This is the closest death record I can see for Lilian:
Lilian Mary Stevenson - b. 14 Jun 1899 - d. May 1987 - age: 87 - district: Nottingham
It could match the following birth, although of course SMITH is a very common name!
Births Sep 1899 (>99%)
SMITH Lilian Mary
Basford 7b 237
Still looking for a marriage record.....

-
Did Walter and Lilian have any children, or did she have any by her other husbands? If so, when were they born? This would help track down marriage records....
Rambler
-
nope they didnt have children togther but lilian did
a son called Eric BORN AROUND 1931 born to Lil and William SMITH
a son called Ken born to Lil and Les BAYLISS
-
on checking the 1899 one cant be Lilian.
Her mum was born in 1887 and died in 1966,so that would make her mum 2 when she had her !

I haven't found a marriage for Lilian and Walter STEVENSON, and I can't find a death for Lilian STEVENSON in Nottingham in 1986 - the only one that year appears to be in Cleveland... ???

Death:
Feb 1986
Lilian Stevenson Cleveland (dob 22 Aug 1917)
Unfortunately none of the Lilian Smiths born in the Sep 1917 quarter have mothers whose maiden name is Lowe.
I'm still not quite sure what it is you want to find out, as you appear to know something about previous generations already.
Richard
-
No thats the thing all i have is names for my grandparents....
I have a relative collecting my fathers birth certificate later this week so hopefully that will give me exact names of them etc..
-
Do you know the name of Walter Stevenson's parents (or any of his siblings)?
Richard
-
No sorry i dont.
-
How certain are you of some of the dates?
At the moment we have Walter Smith marrying Sarah Ellen Lowe in 1917, with their daughter, Lilian having a son, Eric, in about 1931. Either the 1931 is wrong, or Lilian was born before the 1917 marriage, possibly because Sarah Ellen had been married before.
What about 1986 as a death date for Lilian Stevenson? If that is definite it makes it more likely that Lilian was not born Lilian SMITH.
Do you know the approximate date for Walter and Lilian's marriage?
Richard
-
well i think once the birth certificate arrives for my dad it will help..
more skeletons it seems !
-
Did Lilian use her middle name?
Walter STEVENSON m. Clara L BAYLISS or SMITH, Sep Q 1954, Nottingham 3c 943
???

We may be getting somewhere!
Births Jun 1910 (>99%)

oh my.....uummm may have answed some questions that have been in my mind !
so she was actually Clara lilian...no wonder i couldnt find her :o
-
where is Shardlow ?
-
Well, it would be nice to confirm it by finding a marriage to BAYLISS, but it's starting to fall together.... 8)
Back to the BMDs!
Rambler
PS. Shardlow is in Derbyshire, but the registration district also covers bits of Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire.
-
I found a couple of interesting births - I suspect Walter SMITH and Sarah LOWE were together for some time before they actually married... ::)
Births Mar 1907 (>99%)
LOWE Walter Smith
Shardlow 7b 516
Births Sep 1908
LOWE Harold Smith
Shardlow 7b 546

I have just noticed it says Clara L S..Lowe...
wonder if its Clara Lilian Sarah ???
would they be on any census do you think ?
-
oh my how good are you !!!!
ok are you ready for this....
Lilian had older brothers and yes you have guessed it,,,
walter and harold !!!
now there was also leslie eric and lenoard !! plus another 2 sisters but younger...so i am wondering....
was my grandad walter smith father to the younger ones and the older ones by someone else....
now you said walter smith and harold smith then lowe....
so now i am wondering even more !!!!!
-
Judging from the entries that MR found it's more likely to be Clara Lily SMITH Lowe.
At least the confusion of dates mentioned earlier is sorting itself out.
Richard
-
... or Clara Lily Smith LOWE!
They'll be on the 1911 census - but we've got to wait a few years for that one!
(Well, the parents will be on the 1901, but it will be tricky to find the right ones with no dates of birth, occupation, etc to help.)
Once you get the birth certificate to confirm your grandparents' exact names, you can work backwards via their marriage cert (which will give their ages and fathers' names), and hopefully confirm some of the facts we've been searching for.
POST CROSSED WITH RICHARD!

well apart from a massive thanks..you have given me lots to look for.
so maybe in those days if parents wasnt married they did put the fathers name and mother ?
when will that census be viewable then !
-
Usually, only the mother's name is given on birth certs of illegitimate children. On marriage certs, there is either nothing, or sometimes an "invented" father for the sake of appearances - I have both in my family. ::)
I think there's a strong chance Walter SMITH was the father of all Sarah LOWE's children, although this will probably be impossible to prove! However, if the 1911 census shows them living together as husband and wife, that will be another piece of circumstantial evidence. (The full 1911 census will be released on the first working day of 2012, but apparently partial details will be released in 2009 - no exact date announced.....)
And at the risk of confusing things still further (sorry!), I found 2 marriages which you might want to keep in mind, even though I'm not completely certain I'm on the right trail here:
Leslie L BAYLISS m. Clara L MEAKIN, Jun Q 1941, Nottingham 7b 1131.
James MEAKIN m. Lily SMITH, Mar Q 1937, Nottingham 7b 512.
Could this be Clara Lily LOWE/STEVENSON?

-
