Title: Passenger list COMPLETED
Post by: uk2003 on Sunday 20 May 07 18:49 BST (UK)
Hi

Has anybody got access to ships passenger lists for emigrants to Aus from the UK?

Run into a brick wall on the Harris name but now I suspect these moved to Aus in 1925 or just after.

Joshua Gould & May Gould (nee Harris).

Regards
Ken

A quick look at the Ryerson death notice index shows them both mentioned in the death notices of NSW papers.  they appear by their address living at the same place.
May be your people.
More info can be got by contacting the search facility on the site.

Hi

Many thanks to you all for the help.

This information only came to light a couple of days ago, so it is not cast in cement yet.

The story so far:

In 1922 my Grandfather Frederick Harris married Selina Jones and this was witnessed by a Violet Jones and a Joshua Gould.

Fred had a sister called May and after a quick look at the BMD index I came across a marriage of a May Harris & Joshua Gould all living in the same area - so logic says 2 & 2 is four, but I know it dont always work out that way in ancestry research.

It was rumour in the family that a Harris went to Aus and May is the only one I could not find after the 1901 census.

Her parents were Samuel/Sampson & May Harris and his parents were Joshua & Elizabeth "this dose not match what Sue found"  :( - both May & Joshua were born abt 1900.

Now for the spanner in the works item. Info hot off the press  ;D

About 2 hours ago I was given a scan of a letter from a Ada Mcgrath? in Australia. Now it is like waiting ages for a bus to turn up, but in this case I now have two different families in Aus.

Selina Jones who married Frederick had a Sister called Ada born abt 1895. This letter was sent to Lina asking how the family is blahblahblah, but it gives no clues as to dates.

I have started to check the BMD's for a marriage to Tom Mcgrath - so far no luck - from the scan it looks like mcgrath  ::)

Thanks again for your time and effort  ;D

Regards
Ken

Well, who were Selina's and Ada's parents?

Any on the list of Ada deaths which Jenn has given?

What makes you think that TOM is a relevant name?

Is he mentioned in the letter?

I think if we are to have a way to work forward, we may need to know more such as any children mentioned in the letter.  Events that could help to pin point a time. etc.

It seems, by the letter, anyway, that NSW is the state to be looking in.

Also, could you let us know please where in Uk the Goulds and Ada originated.  The reason I ask is that there is a record for a Joshua Gould with NOK May in the Nat Archives.  It may be the one you have ruled out as dying in NSW, but it does say Place of birth for him Manchester and date of birth 1900 [or such]

Thanks again for the help

Selina's and Ada's parents were Griffith Henry Jones and Sarah Jones.

The letter mentions 2 others Griff and Violet, all brothers and sisters and children of GHJ & SJ

Nothing to pin point anything just general chit chat "how you doing" and so on.

All the families lived in Broughton Salford & Manchester at around the turn of the century and all very near each other.

Still cannot find marriage of Ada & Tom - could it be another name and not Mcgrath? if so what?

I can account for all names in the letter apart from Bill - I have no idea who he is.

Regards
Ken

KEN,
What makes you think ADA was married to someone namded TOM?
Please remember we cannot see the letter and do not know if ADA makes refernce to MY Husband Tom  Are you just assuming that as his name appears on the letter that he is HUSBAND of ADA.
We cannot see any evidence of the man or his relationship to ADA.

It clearly says to me on the bit of letter you have posted
"SISTER and BROTHER TOM & ADA"

Please note my previous reply to you regarding the Joshua and May Goulds.  He, born in Manchester.
You can get a copy of this record from the archives on request.
Sue

Here it is the full letter

One thing I picked up on - it says I hope all your family is keeping well.

Selina got married in 1922, so by the sounds of the letter it was post 1922 and maybe with children.

Ken

Hi Many thanks for all the information and leads, now I can add to my tree

Having just got the marriage cert - Joshua Wentworth Gould Married May Harris April 1925 - his father Joshua her father was Samuel (not Joshua)

It is more than likely the deaths that Sue found are my people.

Now the Question - How can I find out the burial location - this is first dabble into Aussy Archives so dont know which way to turn.

Hi

You can search the Passenger Index from 1926 on

http://www.ww2roll.gov.au/script/veteran.asp?ServiceID=A&VeteranID=148242

this link will show Joshua Gould's WW2 details a llittle more he wasn't in the army long. probably due to age or ill health

copy of his records from the NAA will give his war service details.

I have requested a lookup from the ryerson index will will hopefully give some details but it can sometimes take a few days.  I t looks like May may have died 4/5/1986 at Appin formerly from Hurstville(suburb of sydney) Joshua has the same details died 5/3/1971

http://www.whitepages.com.au/wp/busSearch.jhtml

A search of the White Pages on line does show a Gould living in Appin, might be worth while following up.

A copy of his death certificate will reveal where he was buried his children names also how long in the colomies we have a good deal of information on our death certificates from NSW cost $25.00 if you use the BDM site but only $15/00 if you use a transcription agent

a search of the NAA passenger indexs

has a Mr J gould, Mrs M Gould and A Miss M gould arriving into sydney 10/5/1927 on the Beltana

Jenn & Ozybob

I am stunned  :o and words fail me  :-X

Thank you so much  ;D  ;D  ;D

Ozybob would it be possible to find a full address for this F Gould in Appin "Sarah Pl Appin 2560" or is that the full address, Not being in this position before I think it might be more appropriate to write to him, is this right or wrong thing to do (dunno)?

Just Google Earthed Sarah Pl (looks very nice).

I am still speechless.

Jenn/Ozybob you are both a credit to Rootschat

Best Regards
Ken
