Title: Reygate/Reigate family
Post by: carol o on Tuesday 22 May 07 20:10 BST (UK)
Is anyone researching Edward Reygate and his family?
I believe one of his children (Ada)  married Peter Cambell in New Zealand.
 My connection is
Edward s' father Edward was my g.g.grandfather Robert Reygate brother.  ;D
Would love to hear from anyone
Regards Carol

Hi Bren.
Thanks for the marriage information of Ada and Peter. I see you are researching Campbell, any connection? :)

I have found the family arrived in New Zealand in 1877.
Edward died on board ship in 1876. That left wife Ann and children William 9, Ada 6, Anne 2, to cope on their own :(
Does anyone have any other information on rest of family?
Any help appreciated
Carol

Hi Carol

Apart from Ada, the only other REYGATE/REIGATE marriages are:

1878 Folio Ref: 0621
Ann REYGATE
Thomas HEWSON

1900 Folio Ref: 2397
Annie REIGATE
John William Briggs GILCHRIST

So looks like Mum and the 2 girls possibly married, but nothing for son William.

My Campbells are mostly Scotland and Lancashire and one wife who apparently took 2 boys to Canada c. 1885 (but have no leads on them)

My Thanks to Bren for the marriage information of Ann Reigate and her daughter Annie. ;D

I have found that William died 8/11/1881 and is buried in Timaru cemetery. :(

My Thanks to Del for finding Ada and Peter Campbell living in Timaru in 1893.
Please forgive my ignorance, but did New Zealand have censuses?

How do I find where Ann and daughter Annie lived?
Thanks for all the help
Carol

Hi there,

Numeric probate case files

Timaru High Court Probate Files
GILCHRIST John William B. - Timaru  >>   1932 1932 Timaru District Court

NZ Archives: http://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/CallSimpleSearch.do

Anne & John William B Gilchrist also buried together at Timaru, also a Ann & Thomas  Hewson buried together, There is a Peter and a ada Campbell also buried, but I didnt check to see if they are together. I would check and see who else if any other names are buried with or next to these couple, they are likely family.

So likely the whole family stayed in Timaru
Cheers
Del

Hi Del.
Thank you for finding the whole family in Timaru. ;D

I will wait and see if there are any family members still there and researching their history.
All this started as I was given a book on New Zealand.Inside was a inscription to cousin Charlie from Ada Campbell 1915. Need to find out who cousin Charlie is!!
Thanks again for your help

I see this post is now down as 'completed' i am hoping this message is seen by Carol.
I am also researching the Reygate's and read all about the New Zealand voyage in 1876-7 and Edward R who sadly died on board age 30, his wife Ann then settled in Timaru as you know.
If you wish to discuss please let me know, i have plenty of information from the Surrey side where they originated.

Hi Carol

I also come from the same line.
William 1761-1851 and Rebecca 1781-1854 had several children, one a son Edward 1817-1891 he married Maria Grant 1827-1873 - she brought a hereditary illness into the family called Huntingtons and passed it onto just about all her children, my mothers siblings died of it 5 generations later (she was the lucky one who didn't get the gene) even today there are cousins in my family in their 20's being diagnosed with this crippling illness which kills most in their 40's.
Maria died in 1873 in a lunatic asylum and is buried in Banstead, Surrey.
I have copies of death certificates and entries into Surrey lunatic asylums for most of their children.
i traced the Reygates back to 1700.
Have you seen all the information available on Edward Reygate and his failed voyage to NZ?
If you wish to discuss this via email drop me a private message i will give you my email address, i am intrigued to know where you fit in this big tree.
All the best, Lee.
