Hello,
Looking for parents of a John Gillies and Elizabeth Young married about 1865 in Roxburghshire
Thank you
-
Hi mtyler
Can't easily see a marriage for a couple with those names anywhere in Scotland. There are marriages between a John Gillies and an Elizabeth but not with a surname of Young. The closest I could see in Roxburgh was between a John and an Elizabeth TURNBULL on 26 MAY 1862 Cavers, Roxburgh, Scotland.

Today I found a birth record for son of this couple named Adam Young Gillies fom 1869 in Cavers and it states on form that John Gillies and Elizabeth Young were married in 1856 in Melbourne Australia
-
Ah, well that explains that ::)
I'll have a look on the censuses and see what we can find. What was John Gillies occupation on the 1869 birt cert?
Regards.

He was a stone cutter as he was in the 1880 census of Chicago IL

John Snr. not in the household on night of census but this looks like the family in 1871:
Elizabeth Gillies 40, Mason & Publicman (publican?) Wife, b. Nisbet, Roxburghshire
Helen Gillies 13, b. Australia
John Gillies 8, b. Australia
Margaret Gillies 6, b. Australia
William Gillies 4, b. Jedburgh, Roxburghshire
Adam Gillies 1, b. Cavers
Address: Mason Oran Inn, Cavers
-
Yes it does appear to be correct family. I wonder why they went form Scotland to Australia back to Scotland and then to US
-
One of life's mysteries :) They also looked to have probably met (?) and certainly married in Australia.

I found this entry on another genealogy forum:
young,s of nisbet
my family lived in nisbet for over 250 years from 1755 onwards.for all of this time they were blacksmiths.my branch left in 1852.looking for other surviving branches of this family.
That would explain how Elizabeth Young ended up in Australia probably. Have you got this info or would you like me to post details of the 1841/51 Censuses for her and family?
Regards.

No I do not have this information. If you could post it I would be deeply grateful. Thank you for all of your help

This looks like the Young family in 1841. Relationships within the household were not given in 1841 so not sure if these are all their children:

Anne Young 40
John Young 18
William Young 16
Thomas Young 14
James Young 12
Elizabeth Young 10
Isabella Young 8
Walter Young 6
Catherine Young 4
Asone Young 2
Adam Young 8 Mo
Isabella Young 35
James Lawrie 18, smith's app.

Where did you see about the Young family in Nisbet for over 250 years
-
On this site www.curiousfox.com/history_S/roxburghshire. Not one that I use, I think you need to register (not sure if free or paid for) to then be able to email the person who posted the message.

Link did not work for me
-
I took it staight from the google search results. Try www.curiousfox.com and then put in Roxburghshire for county.

I wonder if more than Elizabeth came back from Australia. Or indeed if it was the whole family that went over including parents?
mtyler, if you try doing some google searches you might find another couple of avenues to follow up the Young line. Googling for "adam young" +roxburgh +genealogy for example brings up this:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~tinlin/A.htm
Ann Tinline. Born 7 May 1801 in Crailing, Roxburghshire, daughter of William and Elizabeth (White) Tinline [reg.]. She married Adam Young [reg.]. He was born c. 1796-1801 in Roxburghshire [cen.]. He was a blacksmith in Nisbet, Crailing, Roxburghshire [reg., her death cert.]. They were living in Nisbet from 1823-40 [reg.]. In 1841 they were living in Crailing, and he was working as a blacksmith [cen.]. She died 27 Jul 1883 in Nisbet, Crailing, age 82 [cert.]. He survived her [her death cert.].
I'll check the 1861 census onwards to see if I can see Adam and Anne. You might find that it was only some of their older children (large family!) that went over to Australia (I'm having a problem finding Elizabeth b. 1830 in the 1851 Census at the moment although I can see Adam and Ann with some of the younger children in Nisbet).
-
I did recheck the 1900 Illinois census and Elizabeth Young Gillies states she was born in Scotland in March 1830 which matches the data from the IGI you sent. Thanks for all your help and I am checking out those links you sent
-
Adam Young and wife Ann are still in Crailing for the 1861 Census so doesn't look like they emigrated to Australia - probably just some of the older children (?). Some of the younger children are still in the household:
Adam Yourg 62, Blacksmith Emplaying 4 House (spelling?)
Ann Yourg 60
Cathrine Yourg 24
Adam Yourg 20
Margaret Yourg 18
William Yourg 6, grandson
Robert Fox 17
John Wilson 20
Address: Smithy. Crailing.
Lots of info on the previous posts. I'll stop now and let you go through them otherwise it gets so confusing!
Regards.
Monica
