Title: Info: Good Books on life in the North of England
Post by: charlotteCH on Wednesday 06 June 07 07:23 BST (UK)
 Ticker amd others,
Can we collect a list of names of books about life in the north of England?
Recently I've read two: "The Classic Slum"and "The Road to Nab End".  They deal with late 19th c and from 1920ish. Gave me an insight into how my lot lived in Halifax and Blackburn.

I'll look up the details - author, publisher, IBSN and get back to the list if the idea seems a goer-

Can such a list be constructed in a way that allows rootschatters to add the names of relevant books?
What say folks, and Ticker in particular?

Might be an idea. I enjoyed Road to Nab End [by William Woodruff] and am looking for the sequel.
My ex husband's family came from Accrington and I thought it was probably very relevant.

If any one is interested in the Cheetham Hill area of Manchester Howard Spring wrote many novels about the area including 'Shabby Tiger' and 'Rachel Rosing'.

Maisie Mosco wrote books about families of Jewish Refugees in M/c at the turn of the C20th.

There must be many more :)

Hi All,

Ticker is a bit busy at the moment, so I'll answer for him.

Yes, that's a good idea.  :) :)

Just add them to this topic, in the same manner as the first entries
(Title, Author, and a short description).

I've edited the title of this topic, and if it grows, I'll add it to

Kooky, Some of my lot were in Accrington also in 19th C & I'm sure the Classic Slum book is relevant to social life there with the corner store as a key element.

Berlin Bob, thanks for endorsing the idea. Will.,scroung round for IBSNs abd publisher. author details.
to give folks a chance of getting hold of the books.

Does anyone know of any good books about Leeds/Holbeck in the first half of the 19th century by any chance? I'd be really interested!

I am just reading 'Our Kid' by Billy Hopkins.
I wonder if anyone has a map from the 20s of the relevant area?
