Post by: LAH on Tuesday 29 May 07 14:13 BST (UK)
Hello Friends of the Archives - I search,

My question today is..
Does anyone have the order for the way children were named ?
Such as..
1st male after fathers dad/grandfather
1st female after mums / mum.. side
2nd male after ???
etc
etc

If so.. can you share it..

Thanks,  :D

Different cultures and countries have different customs. Any particular area you are interested in?
Ulster Scots traditional naming pattern was: 1st boy after paternal grandfather, 2nd boy after maternal grandfather, 3rd boy after father... 1st girls after maternal grandmother, 2nd girls after paternal grandmother, 3rd girls after mother... then naming branches out to great-grandparents, aunts & uncles...
Also quite common to name children for doctor, minister, teacher, etc. Some families stuck to the traditional ways and others weren't much bothered.

P.S. shpould also have mentioned that Ulster Scots also used, and still use, surnames as 'first' names.
