Title: St Thomas - Oxford - Floating Chapel COMPLETED
Post by: Julieharris on Sunday 27 May 07 21:43 BST (UK)
Does anyone have access to the Parish records of St Thomas Oxford that would be kind enough to do a look up for me please.

I am particularly interested in the 'Floating Chapel' of St Thomas  used by the boatmen  between 1823 - 1842.

The vicar struggling for attendance at his church had the idea of a houseboat "Boatman's Floating Chapel" for use as a chapel serving the families working on the river and the canals. Many boatmen did not want to present themselves in Church in their 'rough' costumes but felt at home on the barge.

I believe that some of my ancestors who were boatmen on the canal may have used this chapel.

Thank you
Julie

Hi Julie,

I can look up St Thomas records for you. Not come across any seperate records for this "floating Chapel" so may be they were just recorded in the Parish Register. If you let me have the names I'll see what I can find.

Regards

Maggie

Hi Maggie
I'm wondering if you can provide any info about the curate at St Thomas when the boat was first brought into service, a John Jones. i'm trying to find any bio info about him, especially birth, death and place of birth...
Thanks and best regards
Rachael

Hi Rachael
From Find my Past Newspapers. Bucks Herald 18 September 1841. Preferements & Appointments.
The Rev. John Jones, M.A., Precentor of Christ Church, and Vicar of St. Thomas, Oxford, has been presented by the Lord Chancellor to the Vicarage of Nevern, Pembrokeshire, void by the death of the Rev, D.T.H. Williams.

By following up on "Nevern" he was
Born 10.2.1792 Bala to Henry and Catherine Jones
Died 2.5.1852 and was buried at Nevern.

Plenty more abt him on internet but his work in St Thomas seems sadly lacking.

Best wishes
Maggie

Maggie you are an absolute marvel, I didn't even know when I posted yesterday if you would still be active here, so to hear from you with such a detailed reply is a delight! Thanks so much for looking into that for me, that gives me plenty to go on... I love the story of the Boatmans' Floating Chapel!
Thanks again
Best regards
Rachael
