wilson, faught Napoleon, was a Member of Parliament for Southwark for 15 years, and ended his career as Governor of Gibraltar.
I am related to the family, through another brother of Benjamin's -- Joseph, (b1707) and our side of the family migrated to Australia in 1837.

Would love to hear from anyone with more information.

Hi DMW,

I have no information on your family but I am interested in " Dunfanaghy" it was not a very big place and I am sure that every one new one another.

The families that I am looking for are McNutt, Richardson, McKinly & Culbert all had some conection with the Dunfanaghy Prestbyterian Church.

If you have come accross any of these names I would appreciate it if you could let me know.

Thank you Matty :)

RE: VWilson's posting and Annraoi's posting

I am searching for information about my great, great grandmother Eliza Clark.  She was born in Ireland around 1838, possibly in  Belfast,  but came to the USA and married in 1860.

She had a sister named Jane in Ireland who married a Wilson.  I have reason to believe that Jane's husband was named William Wilson.  I am not certain at this point where Jane Clark Wilson and William Wilson lived, but Jane and Eliza's mother, Meary, wrote letters to Eliza from "Horn head" and "Claggan".

As this is near Dunfanaghy I wondered if these could be the same Wilson's as you are mentioning.

In addition.  Eliza received a letter from a nephew Alex Wilson, written in 1894.  He addressed the letter from Blair Co, Pennsylvania.

From the letters I know that Eliza and Jane Clark Wilson had a brother named Henrey, and a sister named Marry.  They also had an Uncle James and Aunt Jane.

To further confuse things, Eliza's mother signed the letters "I remain your mother to deth --Meary Alcorn".  I know that Eliza was named Clark when she married in 1860, so I don't know where the name Alcorn came from unless perhaps her mother was widowed and remarried.

Any information on the Alcorn, Clark or Wilson's of the Claggan, Horn Head area that you think might be related would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You!
Lisa

DNA testing of Wilson blood has confirmed that the Wilson family is from Donegal county Ireland, 2 matches: one in Canada whose grandfather came from Donegal county Ireland and another in Donegal county Ireland both lines go back to about 1810.

DNA test:

Our ancestor is Richard Wilson (Willson)
His son Robert was born in 1765, speculation wants to place Robert's birth in North Carolina, but oral history says they moved from Staunton Virginia after he was born.

We are USA descendants of a Dunfanaghy family of William Warnock and his wife, Mary Wilson.  Their son John Wilson Warnock emigrated to the USA in 1846 and settled in Clarion County, PA.  John died in 1878 and the family is well documented.  John's Dunfanaghy wife was Elizabeth Alcorn, who died in 1845, leaving him a widower with 6 children.  This was what prompted him to emigrate.

Several trips to Donegal have not found this Alcorn, but the Warnock family there were members of Dunfanaghy Presbyterian Church.  We have the baptismal records of several Warnock's from there.

Would like to make contact with either this Wilson or Alcorn family descendants.  Much of this can be seen at our online site:

Thanks so much,
Bruce Warnock

Not sure if we're related but I'm looking for info about James & Jane Wilson and brother Nathaniel. James was born 1825 and married Jane Gallagher in 1849. I found this online but can't find anything in Ireland.

 WILSON
"From History of Scott County, Iowa 1882 Chicago: Interstate Publishing Co."

James Wilson, farmer and stock-raiser, Le Claire, Iowa, was born in Donegal, Ireland, in 1825, and came to the United States in 1855 and located in Le Claire Township, where he has followed farming since. In 1849 married Jane Galligher; she was born in Ireland. There was a family of 13 children, nine of whom are living, viz.: William, Susan, Nathaniel, Thomas, Sarah J., Andrew, John, Margaret and Mary E. Mrs. Wilson died in 1872. She was a member of Seceeders church. Mr. Wilson has 320 acres of land valued at $75 per acre in Le Claire Township, and 160 acres in Poweshick Co., Iowa, valued at $35. Nathaniel Wilson, deceased, a brother of James Wilson, was born in the same county; came to Scott County in an early day and was among the earliest settlers of the county. Through the influence of Nathaniel, the large family of James Wilson was induced to come to this county and settle in Le Claire Township. Nathaniel Wilson at his death had accumulated a fine property. He died in 1878.

