I'm still looking for information on Trengoffe in Warleggan. The house was burnt down years ago but I'm hoping someone may have sketches, photos or information about the old manor house .
Any info appreciated

Hi Narelle

I don't know if you are still looking for info ...but I found this interesting snippet..

WARLEGGAN or WARLEGGON, in the hundred and deanery of West, lies about six miles nearly east from Bodmin, which is the post-office town, and about eight north-west from Liskeard. The principal villages in this parish are, Bofindle and the church-town.
The manor of Warleggon, together with the advowson of the rectory, has long been in the family of Gregor, and is now the property of Francis Gregor, Esq., of Trewarthenick. Another manor of Warleggon belonged to the Coryton family, of whom it was purchased, in 1680, by John Trengove, otherwise Nance, Esq., by whose descendant, James Wyard Gooch, Esq. (some time of Trengoffe, now of Orford in Suffolk), it was alienated, in 1803, to Edward Angove, Esq., who at the same time purchased the barton of Trengoffe, (formerly esteemed a manor,) which had been successively in the families of Molins, Hungerford, and Hastings. This manor has been lately offered for sale. Trengoffe or Trengove gave name to an ancient family, by whom the barton was sold to the Tubbs: in Norden's time, it was the seat of John Tubb, Esq.: after continuing in this family for some descents, it was sold to the Parkers, and by the latter to John Trengove alias Nance, said to have been descended from a younger branch of the family, who sold this barton to the Tubbs. (fn. 11)
The manor of Carborro or Carburrow, and the barton of Trevedoe, have been for a considerable time in the family of their present proprietor, Arscott Bickford, Esq., of Dunsland in Devonshire. Part of the old mansion is inhabited as a farm-house; the remainder is reserved for the purpose of holding the manor courts

Hello "Step52"

Just browing the Cornish board today and noticed your (old) request.  I was in Warleggan last week and was talking to a gentleman whose family lived at Trengoffe.  He has lots of photographs of the manor, going back many years.

If you are still searching, let me know and I will get back to you.  He is rather elderly but very spry, "all there" and is a mine of information.  What is your connection with the property?

regards,
Anne

Thanks for your reply Cowboys mate.
I would be very interested in any  information and/or  contacts for  Trengoffe in Warleggan. I am a descendant of the Trengove  family of Cornwall and we were told the name was originally Tre an goff / Trengoffe. I don't know whether our Trengoves came from the old Cornish family from Trengoffe or not, but having visited that area I am very interested in the history of the house as well as the name. I live in Australia and would appreciate any help/contacts you are able to give.
cheers

OK,

I have to write to the gentleman to thank him for allowing us to visit him last week, so I will tell him of your interest and ask him if you can write to him (he has a computer but is not online).  I think one of his sons has a computer, I will find out if you can make contact that way also.

He is a real family history nut, he has volumes of books all done by hand and cross referenced, his family tree goes back to 850 or so (!).  But more to the point, he showed us some photographs of Trengoffe Manor before it was burned, including interior shots of the kitchens, and old relations who lived there.  He is very happy to share, and has given me copies of photographs of an ancestor of mine (he has a scanner and copier).

I'm sure that between us we can manage to get you in touch, and get some results.  There is also a couple of people in the next village who are very computer literate, who may be able to help if the son can't.
I will send you a "personal message" with my email address when I get a response from him.

regards,
Cowboysmate

Hi step52 and cowboysmate,

I know this message is from a long time ago, but wondering if you are still around.
I am related to James Wyard Gooch who inherited and Mary Gooch who married John Nance. Would love any photos of the Trengoffe manor or family history.

Regards,
Vanessa

Hello VanessaT

yes, still around!

I have three photographs of Trengoffe (two interior, one exterior), I think I may have sent copies to Step52, but it could have been in 2008 through a Personal Message, and my email records don't go back that far!

However, I still have the photographs, so can send them directly to you. Please send me a Personal Message with your email address, and I'll be happy to do it for you.

I could also make contact with someone down there who may be able to tell me if the old gentleman who gave them to me is still around, and if he could give us any further information, if you like.

kind regards.

Hello Cowboysmate,  I'm a Tubbs.  I'm a descendant of the Tubbs family that once owed "Manor of Trengoff".  I'd love to see your pictures.  Can you show on a map, it's original location?  Can you send me a personal message so I can give you my email?

Hello TubbsUSA

This manor house seems to be generating some more interest, which is great.
I am now in touch with the people in Cornwall I mentioned to VanessaT, and am awaiting further information from them before I can respond to you both.

My ancestors came from close by and I made the Trengoffe connection quite by chance, whilst visiting the area.

I hope their reply will be positive, so that I can send the photographs to you both.
I will let you know as soon as I get a response.

Regards.

Hello!

I would dearly love any photographs or information on the Manor that you may have.  I have an old exterior photograph of it before it was demolished and that is all.  An interior photograph would be amazing!

My ancestors story is an interesting one, and I haven't finished digging around yet so I hope to find out more about his life eventually.  His name was Subrata and he was from India.  He came out to England with George Gooch, who was apparently a Captain for the East India Trading Company according to family notes made in the 1920's but I haven't found any evidence yet of this.  (There was a George Gooch who was a Captain in the records but he lived longer than this George, so perhaps he operated privately with them..)

George was travelling to visit an Uncle when he died suddenly at Wakefield in 1788.  Not too long after this Subrata shows up being baptised at the Church by Mary Gooch's second husband Francis Cole in 1789.

Subrata took on the surname of 'Trengoffe' and very likely was sent to George's sister Mary after George's death, living at Trengoffe Manor.  Subrata ended up marrying a Cornish lady and having two children.  Only one of them survived infancy, my ancestor Mary Ann, who later changed her surname to 'Trengo' as did her mother who remarried in Cornwall in 1802.  Subrata disappears from the records after Mary Ann's baptism in 1795.  I have no idea if he died or if he left and went back to India.

Any photographs or information on Trengoffe would be wonderful, it featured so significantly in the life of Subrata, it would be very special to know more about the place that would have been his home for a while.

Thank you,
Tamara

Hello,

This message isn’t related to Trengoffe Manor, although that is a fascinating story. But I hope to contact some people with interest in the Gooch family.

I am researching the family of John Nance Gooch of Suffolk in the late eighteenth - mid nineteenth century. I think he had sisters who made a quilt that the Quilters Guild of Great Britain has acquired for its museum collection. I am a member of the Guild and an amateur genealogist, and I have volunteered to do some research to see what I can find out about the family.

If anyone is interested in corresponding about this, I would love to hear from you.

Hello, Harlem and also others who have an interest in Trengoffe Manor, Warleggan.

I have attached a couple of photos that I was given some time ago now, when I was researching my own family in the area, it is now ok for me to post them.

I hope that they will be of interest to those of you who have requested them from me and for whatever reason have not received the photos, or those would simply like to see them.
Apologies for not being able to post the photographs before now.

kind regards