Orville Wilson (d Jan 16, 2010) was my cousin.  We were collaborating over our family line.  I seem to have come to an impasse in my research.  One road on my research shows my great-great grandfather (Matthew Wilson) to be born in Donegal Ireland in 1811.  Another road shows Matthew to be born here in New Brunswick, Canada in 1811.  I have located a Census of New Brunswick (1851) showing Matthew to be in Stilesville, Westmorland County, New Brunswick at the age of 41 yrs.

Obviously, one of these roads is incorrect.  Does anyone know for sure where he was born and how did he end up here in New Brunswick 40 years later?  Also, could you please identify his parents and any potential siblings.

I do have his local genealogy from his marriage to Margaret Lutz (Lutes) on 13 Dec 1832, and they produced 9 children via that union.  I would be delighted to share notes and fill in the blanks for my (hopefully) soon to be extended family.

Hello anyone listening, reading.  I am in the middle of my family tree, and finding it incredibly addictive but also frustrating....things just don't make sense, dates out of kilter, names not as I knew them...maybe it's me or just an Irish thing!  Anyway, I'm Gail - Stuart is my cousin, Freddie's son and they remain in Dunfanaghy.  My Dad was Thomas Reid Wilson dob 2.9.1918, sadly died in 2007.  Anyway, Fredrick Sr was my Uncle, I only met him twice and on both occasions I was smitten, such a gentle soul.  I was so excited when I came across this site, and I hope people still look at it now and then.  If I have come across any answers to questions posed, I will respond, but at the moment, just trying to finish off, my mum and dads sides, which I will pass on to my brothers, when I'm finished, hopefully in time for Christmas. Any further information on Wilson's from Dunfanaghy would be most helpful.
Best Wishes

Gail

Welcome to Rootschat, Gail, but it's not allowed to post details of living people and personal details such as your date of birth (all for your own protection since information is so readily found online now-a-days and google can pick up  psots in minutes).

Just go back to your post, click on 'modify' button, remove the details you need to, then click on 'save.'

You haven't really explained what you are asking for help with so it would be a good idea (without mentioning living people, etc.) to explain what we can help you with.

For some reason I cannot respond to your replay.
I have my cousin's email address and you could contact him for details of the DNA testing.
I will link him (Jim Wilson) to this site and see if he can respond (he is in North Carolina).

Hi Vickie and others
I just put a search in for my great grandmothers family and up comes her parents names. She was Annie Wilson the daughter of Jane Clark and William Wilson. She married James Boyd of Carrickfin and they had my grandfather and a lot of others mainly sons. Most of them except 3 came here to New Zealand.  I once wrote to a Freddie Wilson in Hornhead and he sent me a neat poem he wrote
which I still have.
I always thought that Janes mother was Molly Connelly but maybe that was Williams.

Look forward to hearing from you
Marilyn

Hi Marilyn and Gail above.

Been so long since I've logged in here, I forgot I had registered already.  And I can't tell when you've left your posts it could have been years ago.

Anyway, Marilyn you said "I always thought that Janes mother was Molly Connelly but maybe that was Williams."  This caught my attention because I am ALWAYS looking for anyone with information on the Connelly's of Horn Head.

But Yes, Mary Connelly and James Clarke were the parents of Jane Clarke who married William Wilson in the Horn Head, Dunfanaghy.  William Wilson and Jane had a dghter Annie Elizabeth Wison who married James Boyd and they had a crop of children.

Am very curious of how you know of "Molly Connelly".  Also to Gail I am also a cousin to the Wilson's of Dunfanaghy, would love to talk more somehow.

Hi Marilyn,

re: Clarkes and Boyd's

This is actually "Lisa" (maireag) not Vickie, she was a previous post.

I think I may actually have you on my family tree, LOL, from Nola Waghorn's book.

But anyway I would love to connect with you, do you know how we can exchange emails since we are not allowed to post them here?  I'll snoop around this site and see if there is a way
